Road Cycling

There's a whole thread about running in the main sports section. I run as well.

Key things have been mentioned:
-You're already fit, which will help;
-Get a gait check done somewhere like Sweatshop so that you buy trainers with the correct angle support in them;
-Go hit the road;
-Take it VERY easy at first and keep the distances DOWN. As a cyclist you have the muscle strength, but none of your ligaments or support mechanisms round your knee (e.g. ITB, cruciate ligament etc) or ankle are very strong so can't take much running yet. Start gently and build up slowly!

I don't agree about forefoot running. It doesn't suit everyone. Sure it's more efficient and if you're naturally a forefoot runner then it's great, but if you aren't then you will be running in a way that is completely alien to you and you'll find it both difficult and probably injure yourself. I wouldn't be telling anyone they should be forefoot running.

Perhaps I did over simplfy the forefront running argument. Do what comes naturally to start with would probably be better advice.

I agree a gait check is very important. I started running in any old pair of trainers and kept getting substantial knee pain over 5k. After being assesed and buying appropriate trainers I've never had any problems.

Finally put the wheels together.

Continental GPS 4000S II tyres which I've had for 12 months waiting to be fitted.

Now do I fit them to my 5 year old Specialized Allez or wait for the new bike that I'm planning to buy in a few months......decisions! :D

Yeah could be. I still much prefer it to the train though. And I'm faster door to door. :D

I'm commuting 3 days a week usually so its still about 180km each week. But not been really putting any work in since I got sick a few weeks back. Feel slooooow.

And yeah the weather has been garbage. I've worn 3/4 leg warmers on every ride bar one this year. Half the time the temps barely in double figures and don't get me started on all the rain. Got drowned on Monday morning.

EDIT: ps (and apologies for shop talk in the thread, but...) are you guys open on monday? Wee man managed to destroy the brake cables on his mountain bike (don't ask!) so looking to get them replaced. Will pop down then if you're open.

Maybe it is hard :o:mad:

(took a shortcut after I got back on twice to get dropped again)

We are open, I'll be off but Stephen will be in. Maybe need to ask him nicely to get it done that day, if not leave it if possible.

Got mine too! You're right about them mostly although I didn't expect much for €/$ 25 or whatever it was! ;)

For the price they're the best <£30 glasses I've ever seen/owned. On par with the DHB 3-lens ones (similar price).

Great case, great lenses, great accessories just as grudas says - the frames are a bit meh 'flexy'/cheap feeling. They grip my head well enough to be secure, although I have quite a large head. I've seen wearing them for 20 mins while eating my lunch and they are comfortable :cool:

I know when out riding they'll have their fair share of knocks. If they fly off and get broken at $25 I'll not be too bothered, at £180 or whatever else I would be! ;):p

Unsure if Oakley do replacement only frames without some kinda serial number/genuine check but could be worth checking out!

'I was on holiday and they got stolen, I have the lenses and case do you do replacement frames?' ;)

I agree with this, i got mine yesterday and the lenses are very good no distortion which you get with some knock off glasses which i would argue is the most important bit. Frames are a little flexy but sit securely on the head can't really expect much more for £16. I ordered a pair of Jawbones from the same seller just cos hopefully they will be the same or better quality.

One ROSE XEON TEAM CGF-3100 Di2 - Ordered!!

Not sure on delivery/wait time yet - will confirm that asap. Can't see anything on the email. Just remember - if the wife asks - it was under £1000!!

I'm 6ft 3" with 90cm inside seem, the size calculator was flicking between 59 cm frame and 62cm - I think 62cm would be too big personally (if I put 89cm seem it was saying 59cm frame, if I put 90cm seem it said 62cm frame)

Went with 59cm for now - got a 1 month no quibble return if needed but can't see a 62cm frame being the right one.

Currently ride a CAAD8 XL which i think is a 60cm frame but had to go with a fairly short stem 90mm. Gone with 59cm frame and 110mm stem.

Been off the bike with hamstring issues over the last week. Having my first leg massage tonight, should be painful!

On the topic of running - I've knocked 1:25 off my TT time this year and think that's partly because of the running and swimming I've been doing. I've done a lot less cycling this year but feel fitter and stronger.

Not sure on geometry, but I'm 6'2" and I ride a 58cm Cervelo. Any frame that's 60cm or bigger will be a massive farm gate of a frame.

Anyone tried lusso bib shorts? Any good?

Heard good things about them, but no actual experience.

While we're on the subject of shorts... Until now I've settled for DHB Flashlight (L) (commuting & some leisure) and Northwave Logo SS14 (XXL) for my leisure/fancy ones... I've not spent more than £45 on a pair of shorts, yet! ;)

I've previously tried:
  • DHB Shard (XXL), found them too tight on the thighs and baggy around the tops/waist.
  • Some Castelli in a shop (unsure which, think the Volessimo) in a L and they again were too tight on the thighs & baggy on the tops.
Ideally now I want to find some good quality 'weekend' shorts, I don't want to spend over £100 on them but feel it is about time I get some proper shorts! ;)

Should I be looking at Italian style sizing with my big thighs and short legs (31")/body/height(5'7")? LBS does Santini and Endura 'team kit' I can get 'at cost' for their branded kit so I should probably try them, although I recall the jersey is £75 and the shorts over £100 so I'm slightly cautious to go a little out of my budget on a brand I don't 'know'. :eek:

Should I just get some Rapha Sky Replicas at £70?

Join the OcUK tri team.

It's getting busy. :p

While we're on the subject of shorts

I'm looking for more expensive shorts as well, but don't really know which brand are the best. I'm guessing it's between Castelli and Rapha. I think SoliD recommended Galibier to me, but keen to hear what everyone else recommends. Coming from MuddyFox £4 shorts, so I suppose anything would be an upgrade :P
