Woot, fun ride for me this evening. I've not really been feeling it lately, so I had to push myself a bit to go out, but I'm glad I did. It was very windy, which wasn't great, but I averaged a decent 17.1mph for 26 miles which I'm happy with, including a decent stretch in the middle at over 20.

It's a route I'd done a couple of weeks ago on my single speed bike. When I did that I averaged 16.8mph, so not much faster on a real bike, even with it being lighter and with gears. I'll have to try it again on a less windy day, as I'd expect to be faster on a geared bike, unless that's just the magic of single speed...

I'd only filled my tyres to 90 PSI as well, and they're bigass Pro 4s in 25mm, so the ride was pretty comfy, as I've noticed it getting a bit rough at times recently. It was almost too soft - I could feel the back end bouncing a bit when I was pushing hard.

Tough slog out to a local slope tonight. Wasn't really feeling it and the head winds out to half way were just ridiculously strong and by the time I got to the climb I was toast! Good spin out though and will do me good.

Ouch, 12:27 up Shaley! Did you have to get off and walk? It is a sod, that one.

Aha, yeah, I've just looked at the compare thing on Strava and there's a big gap at the end where you were doing nowt! Still 37s off my PR at the point you stopped, though ;)

Right I can't figure this out.

Got an FSA EVO-8681 bottom bracket:
http://www.fullspeedahead.com/products/bottom-brackets/megaevo-bottom-bracket/

It's currently fitted with the following FSA Chainset:

I don't like the size of the cranks on it, and I fancy just getting rid and fitting a Shimano 105 Chainset. It sounds like it's not as simple as I'd like, can anyone help me with options? I've never replaced BBs before so I'm a bit lost :(

It is simple. 386 is just a combination of a 30mm spindle from bb30 but with a wider shell more like traditional external cups, 68mm shell+width of cups, versus 68mm for bb30.

Remove old chainset. Fit new shimano threaded bb. Bbr60 or similar. Shooty in.

Have you tried pumping them up to the 15% drop levels? My 25mm's are 104 rear and 83 front for my 191lb lump sat on top.

Cool, cheers! :)

I got seriously confused after some googling which told me I was basically screwed!

I did the exact same switch, and it really confused me too at first. I've gone from that same combo to a regular ultegra BB with normal shimano cranks.

Only issue you'll have is finding somewhere with the correct tool to remove the BB! In the end a LBS removed it for me for a fiver so I didn't have to buy the tool.

I'm using 25mm pro4's too and run my front at ~90PSI and rear at ~95PSI. During the greasy miserage icy/wet weather I ran them both at 85-90 PSI. Usually fine for commuting (comfort & carrying ~81kg rider & 5kg pack/gear) for a week or so. If I'm doing a particular faster weekend ride (without a pack and comfort less of an issue) I'll usually pump rear to 100PSI (as I like to give my bike a bit of a 'sort out' on a friday night once the commuting is done). Nothing worse than a squishy rear when you're hitting a climb hard on the weekend! :D

Indeed the tools themselves cost much more than the BB's. I was looking at what was required to replace my BB90, ~£40 removal tool and ~£60 installation tool before even looking at what to replace it with. Although this installation tool is much cheaper? And out of stock...

I came to the conclusion that it's only worth buying the tools if all the BB's I had were the same size and I had 3-4 to do. Until that's the case (or the BB90 specific tools drop to similar price as the others ) then it's cheaper and easier to get my LBS to do it! :)

A friend of mine took his mrs out for her first ride in about 20 years the other day...

(10:25:44 AM) Stuart *****: She said she found the speed quite exhilarating at one point.
(10:26:10 AM) Stuart *****: Top speed, 9.4 kmh

edit: Fixed all the damn autocorrect typos in his message.

a wild grudas appears... *keep pushing he screams* and randomly disappears...

So I've been cycle commuting for about 9 months now, I hadn't been on a bicycle for probably 10 years before that, My bike has developed a kind of rattle in the chain, I'm not sure if that means the chain has stretched and is too loose? also a shake is coming from the back of the bike making it wobble. I'm thinking of taking my Bike in for a service somewhere to get a check up and hopefully address these issues but does anyone know what it could be?

Thanks

Yeah but people already think it is anyway so it won't change anything.

neh it'll be dumped all over news etc that now there is "road tax" so there will be an increase in it...
