Three of us out again today. Yet another summers day with a 15mph wind! We headed down to the Chilterns and ended up doing a bit of the Womens Tour route ahead of when the race went through. Climbed Tom's Hill just as the crowds were gathering. I shouted to the spectators that I was in the breakaway which raised a laugh! Forgot to start the garmin so 73 miles in total across some lumpy terrain.

Where do you live Calpol? I suspect we aren't a thousand miles apart...

Awful ride this evening. I was far more tired than I thought, it was far windier than I expected, it rained which I hadn't expected and I didn't even get a PR on the evil ******* climb in the middle which I'd at least hoped for... I also nearly got left hooked and had some scrote shine a laser pointer in my face.

Rubbish.

Eh? WTF happened?

Got some comp tickets to the Croydon stage of the Pearl Izumi tour series the other week and was chatting to some of the lads in one of the smaller teams starting near the back. They were on their own bikes by the look of it, nothing special, inexpensive wheels and they were rolling on GP4000 clinchers. They weren't the only ones on those tyres. Bear in mind this was in a race with Ed Clancy, Kristian House, Ian Bibby etc.

They didn't win but it wasn't the bikes or the kit, that's for sure.

GP4000 clinchers are superb tyres. Or am I misunderstanding the point?

Heading up the road I saw something green flashing in the distance. I looked up and could see a line flickering off the raindrops and flashing around my glasses and off my jersey. I put my head down, and figured the peak of my cycling cap should keep my eyes out of harm's way, and just stared at the 6 feet of road in front of me until I passed the two lads who I assume were responsible. Scum.

They shouldn't be doing stuff like that but calling them scum is slightly harsh, mischievous kids maybe:p

Wheels are with customs! Hope I get my note to pick up! Need some inner tubes for 50mm clinchers though! Any recommendations for good long valvers?

I brought a load of 700c tubes with 80mm valves by mistake, they were on sale at Planet X awhile back. Any good to you?

Picked up a TT bike from kiteloopy on the weekend - thanks again. :D Spent the evening tweaking and polishing with GT85 in preparation for its debut tonight. Hopefully a PB on the cards or something has gone really wrong...

It's a Canyon Speedmax AL and really happy with it. Will have to post some pics. It's white though so strictly for nice weather!

Damn, that sucks. I'm still dreading doing the rake again. Considering how much quicker you lot were than me going up Foxholes I don't reckon I'm going to be setting any PRs any time soon. I did feel strong when out with Wally Sun though. Although I think that was all the cookies and ice cream I shovelled in on Sat getting burned off...

If you fancy a midweek run somewhere give me a shout.

Just north of Luton. We periodically head to the Chilterns for some hill pain. Lovely riding round there but not without hazard. Very near miss with a horse yesterday. I was glad the guy behind me had Dura Ace calipers otherwise my rear wheel was totalled!

Good to hear. :D

Let me know if you have any issues with it.

Get the pics up!

Thats both hideously garish and beautiful at the same time

It's very marmite isn't it! I love how fast it looks, but the overall 'feel' of it is very mutant. It's not a pretty bike, but you can tell it's one hell of a weapon!

Woke up this morning to a message saying that one of my KOMs had been taken. Was quite curious to see who had managed it as it's one I jointly hold with one of my neighbours here and neither of us seem to be able to better our previous times. Turns out it was by someone who'd left their GPS on in their car and had also recorded themselves doing 46mph through a village with a 30mph limit (and several pedestrian crossings) as well as 68mph towards a junction in a 50mph limit. Speeding and then uploading the full GPS log to a website - doesn't sound like the smartest of ideas, but I guess the chance of anything happening is still 0%.

Utterly gutted there's nothing you can really do, I wonder how that would shape up as evidence in court if he'd crashed and killed someone.

I've caught up with my neighbour who had the off last weekend. He's recovering, but his hands have a lot of cuts and very heavy bruising, and his back is quite sore.

Glad to hear he's recovering & nothing serious.

Ouch! One of the guys at my Club had an off on a downhill section at 45 MPH. Obviously he was a mess, but since he recovered and returned to the bike his confidence has (understandably) taken a huge knock. Hopefully he'll get it back over time.

Confidence is one of those things, I've seen guys take a nasty fall and just get straight back on the bike. I also know someone that a car driver cut up as he was trying to get back into cycling and he refuses to get back on the roads...

I guess a lot of it is down to the person, many of the semi-pro guys I know are so confident in their bike handling abilities that if anything happens it doesn't really affect their confidence. The rest of us I guess we always have a suspicion or slight nagging in the back of our mind that we made a mistake so our confidence takes a hit.

I know when I was knocked off, my self confidence was fine - I got back on the bike within a couple of days. If I'd have left it longer I probably would've been more cautious. My confidence in car drivers took quite a beating though - I'm still paranoid about them. I think that's the best way to be though, certainly with work commuting traffic - don't trust them with my safety!

Get that every so often too. Average of 40mph and things like that.

I did have mine on for a drive to Oban and max speed was listed at 99.9mph.......:o

Fast guy from near me drafted a lorry up a local link road, I'd spotted the ride before his comments as it did look a bit dodgy. Some popular KOM's there I don't think he'll loose anytime soon! (Including my 24mph attempt I managed with a beast of a tail wind! :()

Had a '2/3/4' road race here this weekend, is that CAT 2+3+4 all in the same race? Fast guy again did well (KOM one of the loops), but only managed to finish in the bunch. Many of my local club headed out to marshall, I should've gone to watch but didn't have time :(

Strava Adventure challenge is on again, quite like the jersey for this one:

Yeah, all those categories in one race.

Busy week training and racing for me, some writeups on my blog:

We live in Hazlemere, between Beaconsfield and High Wycombe. Let me know when you are next out this way and I'll tag along ;)

Only that the rest of the conversation was about the fallacy of needing the best kit to be the fastest. I was showing that even pro racers don't always have fancy kit. GP4000s are good tyres, but there are far better tubulars for racing, though these guys showed that you don't need them.

anyone remember these?

If I can find one for sale, it's going on my bike for sure :p

Yes! How about some of these to go with them? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bicycle-Spokey-Dokey-Spoke-Beads/dp/B004CXZSDA

Think he was hinting about them using clinchers and not tubs?

They shouldn't be doing stuff like that but calling them scum is slightly harsh, mischievous kids maybe:p

I assume him calling them 'lads' mean they weren't kids, so should know better!

Same here, Lifeline ones? I've been 'using them up' only to not puncture for months... Typical! Nobodies said anything on my club rides, yet! :D:p
