My Saddle is kinda far forward on the post... was thinking about getting a seatpost with less layback (and might as well Carbon at the same time). Am I likely to see any adverse differences or should it feel basically the same? (besides the carbon aspect)

Does anyone know what degree stem I need to get it parallel with the ground?

Shirley that depends on the geo of your bike head tube, if you know that then it's simple sums.

Edit: Didn't see it's been answered loads of time already :)

Is it? I've done several solo metrics, and I'll probably do quite a few more this year. Last year I rode to see the Tour of Britain and while there were other riders around at the bits where we were watching the race I was fundamentally on my own. That was 80 odd miles.

I am a lone wolf, though, in life in general as well as in riding, so maybe it's just me.

For me it is anyway. I get bored to tears after about 50mi on my own and motivation disappears. :(

Music in one ear for the win though.

I should probably do this, I'm that used to commuting without music that I forgot this is a viable idea!! I wouldn't actually mind cycling longer distances with music!

Otherwise I'm in this boat! 30 Miles + headwind can knock it out of me sometimes.

However, club is doing a hill session tonight, unsure whether to join them...

I used to put out some big rides, but nowadays 3 hours is generally my limit on the road. Can happily do more with headphones, such as South Downs on the MTB. This came about after last year in Majorca riding days in a row with no one to talk to.

Luckily know enough people locally to arrange rides with.

I'm quite happy to go off into the hills alone with my MTB + bivi bag and not see anybody or even any sign of civilisation for days :)

I just downloaded an iPhone app to do bike fits... it was like $4.99 so we'll see how useful it actually is

Much better to read/watch guides. Some of the best I found were on GCN!

The times I've done rough fits for my other half (and a friend) I've mostly used 2 measurements -
  • '88.3% of inseam for saddle to middle of BB' to get a rough idea of the saddle height after initially fitting from 'heel on pedal at 6 o'clock', this has worked better for me (personally) than '109% of inseam with pedal at 6 o'clock'. I'm guessing because it excludes the crankarm length.
  • I then use KOPS for saddle fore/aft position.
Anything more than that I'd say you need a professional bike fit. More for the measuring tools and experience rather than anything specific.

I quite liked some Breaks or Hard House when doing a fasted ride on the turbo. For other riding I tend to listen to Freeform (UK/FINRG) or modern UK Hardcore, usually because I don't get bored with it and have lots of sets to listen to. For more intense stuff I progress into Hardstyle, Gabber and dutch techno. Not as far as the extreme (Terrorcore) stuff, as 200+bpm is a little hard to match cadence to! :o

But I've always liked fast/hard music! ;)

I plan on doing lejog in the year I turn 40. I've already asked my parents to drive a support car for me, but otherwise I anticipate doing the ride solo.

Unless any of you reprobates want to join me for some or all of it ;)

Yeah, riding alone does get tiresome quite fast. Music in one ear for the win though.

My longest solo was about 80 miles iirc. I'd like to extend that to over an imperial sometime.

Didn't OMS do his 200 miler solo? :p

Yeah, always up for a group ride but I like riding alone too. Especially in summer, my favourite time to get up into the hills is 7-9pm ish when most people are having dinner and it's quiet, the sun is setting etc. Nice way to clear your head (and push out some massive watties of course).

A guy from work is doing LEJOG in September. It's going to be some mean feat considering he just got a road bike and started cycling regularish in March.

You think it'll take that long? :p

I absolutely battered it on the way home. Smashed it. Pushed hard all the way... Averaged 15.8mph and got no achievements. #singlespeedproblems

Now that's what I call a badass jersey:
