I try not to really eat much in training unless I need to, in which case its just a bar of something. Drink wise I usually have a bottle of water and a bottle with a caffeine electrolyte tab in which I use for the last part of the ride.

In races I just take two gels, and use them towards the last half as and when I feel I need.

Was interesting to read the comments in pro cycling from an ex pro saying about Sagan taking a gel with 10km to go on one of the classics, and realising at that point he was blown, as it was just too late and he needed to take with at least 25km to go so it didn't force the circulation into processing it, and not give the relevant kick at the right point in the race. So always worth considering when you're taking nutrition in shorter distances.

TCR is £1499 and the Propel is £1400. I can afford either.

I took the Propel out over the weekend. Aero wheels are scary in crosswinds :D I really didn't see that much difference between the two. I felt the Propel was a little quicker but hard to tell given different winds.

I asked the guy in the shop this morning and he said it's hard to choose between the two but the TCR would be more appropriate if doing a lot of climbing. I mostly just do Richmond Park so in theory the Propel would be best although I'd like to start heading out to Surrey Hills etc once I've got something... in which case I'm guessing the TCR would be better.

Too much choice! I think I'm going to hit Cycle Surgery (at Lee Valley Velopark) and Swift Cycles in central next weekend and try out the likes of the CAAD10, Focus Cayo 7.0 and Cube Agree GTC Race.

How do I tell if my SRAM BB is BB30 or GXP?

I believe it is GXP based purely on the spec of the 2015 version of my bike on Canyon's site. Other than the paint job the spec looks the same as 2014.

Isn't GXP a screw in BB, like HTII, while BB30 is press fit? So if it's GXP it'll have notches on the cups and you can use an HTII tool, whereas if it's BB30 it'll just have tiny writing saying "LOL, you're boned, go buy a fancy BB removal tool".

I ordered some BBB Select glasses to replace my old scratched Stringrays.

They arrived today a from initial inspection I'm very impressed with the quality. I look forward to wearing them!

My neighbour dumps loads with me from time to time as he reads tons of them!

Cycling Weekly is much more focused on pro cycling.
Cycling Plus is a good one, put out by Future Publishing and linked heavily to bikeradar.com. Loads of adverts for Ribble and Dolan!
Cyclist is a fairly new one, I've read a couple of issues of that and it seems pretty good.
There's also quite a fancy one called... something... I forget what. Cycling? Maybe? That's a bit more high end, heavy paper and so on, quite detailed features about cycling on the continent and the like.

Sounds to me like your decription of Cycling is actually Cyclist

You guys are knowledgeable about gears...

Can I stick a 10 speed cassette on a 9speed drive train as a temporary measure until I can get some replacement 105 shifters?

Yep, I'm pretty sure you could get it working as a temp fix. You will likely miss out on a gear in the middle somewhere and shifting may bit a little iffy towards the middle of the range.

The RideWithGPS almost worked perfectly, had synced hrm and cadence sensors earlier on but when I went on the ride it didn't record anything. Used about 15% battery for 1:45 ride.

I found I used to use around 5-8% battery on my commutes (around 25min using IPBike) when using GPS for positioning.

I think I tried to use the RidewithGPS app and found the same thing so just gave up with it - I was using other things for actually recording my rides, just RidewithGPS to create.

Does anyone here read any cycling magazines regularly?

I tend to keep up with websites, mostly roadcyclinguk.com and cyclingweekly.co.uk for a few other bits.

Although I have a ProCycling magazine sub (from the Leyzne Macro deal) that's still going even after me cancelling it (and stopping the DD). I'll be taking a few issues with me on holiday!

My not-so-glamorous & precariously balanced garage set up (knew that B&D workstand would come in handy) :p :

Haha great setup, love the banana placement! Kudos for doing a long turbo ride, it shows you must have some great mental skills to do that long! Longest I think I managed was ~90min. An hour I could manage with Game of Thrones or something to watch on my tablet. Lower times/higher intensity were much easier to stick as they kept me engaged more, usually with a Sufferfest/YouTube spin/hillclimb.

My lolworthy turbo setup (I turbo outside as no space in house/garage):

Finally what recovery drinks do people use? I have so far tried SiS chocolate and strawberry, both drinks are far too sweet. Any recommendations for something else?

I've still not ideally perfected my 'recoveries'. I usually mix up what I have immediately when returning, usually the end of my tab drink (from the bike) with a handful of dried fruit/nuts. Usually a cake too! I did start to have icecreams but found they gave me quite a sickly feeling as I usually have a hot steamy shower after too!

I keep eyeing up the InRide attachment for my turbo so I can get a better idea of an accurate FTP.

Stages/Powertap better as you can use on road and trainer! ;)

I had a few problems getting out for a ride over the weekend. Saturday I was busy until 4-5pm and then was 80% ready and the heavens opened... Winds picked up too so I sacked it off, sure enough by 7pm the sun was out again! Typical British weather!

Sunday morning I headed out, weather was changeable (few spots of rain) so fitted my mudguards (which I'd taken off a week or so ago!). A mile down the road I hear a sudden clattering and my rear guard had popped out of the brake bridge 'clip' and was riding on the wheel. Easily sorted (I thought). Half a mile later *bang* it had come off again and this time it had jammed between my brake bridge and wheel (wheel almost locked). The lower part of the guard (fits between seat tube and wheel) flew off and promptly got run over by a car following!
Refitted it and thought I'd bodged it enough to carry on, but sure enough half a mile later it came undone again so I had to limp home. Went out to meet some friends for lunch and didn't get back home until 3.30pm but as the weather was good still I 'fixed' the guard (drill & cable tie!) so went out for a ride to test it. Guard behaved itself but the winds were brutal, quite impressed with my speeds & averages as it felt slow due to the headwinds. I came across what I can only assume is an ostrich in a field. I had spotted it a number of weeks ago but had driven myself crazy thinking I'd imagined it - took some photos to prove to myself it's real (see Strava pictures)! ;)

I was in a much better mood once I'd done some miles, even with the cold strong wind! Traffic was calm so I kept going until tired/hungry and then took a fast A road back to town I'd normally avoid - probably really helped with my average speeds! Also found a different shortcut from that side of the city to the river I didn't know about - productive rides are some of the best! :D

Planning to go out with my friend(s) again later if the weather holds... Forecast is an amber wind warning with driving rain. :(

Head to Rhodes on Tuesday night/Weds. Will be taking my Garmin with me to Strava some rides, will take my HRM but doubt I'll have speed/cadence apart from what the 810 gets from GPS.

Yeah thats what I figured, not sure I'll want to go climbing "oop norf" with it though. Will see!

Had a pretty good weekend. Wish I had got out a bit more on the bike though, only managed 40 odd miles. Road bike is in need of a good service, as it's making a bit of rattle, probably bearings need re-greasing.

Hoping to get my carbon frame ordered this week for the custom build. I'm struggling to decide on the right size though, it's either a 53 or 55cm. My cyclocross bike is a 56cm frame and slightly too big, so I think 55 would probably be best. I just don't want to make a costly mistake :)

What frames are you looking at? It might be worth looking at the other measurements of the frame such as stack and reach and compare it to your current bike in order to figure out the best fit.

Yep, as FT says 602 from here:

http://flyxii.com/en/products/flx-fr-602-matt.html

I'm following FT's guidance, with perhaps some minor adjustments.

To be honest, my current road bike isn't an ideal fit (48cm frame). Which is the main reason for building a new one. From the quick comparisons I made at the weekend, I think it's the 55cm. But as I said earlier, expensive mistake if I get it wrong :)

/snip.

Haha, the banana came in handy for the last interval, didn't feel I needed it but no excuse to flag on the last interval having consumed it  would also aid recovery too to have it already floating through my guts:p (Cadbury mishapes for the most part :D)

Yeah, tbh I just wanted to suffer, quite good at punishing myself, something that's carried over from high volume leg workouts and just putting your head down, zoning out and getting it done. Also having the upload to TR etc is also a nice motivator as I see lots of workouts people just give up and stop half way through etc. Sounds strange but not looking like a wimp to internet strangers spurs me on

Someone on road.cc has traced who the driver is. He runs somewhere called brew cafe or something.

The daily wail comments will be overrun soon, no doubt.

As for what has gone on... There's a dire shared use path on priory lane to Richmond park and the driver got upset that the cyclist wasn't using it.
