I cried so hard that I wussed out of Blaze Hill :p Fun and relatively fast 32 miles though (given how slow I was up Brickworks at least).

Went for a ride up Cat & Fiddle East of Macclesfield on Saturday at long last, was glorious! new fav climb, although I think we were lucky with weather, I imagine it gets quite cold/horrid at the top in winter.

Stopped at the Peak View Tearooms for a slice of cake and coffee (had like 8 different cakes to choose from!) was delicious.

Looking forward to giving it a good fast attempt at somepoint.

I've still never climbed it properly, only descended and been up bits of it. I'll have to give it a try before the weather starts to get too bad.

My legs are ruined from my ~40 mile saturday ride (fairly normal) and 3 mile sunday dog walk (not normally that distance)... Rear muscles of my thighs (biceps femoris?).
I'm blaming the extra dog walking although the saturday ride was hard after a busy week for me (of riding and work). Weather here is fantastic (and I drove today) so in 2 minds about a recovery ride later or just an easy evening...? Back to commuting tomorrow as my dental issue is sorted (reason I drove).

I'm aiming at an easy week to recover fully before a 50 mile (more like 55 with my travels there) next saturday which is around the max distance I've done yet. May do a ride with a friend on thursday but it'll be as sedate as possible.

Also, I think I really need to look at recovery smoothies or something, I really struggle to eat after rides - cup of coffee/biscuit/cake is easy but not something with protein! Just no appetite! Any recommendations? I've had stomach 'issues' (just noises!) from Sis gels, powder energy things and etixx powder energy. High5 tabs and gels I'm ok with, Wiggle tabs I'm ok with, so I would naturally head towards Wiggle/High5 protein shakes unless someone else says otherwise! :)

I like the High5 Recovery in chocolate - makes for a half decent milkshake. Pretty minging made with water, even if it is meant to be absorbed quicker.

I'm well unfit! I need to come up with a plan to build my stamina / endurance, also, could do with some advice on what nutrition i sohuld use before and during a ride.

To put it into context, i've never ridden a road bike until today, had a couple of MTB's a few years ago which hardly got used, and certainly not off road!

Here's my activity so far. I am struggling on climbs, i need to build some muscle in my legs.

Also, had my first fall when i forgot to clip out of my pedal when i realised i hadn't started strava, fortunately, i got out just in time.

Just drink a pint of chocolate milk. It's an almost perfect balance of carbs/protein/fats for recovery. Only do this after your longer/tougher rides though.

That's not terrible for someone that is unfit and just starting cycling :)

Until you're riding for longer distances I wouldn't worry too much about nutrition (unless your diet is awful, in which case you need to think about that as a whole and outside of cycling). One thing that will almost certainly benefit you is to get a cadence meter though and use that whilst you ride. Try to maintain 90 cadence at all times. New riders tend to have a habit of mashing the harder gears, which will knacker your legs far sooner than maintaining a good cadence will do (this is especially true on hills - spinning up hills is a far better approach than struggling with a hard gear).

Aside from that, just keep building up. Try to ride at least 3 times per week and increase the distance by about a mile each time. In no time at all you'll be knocking out 20 miles and then you can start to think about where to go next.

We all started somewhere. Keep it up and you'll be surprised how fast you make progress.

Will take a look, the GP's look good and what I was willing to pay.
Thanks Guys.

Just checked and Evans closes in 7 minutes and I'm still on the train. Damn.

Light ride home, bus tomorrow maybe. :(

Do a click & collect order then - you get mugged on the "standard" instore pricing on tyres.

I'm the same Roady, I get really hungry during my rides, but as soon as I stop my appetite goes. The following day is another story though :D

I use Whey Concentrate Protein (Chocolate Smooth flavour), from myprotein. I mix it with milk, and find it quite easy to consume after a ride. I also take it on weekday mornings to give myself extra protein in my diet (25g per day). Would definitely recommend it.

I also found Etixx Recovery Bars to be quite effective, and didn't taste terrible! Although they work out a little expensive if you eat one a day.

Dunno how you lot don't have an appetite after rides! I'm always so hungry, but then I hardly eat unless I'm doing 4hours+ in the saddle. (usually couple of bananas for 60 miles will do me!

How do you manage to say fueled for the ride? I go out first thing at the weekends (about 6.30 am) without eating and found that I can only manage about 25 miles without having anything to eat else I will bonk and have to crawl home at about 10 mph. I guess the fact I'm 100kgs doesn't help.

Needless to say they'll smash the Strava climbing challenge lol

Quite tempted to do it, once...!
Im hoping to beat the Strava climbing challenge this month, got 15,000ft to go, 2 weeks left so it should be do-able! I have a route home that can take me 1400ft.

Id love to have a go at Ventoux!
