Haven't been on the bike a lot this year with other stuff going on but I did make it to LBL over the weekend.

Completed the 271km route 90 mins quicker than in 2014 even with the lack of training. Weather was horrible though, wet and windy. I was warm enough climbing but on the descents I was freezing. Not a great way to spend 11 hours!

Nice work. I hope you stayed on the front of the 70+ peleton for the whole ride :p

Wheel sent back to online retailer and have confirmed via email today that wheel cost will be refunded in full. They've completely missed out any information about the subsequent loss I've incurred, i.e my Ultegra rear derailleur that is now in 3 pieces or my SPD SL Cleats which are little more than a bits of mangled plastic (after the 3 mile walk home). I've dropped them a subsequent reponse, specifically questioning what they propose for this additional loss.

As a side note, my replacement wheel set (CXP Pro / Shimano 105 Hubs from Rose Bikes in germany) are lovely things! I didn't purchase the original wheel from these guys.

So advice needed now, the cycle company that is named after a legendary wizard are refusing to compensate me for my subsequent loss. They go on to say they have refunded my wheel as a gesture of goodwill! (Gesture of goodwill??! ITS KNACKERED!!)

My google skills have come up with the following:

“The law says I’m entitled to be paid damages when a faulty item causes damage.” from the CAB Website

I'm disappointed with their stance, any tips before i start throwing legalities around?

Amazing ride Dave, well done! Impressive considering the conditions and less training! How did it go? Any notable climbs/areas you loved/hated? :)

Legendary wizard? (having a brain freeze due to the huge hailstorm we just had here!) Just name and shame them! :D

You could start throwing legalities around, although I always tend to ask questions (that you then get black and white answers to) to resolve problems, something like "how do you expect me to claim for replacement parts damaged by the wheel you supplied being faulty and not fit for purpose?". You could link them to the CAB page and say "You are very lucky I am not seeking for personal injury as I could easily have been thrown under a bus!". Hopefully someone with some sense there will see you are entitled to some compensation for the damage caused! :o :(

what cycling clubs are around south london/croydon area? I want to suggest something for my bro but dulwich paragon seems a bit.. meh ;)

It's worth emailing them quoting the legal stuff to see what they say.
If they still refuse, I doubt you'll get anywhere by actually starting any legal process against them.
I think it would be difficult to prove that it was their wheel which damaged your derailleur and not the other way around.
They could also argue that it was caused by your negligence - you said you noticed a problem as soon as you fitted the wheel but rode it anyway. (Did you tell them about that? ;))

4c for me this morning & freezing fog.

Put the heater on for the first time this year and broke out the winter jacket on the bike.

I didn't go to thermal longs, bibs & knee warmers. There is still a way to go before deep winter. Don't want to peak too soon and have nowhere to go when it drops below zero.

Haha, now it's our turn to get revenge for you posting about all the nice weather through our winter.

...no wait, it's snowing here :(

I think the video evidence of the 3cm side to side play in wheel, clearly interfering with the derailleurs fixed mounting point (whats left of it!) would be pretty good evidence that the wheel damaged it, rather than my derailleur systematically loosening each and every spoke on the wheel :)

I don't profess to being a wheel builder, the few spokes that i grabbed prior to fitting, although felt a bit looser than my previous wheel, were not as loose as after the incident. As far as i'm concerned now, the wheels was poorly built which has caused all of the spokes to become untensioned and yes i did tell them that the some of the spokes felt a bit looser than my previous wheel. Without going out and spending £60 on a spoken tension meter, is the onus on me to make sure that the goods supplied were as they should have been, without actually having the insight or understanding to confirm?

Anyway, Merlin Cycles have just reiterated their stance, no refund on the derailleur or cleats. I'll wait for the refund to hit my account and then fire off the legalities and speak with my credit card company about getting a refund for the remaining. My first (and last order) with Merlin cycles.

I don't mind the cold too much. Or the wind. Or the rain.

Just one at once, and in that order of preference!

Not a fan of the wet at all really unless it is properly raining biblically, then it's OK, in not sure why I prefer this, perhaps because you are guaranteed to get wet and know what the road is going to be like.

Think my order would be

a bit cold > rain > a lot cold > snow > hail > wind

I hate the wind, but then my main bike has 60mm rims. I don't mind the rain so much, but only if it's raining when I'm already out - otherwise it's likely I'll just stay in, or travel by train :p

Anyone take a look at this - does this look fishy??

https://www.strava.com/activities/544572436#13133022452

Not only did she take the QOM, she took the KOM by tons of time (like 20 seconds and outputing 600W) in the last few segments - also max speed 62mph???

Looks like she forgot to turn off her garmin after getting in the car.
first part of the ride averages 11mph.
then there's a 20 minute stop (presumably where she gets into a car)
after that, the average speed is 26mph.

Just need to tell her to crop off the end of the ride.

Ice is a hard pass for me.

Merlin I imagine.
Ah, never had any dealings with them so can't comment. Anyone here used them and needed to contact support?

3 degrees here this morning @7am and several hailstorms since. Sun is out but windchill is keeping it at 4-5 degrees! :(

It's a typical end of spring/start of summer British thing where the season change totally screws everything up (and we get 4 seasons in 2 weeks)! ;)

Small claims you might as they're a British company after all - I imagine you'd have more luck there than anywhere else as most of the big etailers are not UK companies. Another solution could be to see if the damage was covered over any bike insurance you have, but to be honest the cost of an Ultegra RD (£40-50?) is probably the cheaper option after paying any excess and hike in future policy prices...

Great jacket, you'll love it! So very tempted to get myself one of the Light NoRain jerseys... :o

The exchange thing works well, although you do run the risk of them taking a while to restock (especially with brands like Sportful), or the line becoming EOL and them never getting any more. I generally have a look around other sites and look for reviews to get an idea of when the product was launched and if it's been superseded or not yet.

I'll hold onto it for a while and see how their stock changes. It might be an okay fit but the shoulder area did feel a little tight and I can't see my shoulders getting any smaller.. Large might end up a bit too big in other areas though.

Just emailed them about the Windslam Long Sleeve jersey... my rear pocket has become unthreaded from the top band that holds it tight. Quite disappointed as that's only lasted about 5 months and maybe 10 rides. It's no longer available and nothing else is comparable for the same price - £19.
