has anyone had knee injuries?

I whacked my knee on the car door 4 weeks ago now and it's still playing up. Trying to cycle I can go for a while with no issues then a sharp pain just under the kneecap forms. Mate had to help push me 15km back last weekend with me just doing single leg cycling which was kinda funny at the time. I thought it had settled down again so just used the motorbike to visit some friends but knee being in the bend position with some vibrations made it sore again :(

Doctors booked for tomorrow and I guess might have to book in to a physio?

yeah had problems for a good few years now :) but 2 injuries to the same knee! not much helps bar starps/supports for a while, the knee recovers and then randomly goes poof again after a few months  worst one took a year for the pain to go "away"

on a different note, helmets.. how tight are your chin straps guys? I can't tighten them up too much because it gets SERIOUSLY uncomfortable.

Stood up straight my ones are a bit loose TBH but when on the bike they are loosely against my chin. My biggest problem with them is cutting into my ears as soon as I get a headwind :(

So in my quest to get kitted up for some turbo work (aka my ongoing quest to spend just a little bit more money) I came across trainer road. I've got a compatible turbo on the way for virtual power so what else do I need to get me up and running without spending more than I need (I want stuff that will actually work though :D )

I've got an iPhone 5S through work if that makes any difference?:o

Not tight at all. I can easily fit my finger between the strap and my chin.

which is what makes me wonder, if you crash... can't the helmet move away from your head? say, if you move your head side to side is on without any movement? I can't seem to get my adjustment right, it's either too tight or too loose(imo)

Apparently on modern helmets most of the work is done by whatever mechanism you have for tightening it round your head - it holds on to your occipital bone at the back of your skull.

I was thinking that.. hmm short hair + plastic bits = pain! hence why I feel so uncomfortable with it on, unless its loose obviously..

Bike thong?! Normally I'd google something before asking the question but I'm in work and that ain't happening :p

Should be fine if the helmet is the correct fit for you. I prefer my helmet a little more snug on the back which is why I'm not massively concerned with having the straps uncomfortably tight. All of that said I am finding myself more and more tempted to going back to riding without one :o

Yeah bike thong is a pretty weird term for what it actually is :p

I do have a super round head and I guess short hair = less comfort.. ! I feel like popping down to evans and trying a few other helmets on! maybe the gyro I got is just not a good fit for me.

yeah, I rode for 15k+ miles without one, trying it out now for the sake of argument.. does it make me feel more safe? not really! I've crashed many times, and elbows/knees are the main hit spots.

The only time I've hit my head cycling was when I was riding through some roadworks in the dark. It was pedestrians only, but I went through anyway, and the path pushed me over to the pavement. I hit a dropped kerb that wasn't quite dropped enough at like 6mph and keeled over sideways. Bruised my right hip and shoulder and my helmet tapped the pavement.

Hit my head and woke up in hospital the next day with a bad concussion. Was wearing my helmet, unusual case but dread to think what would have happened if I wasn't wearing it.

I've been in a crash where it certainly felt like it helped a little to have a helmet on but it's not like I'm going to go out and crash in the same way without a helmet to compare :p

Unfortunately you get so much idiotic public attitudes that come across in comments like "She got ran over by a lorry. She wasn't wearing a helmet." - obviously the helmet wouldn't have helped but people seem to think that it's somehow the cyclist's fault they got killed or injured if they weren't wearing one.

What Von said. All the tightening is done by the twisty tighty thing at the back of my helmet. It keeps it nice and snug around my head. It doesn't move.

lol I once hit a dropped kerb at 16mph...
Back wheel just slid across the edge of the kerb and I went flying sideways...

I'm always paranoid about the angle I hit them at now

I'm so tired.

I wanted to go riding tonight, but I'm exhausted and my asthma is playing up for the first time in years, so I don't feel up to it. This sucks.

I picked up the turbo, it was a little dusty, had a few scratches and... had never been used! The bolt that holds the resistance unit on hadn't been done up and the the roller was completely unmarked. Looked like he'd attempted to fit the remote cable and gave up. Maybe he didn't have a 13mm spanner :p

So am I right in thinking that a bluetooth speed and cadence sensor is a more flexible purchase than ANT+ ? I don't really fancy having the lightening adaptor and wahoo thingy hanging out of the back of my phone if I can help it :p

It will work better with your phone but you need a very specific BT dongle for your PC if you plan to use it for Trainer Road (details are on the TR site).

I got a stud in the side of my knee about 5-7 years ago and its still tender to touch now.

Well here's a new one for me. I nearly hit a deer during my ride in this morning. It ran straight across my path and I ended up having to stop for a few minutes to calm my nerves.
