I really don't see any point in switching to SLs. Switch to peddles with less float and/or shoes with stiffer soles and you'll get virtually all the benefits on SL without all the drawbacks.

I find the float a little too much on my SPD's (fine for ease commuting just not when pushing myself) and I'm convinced I'll see less lateral foot movement (which is giving me occasional sore/numb toes) on SPD-SL's with the larger base contact with the pedal. Changing shoes would probably do similar but I'm not aware I can do much about the float with SPD's...

just run different pedals in the winter

Rapha sale is now on guys. Just order myself the Sky Tricolor Classic jersey.

Any deals on bibs worth hammering the site for? Or is it all selling out as soon as they drop a price lol

Just cracked 3000 miles on the S3 <3

<snip>

Ordered some new 60mm carbon clinchers to celebrate, thinking of trying the new s-works tyres as they're meant to be superb.

Are those handle bars 3T aeronovas? If so alloy or carbon? And, how are you finding them??

Thinking of them for my propel...

I think the pro team bibs were 150 in the sale , i picked up a pair of Team Sky pro bibs last year and have to say they are fantastic, and worth the money, if you wait until a bit later in the year and dont mind the branding, the Team Sky sale will be on and most of the stuff in it gets knocked down to half price. My bibs were £90 last autumn i think.

You absolutely can. Different SPD pedals have different float. You can see examples in the descriptions for pedals on Wiggle/CRC/etc.

Bloody Garmin segments, said I beat one of my PRs by 1 second, get home and Strava says I'm a second slower grrr.

Got the rest of the week off work, so I'm on a mission to find a new bike. I went to a newly opened shop today, but they couldn't really help me. Very windy out there today!

I have another shop to visit on the cards tomorrow, really nice climb on the way, so really looking forward to that.

Good shout, there was one point last year when the Sky replica bibs were £75. I'll hold out and hopefully snipe a pair later in the autumn ;)

Hmmm! Got me thinking and researching now!

Edit: No mention of different float on the M520 and M540's?

There's also slight differences with some of the cleats. The ones that came with my pedals are slightly larger and in theory give you a more secure purchase. Personally I've not noticed a huge difference. Whereas my new pedals have FAR lower amounts of float than my old Shimano SPDs.

(edited to remove evidence of my poor memory)

edit2: What is it with me and not spelling the word 'pedal' correctly? :/

Which pedals are you using?

Maybe this is it, moving away from cheap Shimano shoes to something better. Although not many shoes come with cleats, including Sidi?! :p

They're S-Works Aerofly Carbon bars. Was originally looking at the 3T Aeronova's and a few people I've raced with have them, but they have an enormous reach on them, so much so I'd need to drop a couple of stem sizes which put me off.

Seen quite a few people I race with using them so can't be bad if they work with your fit.

Managed to find a set of Aerofly's in Matte finish which I way prefer as well, apparently they only come on specialized bikes, not aftermarket.

Are they 3rd party cleats?
Shimano only list the single-release (black) and multi-release (silver) cleats.

I know you get various different float angles with different SPD-SL cleats (yellow/blue/red, i think?) but didnt know they had the same for SPDs.

I have overpriced Xpedo M-Force 8 Ti pedals but there are plenty of other SPD pedals that offer reduced float.

My shiny summer shoes are Sidi Dragon 3 SRS. No you mention it, maybe my slightly different cleats came with the pedals rather than the shoes.

They're third party. They came with my pedals. I was mistaken above (will edit my post now).

I think they did years ago, but I've not seen them for a long time

there's a world of difference between brand new cleats and the set I have that are a couple of years old though...

There's definitely a difference with new cleats, yeah. I have three sets of SPD shoes. My winter ones have new Shimano cleats, my bling ones have the Xpedo cleats and my knackered old Shimano shoes have really old cleats. The really old cleats are a bit lose but I can't tell much of a difference between the two other sets.

Ahhh good shout on the BBB's. Neoprene? I've got some DHB neoprene which I'm wearing into the ground. They've been fantastic. Bought a pair of PlanetX ones (same cost as the DHB) and they're quite poor fitting and badly designed in comparison.

Socks, I've worn DHB Coolmax up until now (except in the winter of course, I wear PX Flanders merino's). Considering getting more colours to at least match some of my gear more... See me in the middle of this pic playing with my garmin (in the red/blue/black Northwave). But is getting colour matching socks just too tarty?!:eek:

Cleats & Shoes.

I've been running SPD's since starting clipless but I feel I should be heading towards SPD-SL when looking at my next shoes (probably not until next year). A few months back I bought a pair of SPD winter GTX boots for the wet weather... Will feel slightly silly only getting 1 winter out of them so what are my options? They don't appear to have cutouts to fit SPD-SL cleats, are there adaptors you can get? Drill holes in them and fit my own plates?

Yeah theyre Neoprene, I don't like them, not just the ones ive got, the idea of wearing any overshoes, they look stupid but in the Yorkshire winter when its in the minus every morning it'll be worth it, I need new socks for winter as the ones I've got are quite thin.

I ride SLs, I got them at the start of my clipless adventure lol, haven't looked back since, ill use them throughout winter, although clipping in will be a mission in them I suspect, I'm finding it very hard atm I think my cleats need changing, they're looking very worn.

On the upside, I got a new bike cleared with the Mrs this weekend! Budget 5-600 so looking at a second hand CAADX unless there's better for the money? I have to sell the MTB though which isn't an issue as I intended on doing that anyway.

Regarding winter socks, I can recommend the PX Flanders Thicky Merino's. I think I got them in a 'buy 2 get a 3rd set free' kinda deal. Flanders lion is pretty appropriate for the weather I generally wear them in! The design was hidden/covered most of the time as I wore overshoes nearly all through the winter for warmth as well as the protection. With merino socks if the temperatures got near to 4-5 degrees my feet would be far too hot - merino is incredible for warmth! Obviously at full non-deal price they're not that great, but well worth it if you can get them cheap and need quantity for commuting rather than sunday best ;)

Lucky you with the bike! CAADX would be one of my first looks too!

Probably going to move house before I can justify a new bike... I know which is cheaper!

The pedals explains it! I've had sets of cleats with each set of pedals, both sets being the SH-51's (along with a set I bought at the LBS after I lost a bolt). Maybe the ones you have are like the SH-52's?
