Grudas do you use a GoPro to record your commutes? accidentally mentioned to my mum the other day about some **** throwing a bottle at me when i was riding home, she now wants me to record my rides. Not sure how long the batteries last on these things? i got a Hero 3 but tbh ive hardly ever used it. Is it possible to get a couple hours out of them?

Standard VIRB like me, I record all my riding. The battery doesn't last a week of my commuting (10*~20min rides, so around 3 hours is accurate). I find a 32gb memory card with the VIRB set to 'Economy mode' gives me around 6 hours of storage.

Heard of these but never looked into them until now.

They look pretty good! I like how you can remove the battery and pop a new one in if youre on a longer ride.

New battery = £25
External charger = £18

VIRB does take around 4 or more hours to fully charge (which is annoyingly long) so I'm considering getting an extra battery for mine. If only Wiggle stocked the batteries as well as the chargers  (only place that stocks the batteries is Evans')

I rate it as a great cycling orientated alternative to the GoPro. It's cheaper (can regularly find it on deals, I only paid £90 for mine back in december!), battery lasts longer, integrates with Garmin devices (if needed, I've not bothered) and the editing software is fantastic. Recording quality is excellent (even on eco mode) and I consider it better than GoPro (my own opinion).

The only downsides which get me are - it's slow to charge. Accessories (mounts, batteries etc) are expensive. It has no internal memory (so you're reliant on your mem card capacity). The microphone is rubbish, it picks up every rattle, whistle of the wind and all road noise (making it useless to record audio when cycling). The new version of the VIRB is a different size/shape meaning there will be nothing 'new' for the model I have, I expect even the battery is different. The display screen is 'always on' which to me ruins the battery life, why display when recording?! :)

Overall I'm very happy with mine, I've used it in all weathers cycling, even sub zero temps with no issues. I've used it snowboarding and it's taken some knocks/drops with no ill effects.

Edit: Guy from my work is on a cycling holiday across Italy... Across the Dolomites to Lake Garda then on to Venice. So jealous! :o :(

Fantastic, ill probably end up getting of these, my friend offered me a Gopro a couple of weeks back but i dont want to spend any more money at the moment. Ill probably wait untli my birthday now and get it given as a gift :D

Whens the next one out? Can imagine theyll add a few new things, like the ability to turn the screen off, i wouldnt want the screen on anyway.

You can use Gopro mounts with the included adaptor so mounts can be had dirt cheap.

Also the 'river' sells the battries.

The Microphone is pap but it can be improved by removing the part of cradle that is held on by a screw that is covering the mic.

Can be had for £97 on the river, and then get a £3 gopro mount from china and jobs a goodun. Just don't get the Garmin cycle mount as it is crap.

that new Garmin camera sounds great ! and cheaper than the go pro !
I want one

meh you won't really need more than 1080p for daily recording, I need around 60gb of space for a weeks worth of recording at 1080p, you can imagine how much that would be at 4k ;) so IMO virb is a batter buy, plus better battery than the new garmin.

you can indeed, that's what I'm doing with mine.

I ripped the rubber bit out of the mic cover and it is much better! left the screw on plastic bit tho, but it opened up the whole thing.

Of course you can use Gopro mounts, that's one of the plus selling points of the VIRB mate! :D

Although my VIRB vented helmet mount was cheaper (and better quality) than the Gopro alternative, it's awesome for snowboarding! I originally got the VIRB handlebar mount and it's superb, really sturdy and solidly built. I would probably use it for MTB/Downhill over the outfront (more sturdy/solid). I only changed it as it's a little large (VIRB isn't exactly small sat 2" over the top of your bars) and I wanted an outfront garmin/camera.
I'm using the Superstar Garmin/Gopro mount - Superstar come highly recommended for any mounts. They're cheaper than most with superb quality and free, fast delivery (UK).

I've heard the alternative batteries do not last like the official garmin, although I did find one with a larger mAh rating than the standard... But it was around the same price as the official Garmin one!

Microphone is rubbish, standard mount has a rubber cover over it making everything 'muffled'. I removed that and the plastic 'cover', can hear too much now! I would refit the plastic part but I've lost it...

You can get an external mic (I even found a forum post where someone made their own), but fitting it you have to have the rubber cover open so the unit is no longer water resistant.

so tomorrow is going to be fun with the tube strikes! roads will be JAMMED with cagers, bus kankers and so on! :o thinking of doing a different route, down a closed-ish road so would be traffic free for 4-5miles

Just before setting out last night noticed my rear brake seemed to be binding occasionally. Closer inspection reveals the wheel isn't particularly true.

Time to droll over some new wheels for a bit, then just get it re-tensioned by the LBS  :D

Hadn't planned on it - would be tempted if it were not for the weather forecast ;)

That Superstar Garmin/Gopro mount looks like just what i need.

The best mount ive got is the chest mount, thats awesome for getting a actual feel of riding but i just need one for saftey on the commute and to keep my mum quite so that Garmin Go Pro one looks great

took my roadbike out for a little ride since upgrading it last night. Was delaying it for some reason.

3T carbon handlebars & dura-ace groupset.

loving it. needs some carbon paste though.
