Thoroughly miserable half a day, but really nice now! Shame I'm going out soon. Got out for a few miles this afternoon, will be riding the cx for the next week and a bit, as I've no rear wheel at the moment for my road bike. Although dropped a wheel in to same shop last Monday and it was done by Wednesday. Today though, oh no availability until 8th June.

Bit of a pain, considering the shop I used to go to, would always try to get it done within 1 day, just a bit far away now I've moved, whereas this one is at the bottom of my road.

I find my arse hurts a lot more after a long turbo session compared to regular riding. Moving around helps a little but as you say, not enough. I try to practice riding in an aero position a bit whilst I'm on there to help.

Yeah, I tried to vary as much as I could but think it's inevitable without being able to stand/stay light like you can on the road when you haven't got a constant power output & cadence to focus on.

Looking forward to seeing what you end up eating to try and eat back all those kcal btw :p

:p IG: Benncc for whatever I don't post in the Eating thread

Also picked up a 10" desk fan for £20 which helped hugely with not only perspiration and subsequently fluid intake but also heart rate it seems. Topless with it on the lowest setting and I had to remind myself to drink as the cool breeze takes away thirst I found. Close enough that I could just point it away if I got chilly.

Awesome, will check out instagram :)

Personally I really can't stand super long turbo sessions. 1.5 hours is about my absolute limit and I prefer more like an hour. It's an impressive amount of mental endurance to make it all the way through that kind of session. I'd be tempted to do a shorter more intense session, though I guess it's not quite as good training really.

edit: Nice set up. I actually have my turbo in my bedroom :/ Involves a lot of moving stuff around whenever I want to do a session.

Tested out my trainer today, first time on one and didn't feel too bad (2 ~300 page books under the front wheel was my sweet spot!). Need to get a speed/cadence sensor though so no idea what I did but pushed as hard as I could for about an hour.

Was set up in the conservatory with the door open, no top on so wasn't too bad on overheating but my god the sweat in the eye's hurts.

Bike leg of the Nantwich Triathlon for our team relay today. Bit disappointed to go slower than last year but the wind was utter rubbish in places. This segment, which is only 3km, was heading west straight into the headwind - was a minute and a half slower than last year.

Does anyone here read any cycling magazines regularly?

I've got this weeks Cycling Weekly and its quite nice to read a physical magazine rather than a website.

Also got a couple of copies of Cycling Plus that I've read on the train etc.

Any recommendations?

Nice setup, I actually got myself one of those Linx8 tablets that run windows 8, works perfect on it and I just use a music stand, nice and easy to setup in the garage. I still need to get a fan, it is starting to get a bit hot in the garage. :p

So on trainerroad it says I have an FTP of 221W and FTP/kg of 3.5. I really have no idea where that is terrible or not, what do people on here have and can anyone shed any light? Was 6 weeks ago so may retest my FTP soon to see if it has increased again.

Finally what recovery drinks do people use? I have so far tried SiS chocolate and strawberry, both drinks are far too sweet. Any recommendations for something else?

Yeah, in fairness I'm not keen to do such a long session like that again soon as a)my arse is still killing me and b) it wasn't very exciting. Definitely agree 45-60 minutes is pretty ample for regular turbo use at this stage for me.

Get yourself a little fan, my googling returned the consensus I would need a jet engine 3" from my face blowing me out of the garage and down the road to be effective but the 10" desk fan you can see above was more than adequate for todays session in current temperatures. My Tuesday turbo session was gross, got through 2 litres and my bib shorts were soaked. Today I rode for over twice as long and didn't get through much more fluid and I didn't make a mess all over the garage floor and the bike. Still washed the bib shorts though but that's just good hygiene :p

Started riding in December, though I have some powerlifting/bodybuilding background, a respectable 'big 3' total of not far off 600KG and I've been used to high volume leg workouts, so built up some good strength and endurance in my legs. At 83KG/26yo my FTP is in the region of 320W (my TrainerRoad is a little understated if I'm honest, 305W) which gives 3.63w/kg, so not epic but nothing to be sniffed at for a novice!

I think there's a specific thread in this sub forum for weight/power ratios?

Recovery drinks? just eat :D

Get involved here man it will help you out big time to see how other people stack up - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18671905

The SiS recovery drinks I find are good but like you say, stupidly sweet as is all cycling/sport nutrition drinks and bars etc. I use MyProtein impact whey as a recovery drink, much more flavour choices. Yeah it does not contain the same carb content as the SiS specific ones but after a big bike ride I much prefer eating carbs :P

I alterante a subscription between that and Procycling. I don't enjoy the other mags - they're too filled with gushing reviews of massively expensive bikes for me. Randomly bought Cyclist this month though and am enjoying it - nice story about the Stelvio.

Rouleur comes with a complimentary hipster tash too

Good cycling weekend for me. Did the bike leg of the Outlaw Half triathlon in nottingham, which was great fun despite the conditions.

Our swimmer did a 32min swim which put me quite a way down in the overall. Got out on the 56mile bike course and started overtaking people until I was pretty much on my own for the remaining 30 miles or so. Ended up being 5th bike back into transition. Handed over to the runner who managed to close down 2nd place relay runner, and ended up taking 2nd place by over 3mins :) and 8th overall.

Conditions were horrific though, driving rain and strong winds. Really please to get a 2:21 bike split though, which I think was 3rd fastest. Averaged 277w.

Trainer Road and virtual power figures should be taken with a pinch of salt. There is a lot of variation in the setup of the tyre/turbo interface and an extra turn of the handle can make a big difference. My first FTP test had me at 300+ watts which is folly. I eventually re-calibrated and managed c245W which seemed a bit more reasonable.

Provided you don't mess with the setup then its fine for monitoring improvement and setting work out intensity just don't expect it to translate into CAT one Road racing performance! I do like Trainer Road. I cancelled my sub as the weather supposedly got better but I reckon I might go back on it even if its just for once a week.

Chapeau! That time is classed as elite-level for a 70.3 bike leg (obviously it'd be harder if you were doing the whole thing).

I'm aiming for sub 2h30m for my bike leg of the Staffordshire 70.3.

I keep eyeing up the InRide attachment for my turbo so I can get a better idea of an accurate FTP.

Thanks, yeah, not sure I could manage much of a run after that. Shame as I think I could have had a good crack at the course record of 2:16 had conditions been ideal like they were the last two years. Had to run training wheels, and my pointy hat strap broke at the last minute so used my evade instead as well.
