Who here uses Campagnolo kit?

I'm reading up on them for when I get round to buying/building a carbon bike, which is probably two years off, but bear with me... It sounds like their bottom bracket standards are a bit crap... Like they all have creaking problems... Not really what you'd want when you're paying such huge amounts for their parts.

It's pushing future me towards trying out SRAM on future me's bike.

In other news, slightly closer future me is thinking that he'll buy a power meter of some kind next year and buy a 5800 groupset to replace the Tiagra on recent past me's Planet X bike.

If you're buying a shiny new carbon bike with a nice groupset then presumably you don't really need to do much with your current PX bike aside from keep it ticking over?

I've not got that many miles on ultratorque, only a few hundred, but not had any creaking problems. Havent tried Powertorque.

:D Bloody Roo's!
I think a Joey jumping out on you is 10000 times more hilarious than any of the sucky British animals though. You win! :D

Over in Oz they're either huge or poisonous so they definitely win!

Over here the closest I've had was a squirrel run between my wheels, still not sure how it managed it @ 17/18mph after it had dodged a car!

Only thing I'd add to what Roady said is that if you're using Trainer Road and virtual power then the HR strap isn't really needed. I hardly ever use it for training.

The HR strap was useful for me to figure out my training zones and how the TR power data related to my riding. I know by HR now what I can sustain on long fast rides or on climbs. Without it I would have to judge purely on 'feel'. For me feel is rubbish as I overheat easily with my high HR yet I can maintain/sustain a 'high' HR providing I don't spike (spike = blowup!). Some days I feel crap but providing I hit the HR's I'm expecting I find I have the stamina, without the HR I'd probably give up and go home! ;)

Great price, even on Wiggle really.

Saw this ride and thought of you: https://www.strava.com/activities/350132204

Ah, that makes sense. I used virtual power for my TR training zones and then when out and about even when I use my HRM I don't have the HR displayed on my Garmin. I probably should do but...y'know :p

So I guess I'm saying that if you're *only* using HR when you're using TR then it's almost pointless whereas if you use it to establish baselines for outdoor riding then it's probably somewhat more useful.

I've only every used Campag kit. I have Chorus on the bad weather bike and Record on the best bike. I'm a bit of a Campag fan boy really. :)

I love the feel of the shifters and have never had a problem with BB creaking. It is an old style cartridge BB on the Chorus and Ultra-Torque on the Record.

Castelli clothing... is it any good?
I was at the Bolton Ironman on Sunday (not competing, just supporting) and loads of people were wearing it. There's a couple of Cannondale items on sportspersuit atthe moment, and I just happen to own a Cannondale bike, so although I'd look like a tit (imho) it'd kinda match my bike and it's nearly 50% off, so I'm tempted.

But I don't know what size to get... Large because I'm fat... or medium and hope I shrink into it (I'd be a med if I wasn't so porky). Also some medium stuff fits me and some brands' large sizes are too big.

Order both and return the one you don't want. Even with the minimal expense of sending back to SportPursuit it's worth it. Doing the same with a Pearl Izumi jersey that I'm waiting for. Would cost me more than postage back for in fuel/parking/train/whatever for a trip to the shops anyway. Even better with Wiggle/CRC as they have free returns via Collect+.

I've just been to Pizza Hut as part of my 6 year old's birthday celebrations... Going to let my stomach settle and then head out and try to do a 41 mile route I've got that takes in most of the towns in Bolton borough

I'm so tired.

I wanted to go riding tonight, but I'm exhausted and my asthma is playing up for the first time in years, so I don't feel up to it. This sucks.

Well screw you then. I didn't want an invite to go out riding with you anyway. :(

I'll just sit at home and eat cake shall I, then you'll be sorry...

It's pretty tempting but I'm on a cut atm so unless I get out for another 40 miles after work I'd better not :p

I do have about 1300 kcal left to eat today though... Cake for dinner might work...

Yeah I've been out when I can but should do more. Really missing my old commute though. It was easy when I was doing 12-15 miles each way to/from work. Driving to work does me no good at all. I'm stuck in the lose weight gain it back cycle at the mo but it's purely because of diet. Started hitting the weights again though so at least if I overeat sometimes I can call it recomping instead of just pigging out :)

I'm going out tonight if you fancy it! Not quite sure where yet, either to heaton park and back or around rivington.

If you can't turbo infront of your PC/Laptop then TR is not the way to go. At the very least you need Speed & Cadence hooked up to a Garmin/Phone. If you don't have S&C (or even Heartrate) then you're best just watching Youtube or Sufferfest videos as they're done mostly on 'feel' (which is all you really have).

'Cheapest' way to get up and running would be IpBike on your 5S (free) with a Decathlon/eBay S&C (~£20), ANT+ adaptor for your 5S (~£20?) and a Strava Premium subscription (£8 a month?) for the free Sufferfest videos. TR costs the same but it doesn't have any videos, only training sessons and plans.

'Ideal' solution would be an existing laptop/PC, S&C compatible with ANT+/BT (~£30), ANT+/BT HR strap (~£30), ANT+/BT dongle for laptop (~£30), TR subscription (£8 month?) with an optional 'bike computer' (Garmin 500/510, Cateye or similar ~£150). You would then need to source your own 'training videos' but would have your sessions and plans from TR.

Having ANT+ and BT compatible sensors when starting out will help you in future. your 5S will only connect to BT (with an adaptor) but if you change to Android or get a cycling computer (in future) they'll usually use ANT+.

Only thing I'd add to what Roady said is that if you're using Trainer Road and virtual power then the HR strap isn't really needed. I hardly ever use it for training.

Cheers Gents :)

I had a little spin on the turbo last night just to make sure all was well and while sweat was pouring off me I was thinking that using my phone isn't really ideal so I'll take the laptop with me to use.

I'm thinking ANT+ might be the way to go. At some point I'm going to update my Garmin and my wife has a Vivofit so I've got an ANT+ USB stick I can use already :D

I'll pick up a heart rate monitor at some point but I'll start off with speed and cadence.

Not too fussed with videos at this point. I'd rather do 20 or 30 minute focussed sessions than anything longer so some music should be enough to keep the boredom in check.

I was surprised at the maximum resistance (or lack of) that the Cycleops offers when at max setting TBH. I was kind of expecting it to be like riding up a 20% gradient on a road made of treacle but I was able to keep decent pace in top gear for short periods. I may also disconnect the remote resistance control as you don't use it on TR.

Repeated my longest ride of the year today (a modest 36 miles :o ) and it felt pretty good. Off to the middle east for another 2 weeks on Friday so no cycling again :(
