It is a straight swap aye. Shimano rings from Madison are £125 for the pair(£100+£25) for 52/36.

Ultegra chainset is only £190rrp so I'd maybe just get a 105 52/36 chainset and be done with it. They retail at £120 and probably quite a bit cheaper online.

I'm on 52/39 and 12-25 and run out of puff at the 34mph mark. Ideally I'll get an 11 on for a wee boost when folk like greig have a 53-11 to wind up :(

Any of you tubular wearers use Continental Giros? I think they've been discontinued so the prices are low and I'm in the market for a pair of tan wall tubs. I don't want them to be all out of shape like the Vitorria Rallys at a similar price; they were hopelessly rubbish!

Good shout. Probably have to wait a month at least though, as i've just bought new club kit and then forked out for new tyres for the good bike as i've got really bad flat spots on the current ones. Oh yeah, and i need to pay you guys for fixing up the winter bike too! :D

I'm still contemplating before the winter i might upgrade to full 5800 on the winter bike. The chainset needs replaced anyway as the FSA stuff is pants and so are the Tektro brakes. And it would be handy to be 11sp on both bikes. If i do that, i'll pick it up with a 52/36 and get you to fit everything bar the chainset to the winter bike, and then swap the chainset with the compact currently on the good bike - so i'd have the bigger gear on the good bike and the old ultegra compact chainset on the winter bike. Maybe.

Ah the joys of gardening leave.

As of Monday I will have two weeks off work before I start a new job. Got some cycling planned with my first hundred miler planned so am hoping for a nice day during the week to get out and do it. Then possibly heading to Cornwall for a bit so will definitely take my bike if we go.

Need to get more training in for my week in Corsica.

Has anybody tried Strava's live segments on a Garmin 1000 yet?
It popped up in my feed so I've enabled it, no idea how it works though. Do I have to manually send the segments down to the device (like on Garmin Connect), or do they just pop up automatically

Strava says it will be available for the 810 aswell? Is that updated yet?

was looking at that crank too as I need new rings on the sram and it works out less
not sure I can bring myself to do it tho....

Nice winters afternoon early finish from work, ride out to the dam and surrounds for a cool 80km.

Cramped up on the way back, could feel my leg going. Was OK until I had to unclip. Knew when I clipped back in id cramp up and I sure did. Switched to my summer shoes and felt like I could have lifted my saddle a couple of mm. Perhaps that was it, or not enough food or drink.

I think so, I had to 'reconnect' my Garmin and Strava accounts together. Doing it through Strava timed out, but it worked when pairing through Garmin Connect's site. I can tell any difference on my Garmin 1000, but I can't test it out on a ride until my evening commute.

I get the impression that Garmin Connect copies all your 'starred' segments from Strava, and then you have to send them down to your Garmin device through the Garmin Connect website, this effectively converting them to Garmin segments. I hope this isn't the case, as I don't really want to have to star a segment and then send it, I was hoping they would just appear.

Oh right...I noticed this on the Garmin site too.

Having segments 'just appear' would be awful though - you'd end up getting spammed when you went through anywhere remotely popular.

Roady, did you say the Defy guards were no good? I need some guards now.

They work but they do flex and make loads of noise banging your tyres and from flexing (boingy clattering!). I found clearance ok with 23mm but really tight with 25mm and saw some rubbing. No matter how much adjusting I did.

While we're on topic, how do you select from there (Wiggle) what BB 'spindle'/crank size you need? I looked before to replace my FSA which came with my Giant (Defy 1 2015) which I've read online (forums) is a BB90. Also found info saying they're BB86, what can I check? None of the numbers on the BB area read 'BB', '90', or '86' lol

I had a problem with the rear Tektro 540's on my Defy 1 so replaced it with the 5800, was so impressed I replaced the front (which was still working) too! Contemplating replacing the FSA cranks too... But feeling guilty doing it as the bike isn't a year old yet! :o

Believe you need to have them favourited for them to appear.

umm, I don't see you other crank arm and pedal hanging down lol

Sounds like a good plan. You're fsa bb is especially ****e as it's the 19mm spindle one. If it was the 24mm spindle I'd have out a shimano on and you'd see them lasting a lot longer.

That rs31 looks to be 11 speed too so no extra for wheels.

Shimano don't do different spindle lengths like other companies.

Giant should have a press fit bb not bb90 which is on treks. The face of the pressed in cup should have bb91-41 written on it. Also known as bb86 as that's the actual shell width. Shimano chainset just bolts straight into that.

If that's your winters then put me down for a one way ticket...! ;)

Lack of tabs in drink?

So... Garmin Connect seems to be playing up again. Either that or Strava - my lunch rides don't seem to be coming through.

Anti-spam filter? ;)

Does look odd but you can see it there through the rings! Sure it's lined up Berger?!

I've never really had a massive issue with them tbh. I mean, the pads they come with are crud and they aren't cartridge/shoes type either. But once i swapped them for some proper brake shoes with replaceable cartridge pads they've been ok. Just not as good as my Ultegra ones on the other bike. But i commute down a 20% gradient at 40mph+ into a junction with a main dual carriageway every morning and i've not flown straight through it and under a lorry so far. I find that to be an effective test of whether my brake pads need replaced. And my underwear.

Yes, the FSA crank and bb seem to be made of cheese. Either that or it's all my powah! ;) But next time i think it's time to either replace the full crankset or just upgrade to 5800 in it's entirety. I'll see how my budget is then.

And yeah, the rs31 is 11sp with a 10sp cassette+spacer. I was running it on the turbo with a turbo tyre on the other bike through the winter, but swapped it onto the commuter bike after i killed my rear Fulcrum 5 hub. I'm not sure the cost of fixing/replacing a hub on a wheel like that is worth it really, probably about the same cost just to get a cheap replacement wheel.
