With the amount of money you've spent on replacing cables early, you could have just got Di2 and then never had to replace cables or re-index in the first place :p
Show me where I can get Di2 for less than £30! ;)
I'm pretty sure that ALL of the battle will be about my weak legs!
You'll be fine on 34-28 tbh.
Agreed, you should be ok on 34*28. Many/any of the climbs over 20% for more than a couple of yards? Personally I enjoy spinning my 34*30 (and still have a bail out) but I like to be spinny spinny on hard 15%+ climbs when I'm not stood. The 25% or more I've done I'm generally stood in 34*28 or 30 not 34*32.

I've had some mudguard woes this past week with my Raceblade Long's with the clips wearing and the guards coming unclipped on some rough roads. Couple that with me moving my guard supports to tweak their position and then breaking the feable torx head on the crappy single Giant bolt I used when last refitting them.

Cue some sawing to get a flat head on the top of the bolt to get a decent screw driver on it (done this successfully with 2 out of the 3 others I fitted)... To no avail!

Running out of options I cut a cross head into it... Again the cheap alloy it's made of gave up before any kind of movement. I was stumped. Then in 20 minutes of madness (don't ask!) I figured it was a good idea to drill the screw out with a hand held battery drill... This is with it fitted in carbon forks!

(that's not a crack in the picture)

Thankfully I've got a steady hand and lady luck shone down on me! I stopped every 20/30s to let it cool down so the drilling was a very gradual & slow process. The release in tension once drilled was enough that it easily came undone. It's not something I would recommend and now thinking about it (in the cold light of day) I realise how idiotic I was probably being! Got away with it this time (thankfully!) :o:rolleyes::eek::p

GIANT, the bolts you supply with your guards are RUBBISH!

As I'm away on holiday next week I've taken the chance of dropping the bike into the LBS for a service.

First one it's had since being put together in August. It's covered 4,000 miles in that time.
A quick look over by them has revealed the following is required.

Chain
Rear cassette
Front outer ring
brake & gear cables.
Service rear wheel hub & true rear wheel

Bike is being fully stripped down & checked over including headset & BB checked over but I'm not expecting any other issuses to be found.

The crankset has done over 20,000 miles as they were fitted to my previous bike so I'm not that surprised they need changing as I tend to ride 80% of the time in the larger ring

I am surprised however that a new rear cassette is needed after just 4K :(
It's removed & cleaned every 3 or 4 weeks, the same with the chain.

Chap in the shop recommeded that the chain is replaced every 1,500 - 2,000 miles, would you guys agree?

Sounds about right on the chain - some have luck replacing less often but that's what I tend to go for.

How much are you paying for the front outer chainring? Sometimes it's not much more money for an entire new crankset

Really hard to gauge as it depends on condition, weather etc but I'd get a chain checker and just give it a quick check every now and again. I think I did 2500 miles before changing mine.

Then it's not much more money on top of that for a power meter too ;)

Front Rings shouldn't really need changing, ever, if you stay on top of your chain.

If you've not changed the chain in 4000 miles I would suspect this had led to the cassette needing replacing. about 2000 miles for me depending on usage, just check it's within tolerance, replace the chain regularly and you don't need to change the other bits.

Been offered a Felt IA4 for £1800, think just framset, forks and bars, trying to work out if this is any good. Ridden once.

Did you descend Hardknott like this? :)

dafu............. I'll be full on the brakes soiling myself!

Hardknott is about 25% for over 250m

It's not your usual 'steep' climb!

To maintain 70RPM on that with a 34 x 30 you'd need to be pushing about 7w/kg..

Guess I'm just being tight on chains !

I was planning on getting it changed anyway as I only have one proper service by a shop per year. The rest of the time I do my own.
Haven't had a price on the chainring yet, they're calling me back later in the week as they won't start working on the bike until Monday.

To be fair, I've had 4 good years out of it, so it's due a replacement. As the BB is the same age, I'll probably just get them to change it as well.

I wish I generated enough power to warrant a powermeter !!

Good point. Time for a PM Robzere31 :p

Sounds like a plan, though you'll probably pay a lot more buying all those bits from the shop rather than sorting them yourself :)

Mekk Poggio 2.8 is on sale at wiggle for £1400.

Thats a whole lot of bike for not much money.
Carbon frame, carbon fork, deep carbon wheels and 105.

That's Hardknott? Looks beautiful & great road surface?! :D

Always brings a tear to my eye when I spot Martyn doing some of his famous tricks in videos :(

Would agree on the chain, usually less in bad weather and cheapy KMC/Shimano rubbish which is made of cheese. The KMC X11L my Giant came with lasted under 900 (winter), I replaced with a couple of SRAM X1 11 which tended to last 1200/1400 miles then I tried a cheap (£16) Shimano HG701 which has done nearly 900 and is about ready to be changed again (0.75 on my chain checker). I'm tempted to try an Ultegra branded chain next as the SRAM are not on sale much and seem to be out of stock everywhere atm... Anyone with 11 speed chain suggestions? did see a barely used Duraace on ebay go for £22 but it was only 110 link.

Your chain wear will have worn your cassette. The amount of kit they're changing then cassette is a fairly consumable part, certainly with a new chainring and chain going on there! Just ask them for the old cassette back - use it on a turbo wheel or flog it to someone for a few quid.

Agreed, I saw a 5800 crankset with less than 300 miles on it go for £52 recently! Shame it was a 175mm!

Much can be said for changing much of a well worn groupset together as, like you say, you've had a good 4 years out of the majority of it! :)
What's the cheapest any of you have seen a new Ultegra GS?
CRC always shows up as the cheapest when I look (and always shows up on CW's 'deal week' popup thing).

Agreed, fantastic setup for the money!

Quite the looker too!

Got an Ultegra chain on mine again. First one lasted 2500 miles so they seem pretty good.

Do you lubricate your chains with grinding paste? 900 miles is absurdly low.

Yep, KMC chains are fine. I'd expect Shimano chains to be similarly fine, given they're just rebadged KMC ones without the decent split links.
