Don't you mean 6800 (Ultegra) if thinking Stages, not 5800 (105 2015)...?

Great average: https://www.strava.com/activities/349500509

Good call on the ANT+ USB stick, you're half way there already! ;)

The novelty of the Turbo will wear off very soon, when it does videos can be a good way to 'pass the time'. In theory anything which is a distraction without requiring 100% of your attention is a good thing. I found watching rugby/Game of Thrones good for base work (maintaining cadence for sweet spot etc) but for the more complex things I needed less of a distraction and more of an encouragement. Sufferfest videos and the GCN pages on Youtube are good for this.

Resistance is futile, kind of :p . I did some drills of low cadence/climbing workouts where I just screwed the turbo really hard against my rear tyre. I used old tyres for this rather than ruin my trainer tyre. It worked well but the smell of hot messy ruined rubber was rather offputting and not something I'd want to do for long periods or more regularly. I turbo outside and even then the smell was pretty bad! :o

Trainer is more to wear you out or to do intervals on than climbing work. There's lots of drills you'll read about online you can use rather than subscribing to something like TR. At least until you're sure you want to follow some kinda training structure then it is invaluable.

Oh I'm sure it will! Even on my first run that seemed like a long 20 minutes! TBH I don't plan on using it much and certainly not this time of year, I just wanted to make sure it worked in case I needed to raise an ebay claim.

Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of resistance for what I need, I was just expecting it to have more resistance than I could overcome in top gear. Further reading shows me that a fluid trainer would do that but not a mag.

I'm not 100% sure I'll go down the trainer road route but I'll certainly need something to give me a bit of structure and anything that gives me some form of feedback of my effort is going to require a subscription.

As I'm a lazy begger I've already gone off the idea of a trainer tyre or dedicated trainer wheel. I'll swap to one of the Kendas that came with my bike over the winter when I'm unlikely to be using it outside much and just use my regular tyre if I use it other times. At £11 a pop for Lithion 2's I won't lose sleep if I wear them out a bit :p

Am I a bit wrong in the head for being slightly annoyed at the silver Cycleops skewer that now has to live on my black / dark grey bike? :p

anyone know how much customisation is possible from canyon? I'm idly eyeing up one of their bikes for bonus time and the stack/reach are glove-like but it's got longer cranks than is my preference

I'm sure I remember reading something about them not being great about it but you could probably find out pretty quickly by just calling/emailing them?

i'm not buying (even if I do, i'm not sure my riding levels at the moment warrant yet another bike) for a while yet.

bizarrely the endurance in a 56 has 172.5mm cranks and the ultimate has 175s....

Unless they're terrible at doing business I'm sure they would be okay with you making a pre-sales query.

To be honest I think it was changing the chainrings that I heard they were funny about. You'd hope they would be receptive to changing the crank arm length for different riders.

My friend just got a Ultimate from them, top end full Dura Ace etc. He asked them a heap of questions about changing stuff or what his options were, I can't remember exactly what he wanted changed I am sure one was crank lengths and the other was could he have black bar tape fitted instead of white and he was happy to pay for their bar tape on top of the bike.... For everyone question he was told NO, it's as it is on the website.

They charged him for the bar tape and shipped it with the bike which had the white bar tape on, so he had to fit the black tape himself. I thought this was hilarious.

Basically they just wont ever deviate from the site, So if you say is it possible to have x model but with the frame in the x colour (which you don't allow on your site but is available on another model) they say no.

It the end it was why I went for a Rose, well that and the fact they basically sold out of most of their bikes.

One of the reasons i went for Rose as well. Could configure most of that on the site itself, and they were happy to swap out anything i mentioned when i had a chat with them by email before purchase. Customer service was fantastic.

It's a multi layered jersey jacket thing that doesn't try to keep you 100% dry. I want to get one but they ain't cheap. Sounds perfect for 80% of my winter riding.

I've tried numerous bibs, similar to you above. I use DHB flashlights/Endura FS260(work branded) for my commutes.

But my long rides, I use my Rapha/Assos bibs, Rapha are the most comfortable overall, although the pad on the Assos is slightly more padded so perfect for Cross riding.

The Alpha does sound good, then again I always 'want' Castelli gear, yet when it actually comes to ordering it and trying it on it isn't a good fit (Velocissimo & Gabba 2) and I don't feel like worth paying the premium for... I may try some Velocissimo's again as I've lost weight and Wiggle have them at £70...

Failing that I think I'll do similar to you (Rapha), although I'm tempted to try Stolen Goat and possibly Lusso's (any of you manc lot got any?)

Shame about your CX ride, some days it's just not meant to be! Although the pics looked good and you kept smiling in them lol ;)

Hey I can't help what happens :D:p

Haha don't worry mate, I'm getting grief as I provided quite an accurate description of where I was applying chamois creme ;)

Rapid two up for me tonight. Great evening for it despite the wind.

Speedy! How were the hills?

Using the Trainer is a bit of a technique you'll soon get the hang of - workouts then become a test of your patience, endurance and mindset. I really struggled to do long Turbo session if I was stressed, just couldn't keep concentration with things on my mind. Distractions worked well for me and the structured workouts from TR really make thing easier (you can just be lazy and follow some of their plans rather than figuring out your own). I'll certainly go back to TR in the autumn/winter, as even Turbo'ing outside (like I do) is safer and easier than being out on the roads in the dark and wet nights.

Using old tyres on the turbo is fine, people will say you'll chew through tyres but unless you're regularly on the turbo then you really won't. I used my road tyres when I only had 1 road bike, eventually I setup my old hybrid (bought a 26" turbo tyre) which worked well.

It's worth checking around your friends (or even a LBS) for some old wheels, local Facebook buy/sell groups can be good for this. Although to be honest you can probably find an old beater with ok wheels for ~£50 then all you would need is a cassette. ;)

The QR bugged me too, I actually swapped my QR's around when changing tyres (which soon becomes a ball ache). Nail varnish would work well (to paint the skewer).

Good commute in this morning, had a tractor behind me at one point so pushed myself (could see I was doing 30kmph, most tractors won't do much faster than this). Sure enough it was a JCB FastTrac - one of the few which can go much faster!:D

[Damien] had some silliness with Canyon over a stem on a bike he bought from them, I forget what exactly. It ended up with them shipping a stem out to him by FEDEX Ultra Max Megadollar 4 Minute shipping or whatever. It was quite bizarre. I think they'd said they'd change it but then didn't so he kicked off and they sent one separately for him to change himself.

I remember because I had to go round his house and hide it in the shed after they texted him to say they'd left it on the doorstep :p

Hill repeats with my mate this morning, 5x7 minutes, at just over FTP on a climb that's flat, steep, flat steep so hard to keep the power on when it flattens out and you end up down a bit on average power compared to a constant gradient.

Started off too easy, increased by 10w on the last 3 reps, but the last one was hurting after 5 minutes.

Also tried to get wiggle to price match Merlin.

Morons couldn't work out how I got the lower price, even after I sent them a screenshot. I think he probably wasn't inputting Australia and taking the VAT off. Oh well, their loss!

Training bunch tonight! My caad 8 felt like a beast after roasting around on an enduro bike yesterday.

3rd fastest time for the route tonight at 22.2mph average. Hopefully manage out on Thursday too which I never seem to manage two in a week.

Well in. Let me know if you're heading on thursday and i'll try and make it down.

Public transport fail meant i didn't get back in time for it again last night.

Think i'll just cycle back to Hamilton from work next time, as it's the only way i can be sure i'll get back in time.

Canyon don't let you change anything that isn't already configurable, e.g cassette.

My flatmate asked a Canyon UK rep at the bike show in London if you could swap white bar tape and saddle for black ones. He said yes.

Emailed Canyon when he ordered and they said no.

Shame that Canyon aren't customizable, I was going to check them out for my next bike. Unfortunately, I need short cranks and a wide saddle though.

Anyone got a Fly6? Been thinking about order one, as I need a new rear light and like the idea of a rear facing camera at the same time. Just wondered if they're worth the money?

Not sure I'll make it tomorrow. I was hoping too as I'd have been up in Oban tonight and back tomorrow afternoon. Change of plans means I'm heading up and back tomorrow bringing the misses down. If I'm back I will try be there.

Just go, usual faces you know like Colin brain(said he'd be double bundy for a chsnge), Brian traynot, morris etc. I'd say it's easier than the Apr as you get a wee breather at the Lee woods and it's an easy pedal at the start to warm up.

I can recommend rose whole heartedly for customisation.

Really love my bike, Love how you can swap components right down to what chain, What cassette /crank ratio, Carbon or alloy spacer etc etc.

I made about 6 or 7 changes to my bike from the norm, Includes changing the brakes to Red 22 ones. Very customisable

No worries, maybe see you there. I know where i'm going to Carluke, so if i have to bail there then it's not too bad.
