Aye. I was walking up after my legs gave out with my 34-28. The final slope down from Hardknott was terrifying as the surface is very...bobbly...which lead to my rear wheel locking up down the final ramp. Truly terrifying. Even walking up is knackering.

From reading around, I think only Great Dun Fell is harder than Hardknott (in the UK).

Great Dun Fell is easier than Hardknott by quite some way imo. That said, I did Hardknott on my second day in the lakes, but even so.... GDF is a very gentle climb on a very good surface.

Hmm, my master plan of including a longer morning commute just doesn't seem feasible, I just live too damn central. Everywhere decent to ride is 7-10 miles away at best and all on the busiest roads to get to them meaning a tonne of traffic. :(

One wishes he lived closer to the countryside or on the edge of the city.

One also needs to get rid of some kit as my Altura stuff is just too baggy for my liking (Altura small is pretty much a DHB Large) and maybe one of my DHB Roubaix jerseys. Too much hassle to sell though...

Had a !00 mile ride due on the 2nd may,its a bank holiday and i cant get there until 9.30 am,ride starts at 8 :(
Travel the day before and stay over? B&B? Get someone with a car to drop you off? :)
The overlay on that video is awesome.
As noted, it's VIRB edit. I've copied the .mp4 rides from my VIRB's card before now and then loaded them into VIRB Edit then imported the Garmin info from my 810 (so no VIRB connected) and it syncs the data fine, so should work from a GoPro .mp4. There's lots of different looks and info for overlays. I quite like the grade one on that video, never noticed it was there before!
I found a .fit file of it in the Activities folder (on the Garmin not the SD card) then ran it through corrupt time tool on fitfiletools and it seemed to be fine... though it only got the first 44 miles of the 73 mile ride :/ It was definitely tracking the rest as I checked it 2 miles before home and it said 71 miles.

This only ever happens when following a course so I half suspect it's some OSM/Garmin compatibility issue. I might have to try a different version of the OSM map.
Yeah I've changed maps since the last time I had one (from talkytoster to whichever Rain linked in his guide), so fingers crossed.

The 43 mile ride I lost the Garmin only showed the first 0.8 miles (where I'd noticed it frozen and reset it)!
Maybe I ought to do some catalogue poses of me in my best gear on top of a mountain pumping up a tyre I've just repaired...
Make sure you do them in black & white so they look as retro as the pump... :p

Yea thats the software i was using, i never got it to work because it would freeze up everytime i tried to do the overlay. Ive since installed a new SSD and Win 10 so might be worth another try.

Agreed, the service at Tolos restaurant is incredibly slow, but i had a couple meals there and have to say the pizza was fantastic, the gf enjoyed her meal to. Shame they arent a little quicker tho

I live in Bucks just outside the M25 and work in Edinburgh so it would be a hell of a cycle to work  Scots don't take bank holidays as they are allowed to bank the days and use them when they want so normally work so no excuse.

They'd better be bullet proof at nearly a kilo each - they're basically just solid rubber tyres!

I could just carry an entire spare wheel with a fresh tyre on it and it'd still be lighter.

It wasn't a serious comment - there are no international bank holidays that I'm aware of :)
Oh. Many lols. *golfclap*

They are...! Enjoy your hol!

They are weighty, they easily made the other halfs 9.7kg commuter 11kg! But I know for a fact she'll ride into any pothole and goes up and down some quite large dropped curbs and hasn't punctured them yet! They're so solid she's not even pinch punctured them... Yet! :o

Although this option is probably lighter:

I know there are plenty of reviews knocking around for the BikeBoxAlan elsewhere but I'd be keen to hear the experiences of anyone here that has one or has used one recently :)

First trip abroad in June and possibly again later in the year (and many more after that) so whilst it's not a cheap outlay it should see it's fair use. The 7 year guarantee is attractive, as is being a hard case, and I've a discount code for an e-tailer so it'll be just under the £400 mark.

Yeah they are heavy but on my commuter/winter bike I couldn't care less, just makes me fitter for the summer if I use a heavier bike daily and through the winter :D

Margain gainz!... I considered that myself but the old bike I was using was made of lead (12kg) and guards were rubbish. Not that guards are any better on my Defy but I told myself - if 50% of my riding is commuting to and from work, why not enjoy it on a faster bike?! So my Defy became my 'do it all'. To be honest as it's a ~£900 bike I wasn't too concerned with it picking up some dinks and bangs as I'll buy myself a 'summer' bike at some point for the fun stuffs (and then probably a winter bike too!) ;)

Benny:
ALAN! :D

Sorry couldn't resist
My mate text me at lunch about going for a blast after work. Winds are horrible here but the rain has held off. Didn't bring a cool jersey so this could be interesting...! :o

Used one for Mallorca last year, i would give a a 7/10 my bike got there and back in once peice but the wheels are a bit crap on it for moving around and on the way back i did have some damage to some stuff in the box, i think it got put at the bottom of the pile or something and it crushed to box down, if it wasnt for the anti crush pole i would have been in trouble.

I would probably rent one first, see if you like it. If i had to choice to buy i would probably look elsewhere. Its by no means a bad box, but i saw other people at the airport and their boxes definitely looked better value. I think Thule? the roof rack guys make a good one

I've not used a BikeBoxAlan but I've used a variety of different boxes over the years. For Mallorca, I borrowed a Polaris Bike Pod Pro and Bike Pod EVA. Both seemed to work OK, although I found packing the EVA much easier than the Pro which seemed like a bit of a squeeze even without much else in the box.

The easier packing of the EVA was offset by the fact it is pretty big and unwieldy compared to the smaller Pro.

Both boxes protected the bikes and wheels within fine on the way out. I've not unpacked them coming home yet but both looked OK visually.

The BikeBoxAlan is probably equally secure but seems easier to pack and maneuvre so I'll be renting those next. I guess the value of buying one largely depends on how many times you plan to use it and whether you have space to store it? Our local place was about £40 a week so obviously needs quite a few trips before buying one is more economical, plus you have to store it somewhere.
