Yeah they are heavy but on my commuter/winter bike I couldn't care less, just makes me fitter for the summer if I use a heavier bike daily and through the winter :D

Wasn't there an article about that being a bit of a fallacy? Might have imagined it though :)

I'm a "one bike does all" kind of person so they wouldn't work for me anyhow but I think I'd be scared of how much of a pain they're meant to be to change even if I did have a dedicated commuter. I also am not sure I could accept just how ridiculously heavy they are. Tyres heavier than my wheels, dafudge :/

I live in Bucks just outside the M25 and work in Edinburgh so it would be a hell of a cycle to work  Scots don't take bank holidays as they are allowed to bank the days and use them when they want so normally work so no excuse.

How is it that a challenge that is due to last for 1 day and be so easy is one I cannot do as I'm due to working in Edinburgh.

Used one for Mallorca last year, i would give a a 7/10 my bike got there and back in once peice but the wheels are a bit crap on it for moving around and on the way back i did have some damage to some stuff in the box, i think it got put at the bottom of the pile or something and it crushed to box down, if it wasnt for the anti crush pole i would have been in trouble.

I would probably rent one first, see if you like it. If i had to choice to buy i would probably look elsewhere. Its by no means a bad box, but i saw other people at the airport and their boxes definitely looked better value. I think Thule? the roof rack guys make a good one

I've not used a BikeBoxAlan but I've used a variety of different boxes over the years. For Mallorca, I borrowed a Polaris Bike Pod Pro and Bike Pod EVA. Both seemed to work OK, although I found packing the EVA much easier than the Pro which seemed like a bit of a squeeze even without much else in the box.

The easier packing of the EVA was offset by the fact it is pretty big and unwieldy compared to the smaller Pro.

Both boxes protected the bikes and wheels within fine on the way out. I've not unpacked them coming home yet but both looked OK visually.

The BikeBoxAlan is probably equally secure but seems easier to pack and maneuvre so I'll be renting those next. I guess the value of buying one largely depends on how many times you plan to use it and whether you have space to store it? Our local place was about £40 a week so obviously needs quite a few trips before buying one is more economical, plus you have to store it somewhere.

Thanks guys, noted. :)

Grabbed the video from Saturday... you can see how slow I make the turn :D

In before descending on the hoods comment :D I need to sort out my brake lever reach... a bit too far for comfort.

That descent is basically my approach to Marlow every ride. I hate the first corner. Second time I went down there I almost over cooked it and went off! The second one isn't so bad.

Did you climb back up there? It's quite tough. Steep at the start, around the corner, then it flattens a bit before kicking back up. It's actually Quarry Wood Road you went down, Cookham Dean descent is more like back into Cookham :)

Another windy ride home, joy. I made life harder for myself, as I have done a few days now, by riding about 3/4 of a mile uphill out of the saddle on the home stretch. Is that good for something? Core, maybe? It's hard, whatever it is.

Ah nice. I quite like that Winter Hill climb too... think I've done it twice now. Had an X5 tailgating me up it (narrow singletrack) so when it opened up a little with a passing place I moved left as much as I could and waved him past me... did he bother using the passing place extra room? Nah... just passed me close.

I didn't climb back up it as I just went pretty direct from Reading through to Clewer, Windsor, Datchet and back around Heathrow perimeter roads. Really flat ride back by comparison which is probably how I managed to increase average speed from 19.1mph in Reading to 19.5mph by the time I was home.

I'll have to try ascending it some other time. I was a little tempted to go back up it after descending but needed to make it to Reading for 1PM.

I was wondering if this has any real benefit... I've been making a conscious effort to get out the saddle a little more often recently and recruit some different muscles... including all of Box Hill for 25 mins... legs certainly felt it after that.

My Sportful Fiandre NoRain jacket turned up. It seems like a nice warm jersey, kinda similar to the dhb blok micro soft shell too. Only one rear pocket is a bit disappointing as I generally segregate pump, phone, food and certainly wouldn't want to mix keys and pump with my phone. I think the size might be a bit tight so kinda tempted to try a large but Wiggle are OOS... Maybe I'll do a Roady and wait until they have more stock in Large then do an exchange :D

Which climb?

I cycled out to Reading for a BBQ via the Marlow stelvio back down to near Henley and into Reading the other day. Quite a nice climb you guys have there though road surface is terrible in places.

There was a descent from Cookham Dean that was quite fun but couldn't really go that fast as I didn't know the road and didn't fancy misjudging speed into a hairpin! A little bit wet too but it did look like a nice climb to go up as well.

The hill from High Wycombe up to Flackwell Heath is nasty. Short, but really steep. It takes you under the M40 road bridge, get to the top, turn right then left and follow the road into Marlow. That's the start of my 33 mile loop, which then leads on through Henley, up the hill towards Cookham and then up Hammersley Lane home.

Is that the road that leads from the Jolly Farmer? It then goes into Marlow and comes out right next to the Compleat Angler?

Has anybody here any experience with the Topeak DynaWedge (small)? After a little bit of googling it doesn't appear you can get much in it (levers, Co2 canister & small multitool) but its quoted as being 0.8ltrs internal?!

I currently have the Evoc tour bag which is 1ltr and i manage to fit a tube, Co2 canister, tyre levers, large multitool, torque wrench and small tin (patches, spare bolts, glue etc). Unfortunately the bag fails at the first hurdle and its an absolute bugger to unzip, due to the zip opening up towards and under the saddle.

I bought a B&W type bike box (was cheaper to actually get the Canyon branded one when I bought my bike) but I wasn't thinking as now I have nowhere to store it (won't fit through the loft hatch). Bit of an own goal that, but it's a great box and comes with padded wheel bags, padded interior. Still recommend using foam tubes around the frame though, even if you have a hard shell and padded interior.

Urgh, legs are pretty dead this morning. It was also ridiculously cold. Took about 20 minutes for my hands to get to the point where they weren't utterly burning.

What happened to the weather we had a week ago?

Evoc bike bag here. Picked it up almost brand new for 100 quid and fits under the spare bed. Perfect for majorca last time around. Going to come in use and much cheaper than renting each time. Plus can loan it out for a few beers to friends.

Have you got a Strava link to that? im not sure ive done that one yet.

Thats the one, comes out just before it by the bridge

Had a bit of an issue with a new rear wheel i bought from an online retailer (who shall rename nameless at the mo). Fitted the rear wheel on the sunday evening, noticed the spokes didnt feel as tight as my previous rear wheel it was replacing, took out for a quick mile test ride, all fine.

Started my 12 mile commute to work on the Monday morning, get approx 3 miles in and get a very noticeable rear end wobble, as i start to slow so i can get off and investigate, all hell breaks loose as my rear ultegra dérailleur is sucked into the rear wheel. Get off the bike, the rear derailleur is gonna, snapped in half and hanger bracked sheared off. The rear wheel; every single spoke is so loose that there is approx 2cm side to side movement within the frame, this movement is what has led to "grabbing" the RD and sucking it into the wheel.

Have sent an email to said retailer (and followed up with a phone call after not having a reply after 3 days), explaining the situ and asking how they're going to resolve. I've set the expectation that i want my rear derailleur replacing, new pair of SPD cleats (mine are now destroyed after walking the 3 miles home) and the cost of the wheel refunded as i've now purchased elsewhere. They have asked that the wheel is returned to them to investigate before being able to comment on the above.

To be continued...

Wheel sent back to online retailer and have confirmed via email today that wheel cost will be refunded in full. They've completely missed out any information about the subsequent loss I've incurred, i.e my Ultegra rear derailleur that is now in 3 pieces or my SPD SL Cleats which are little more than a bits of mangled plastic (after the 3 mile walk home). I've dropped them a subsequent reponse, specifically questioning what they propose for this additional loss.

As a side note, my replacement wheel set (CXP Pro / Shimano 105 Hubs from Rose Bikes in germany) are lovely things! I didn't purchase the original wheel from these guys.

Haven't been on the bike a lot this year with other stuff going on but I did make it to LBL over the weekend.

Completed the 271km route 90 mins quicker than in 2014 even with the lack of training. Weather was horrible though, wet and windy. I was warm enough climbing but on the descents I was freezing. Not a great way to spend 11 hours!

Damn. Well done mate. I was meant to be going for the 160km route but had a nasty cold. Probably just as well I didn't go.

Yep probably for the best, couple of the guys I went with are now ill.

Was a truly horrible day weather wise and I wasn't dressed for it, had shorts on!

Great for core and useful for stretching some muscles which may not fully 'elongate' (my minds gone blank what the opposite of muscle contraction is called) in the normal riding position (hamstrings being one of the main ones). It helps with pedaling efficiency when stood climbing - if you're putting less effort into holding the position, you can concentrate more on smooth power when pedaling!

Great jacket, you'll love it! So very tempted to get myself one of the Light NoRain jerseys... :o

The exchange thing works well, although you do run the risk of them taking a while to restock (especially with brands like Sportful), or the line becoming EOL and them never getting any more. I generally have a look around other sites and look for reviews to get an idea of when the product was launched and if it's been superseded or not yet.

Loving the pub directions! Sounds like some of the routes around here - "Turn right at The Swan in Letton, Left at the Red Lion, over Dorstone hill into Dorstone until you see the Pandy Inn" :D

I don't have experience with the DynaWedge but the Aero Wedge (Medium) I have, the rear zip can be fiddly at the top as my Fizik Arione overhangs at the rear. This fit/fiddle/overhang obviously depends on your saddle!

The 0.98 litres listed for mine is more than enough for everything you listed (I have room for my multitude of toolage and 2 tubes) with some room to spare (expansion zip closed) so I would take Topeak's capacity with a pinch of salt.

Bitter cold wind this morning, almost wish I'd put my winter gloves in my bag! Headwind for me too which really taxed my legs as I went out with my mate after work last night. Great ride, headwinds out and lesser headwinds back. Split the ride out into 2 so we both did a stint in the strong wind, turned south and practiced my sprint (9th overall I'm happy with!) then we turned back towards town. Less winds but still felt like headwinds, both of us utterly drained at the end but considering the conditions that's the quickest I've done the loop, just with a different friend than normal!
