Road Cycling

I really want to build a winter bike... but every time I look for a frame, I start at metal and then I'm suddenly on carbon again ha

I just want something I can beat about on and not be afraid to leave it locked up outside, whereas I never leave my current bikes out.

Alloy disc bike? Hmmm

Typing with one hand so excuse typos/shortness...

Descending Oak Rd in Alderley...recent torrential rain put tons of gravel on the road. Wheels went out from under me at 28mph. Hoping bike is pwn'd enough I can replace the whole thing via insurance...

How much can you expect to pay for insurance on a £2.5k bike, per year, you cover accidental damage/write-offs?

Always wondered whether it was worth it or not.

Hope you heal quickly FT, bad news.

About £20pm though your postcode will cause this to vary.

I pay about £35pm for £6k's total cover (2 bikes) with £4.5k away from home. A decent set of carbon rims and a powermeter quickly boosts the replacement cost of your bike somewhat

That includes ample BikeBox & accessories cover, public liability, personal injury, competition cover, zero excess (over a certain value), worldwide cover etc.

I like Bikmo's approach. You just buy the value of the cover (total & away from home) so you're not insuring a specific bike, if you change very regularly it saves having to contact them to make regular policy changes and being subject to any premium fluctuations. You can specify items on your account and upload photo's for proof of ownership. Haven't had to claim yet but they seem well regarded here and were the most comprehensive and competitive I could find.

Sorry to hear that FT, hope you get better soon. You could have course do a Matt Hayman and turbo train with your arm rested on a ladder. He did that then won the Paris - Roubaix ;)

Good answer, thank you.

Good healing wishes FT. Shame it's pretty much written off your Autumn riding but I suppose it could have been worse - could have written off your summer riding - at least you've banked the summer.

I'm still finding my feet with my venture into road riding - I've been all MTB for the past couple of years so it's taking time to adjust, I'm forgetting to look out for drains/potholes because on the MTB drains and potholes don't really exist! I made myself laugh last ride when I faced a large pothole that I couldn't go around so I actually bunny hoped the blood thing, that's my MTB auto-pilot.

I will get better but I seem to range atm between completely average and reasonable decent. A fair few DH sections I know I could do a lot quicker - I backed off two of them due to traffic/walkers/dogs and an oncoming horsebox that wanted the whole road.

Longer climbs I think I don't pace properly - I seem to run out of steam 2/3rds up and I'm on empty and struggle. I need to work on that, and my stamina - I need more stamina.

I'm finding myself sliding forwards whilst pedalling towards the nose of the saddle - I've tried tilting it nose up a touch - makes no difference. Tried moving it forwards - still makes no difference. My reach feels ok, knee over pedal is just about spot on. Any ideas?

When you nail your indexing first time with 0 adjustment to the barrels you do start to wonder if you're in the afterlife!
Wanna come and do my FD? :p

Find I either get indexing pretty much first time or it's a long winded faff!
Just bought the Vortex from Bike24. Arrived yesterday.

It was 309 euro's on tuesday. ordered Tuesday night from Germany - arrived Friday morning 10am all for 6 euro delivery!! Most UK companies can't do that!
Awesome result, that's the SMART one yeah? Very interested to hear how you get on with it! :)
How do my wheels fill up with so much water!

2 and a bit hours in the rain on Friday. Back wheel has just been slowly draining water all day. Chain was rusted from being sat, it all looked a bit sad!
Not quite sure why you always have issues with your wheels filling with water when nobody here seems to have the same issue?! I'd assume the UK was wetter than Bathurst!? Or is it always the same wheelset?
splitting the chain seems excessive tbh - I can always get my groupset super-clean with just degreaser and fairy without taking anything off.
Fairy liquid contains salt which will rust, be careful when using household cleaning products & be very careful about removing it all! To be honest if you can't get anything off with neat degreaser then not much else is going to shift it...!

Any excuse!

Hope you heal up well & soon mate, fall sounds brutal! Hope bike is either of the two extremes (totalled/mostly ok). At least you did it this time of year! Take things easy & sending healing thoughts your way :)

KNOPS is a guide rather than the holy grail, as far as I'm aware as pedaling mechanics and physiology differs in individuals.

Is your stem particularly long or are you over reached? Are you sliding all the time or just during climbs/flat?

FD is easy, the rear is always the one that takes a bit of fiddling.

Get Well Soon FT.
