Guys, what do you make of the GD thread about the woman eating cereal? I am not even going to try and defend the cyclist because he is of the militant type that give the rest of us a bad name. Some incredible cyclist hate being displayed in GD though, not sure what's wrong with people.

I've had myself voluntarily banned from gd to avoid getting myself in trouble arguing with knuckle draggers. It's been years, and I don't miss it.

I've caught up with my neighbour who had the off last weekend. He's recovering, but his hands have a lot of cuts and very heavy bruising, and his back is quite sore. His bike frame is fine, bar a minor scuff to the drive side chainstay. His rear mech is scratched but still working fine. He's had to replace his shifters, though. His left hand shifter took the brunt of the impact so it's barely in one piece. It would take a while to source a single ultegra shifter so he's upgraded to a pair of dura ace shifters!

Ouch! One of the guys at my Club had an off on a downhill section at 45 MPH. Obviously he was a mess, but since he recovered and returned to the bike his confidence has (understandably) taken a huge knock. Hopefully he'll get it back over time.

Woke up this morning to a message saying that one of my KOMs had been taken. Was quite curious to see who had managed it as it's one I jointly hold with one of my neighbours here and neither of us seem to be able to better our previous times. Turns out it was by someone who'd left their GPS on in their car and had also recorded themselves doing 46mph through a village with a 30mph limit (and several pedestrian crossings) as well as 68mph towards a junction in a 50mph limit. Speeding and then uploading the full GPS log to a website - doesn't sound like the smartest of ideas, but I guess the chance of anything happening is still 0%.

Get that every so often too. Average of 40mph and things like that.

I did have mine on for a drive to Oban and max speed was listed at 99.9mph.......:o

As always :)

I believe it was during a six car overtake so it was justified to me.

Hope it's dry tomorrow so I can get out a long ride and/or tweak my cleats whilst I'm out. I keep messing around position wise and I'm never happy. Even feel a difference when I have Santini shorts on vs Madison ones.

Just the old 5700 105 pedals.

I think the problem comes from having broken my left foot in four places years ago.

I fitted new cleats in the hurry the other night so might just need slightly adjusted.

You only need high end kit if you're on a 3 week tour and the top 3 are separated by a handful of seconds.

I know that, but I feel like there's an increasing perception that you need thousands of pounds worth of stuff even for leisure riding.

The elites had some lovely kit, but even most of them were still on ultegra, although with fancy aero wheels

To be fair, Ultegra is the most you really need (or comparable level from other manufacturers). That mid-level kit is superb.

Using the auto-upload from TrainerRoad to Strava lately, not sure if it's just my machine but todays ride never seems to fully load for me?

Can view other peoples without any problems and it shows fine on the iPhone app. 'Show More' is unresponsive, add description doesn't work and just got the dial forever spinning at the bottom. Same in a different browser too.

Edit: fricking typical, make this post and now it works...

Marshalled at the Bristol Grand Prix today, was good fun.

What surprised me most was the number of riders running surprisingly basic kit

Road.cc had an article about having a stab at racing on a £450 bike from Decathlon, albeit with a wheel upgrade. Linky.

As one of the comments says, unless you are way over to the right on the bell curve, the bike is far less important than the rider.

to be fair though, the wheelset cost almost as much as the bike! Not that I think you couldn't race on the cheapest triban :)

Hell, if people can do Ventoux on a Raleigh Chopper, us amateurs can't complain about cheap parts :p

Most of the sponsored guys/girls here are on Ultegra or Force.

Cheaper for the teams to buy and replace if crashed as well, the extra performance isn't really needed and the $ better spent on wheels or power meters.

The difference in weight between cassettes is pretty massive, so I'd try and run a red/Dura ace cassette if I could!
