Yeah the AI is ****. Nothing about it is AI. Feels like I could write it with about 3 if/else statements.

“Impressive ride with high power and elevation gain, exceeding your 30 day average. Consistent training is paying off with strong performances across all power zones”

Vague and not helpful at all. Can you turn it off?

Is this sarcastic? Hard to tell.

I've had to go and buy some Factor 50 if that's an indication.

Today's been fun, up Els Angels and Masnou (labelled 'The Wall' today). I ride with Group 2, but with a couple of miles to go up Els Angels I found myself on the wheel of two of the Group 1 riders. Clung to their wheel and then outsprinted them at the top  (288W for 31 mins, then dropped 960W for 15 seconds at the end of that. I've done better power for 15s before, but not after a Cat 2 PB climb  )
Els is lovely from Girona side ;) not so much from the other side hahah easier to cycle down that way :D

is that an organise trip ?

Agreed. Worthless comments really. Doesn’t really take in to account recent activities so waste of time really.

The thing about strava that annoys me the most is its "fitness score". I could be Tadej Pogacar and if I didn't log many outdoor rides with strava it would say "hmm, you're putting out 500w for an hour but your fitness isn't that good".

I quite like it. Just a basic translation of what the numbers are saying, I find it quite helpful and inoffensive but yeah, it's hardly groundbreaking AI tech. Whoop has been doing it for years.
You can turn it off within the app, or rather opt out of the beta, press the text and several options come up including the ability to give feedback on each of the comments.

Bit like Garmin in that respect. Put in hours and hours of training every week. Then do an event and really push yourself only to be told your training is Unproductive

Ordered some new rubbers. Had been debating what to do to give myself some more off road option. Either make my MTB less off roady for the road sections or make my road bike more off roady. Decided to go for the latter and ordered some Hutchinson Caracal 40mm tyres. Sounds like they're still pretty fast and if it slows me down by 0.5-1mph/hr i'm not going to be too fussed.
I do have a spare wheelset, so if they annoy me too much i might finally get some rotors/cassette for a complete road/off road wheelset.

My mtb is still pretty miserable for road use, and i use it for popping to the shops with normal trainers etc, but i might get an electric motor for that. Would give me more speed and make life easier for those duties.

Just got back from Mallorca where I managed to get out for 5 days out of the 9.

First day we went out to the lighthouse on a 50km loop. Great ride and nice views but the traffic was frustrating on the way back. Got stuck behind so many cars. It was crazy on the way out as well. There was a good km of static cars just sitting, waiting to get to the top. People are idiots. Views were nice enough but it was nothing special in the grand scheme of Mallorca in general.

Next day we went out for a bit of a longer one at 80km. Saw some other parts of the island and got to see the massive difference between the flats and the hills. The flats truly are flat. Pancake flat.

Day off and then a bigger ride. Wanted to do Sa Colobra and pretty much all the routes going out that way were over 100km so I ended up doing a 110km with a little over 2000m of climbing. Longest day I have spent in the saddle but it was a cracker. Sa Colobra had the same issues as the lighthouse. Stuck behind cars for most of the way down and it had rained about 30 minutes before I started descending into it. Already had a lot of climbing in my legs before Sa Colobra and it was hard work getting up it but I refused to stop. One bloke stopped about 300m from the end of it and I didn't massively blame him. The headwind that day was brutal at times. Sometimes gusty and sometimes just relentless. The best part of the day was the 20km or more back from the top down to where we were staying in Port de Polenca. Absolutely amazing descent. Basically no traffic getting in the way and I was railing all the turns. Amazing feeling flying around the big sweeping turns.

Took a couple of days off and then we did a fast afternoon ride of about 40km. Not entirely intentional as it was supposed to be just a chill one before another big day out but it was very flat so we ended up averaging nearly 33kph. Wind was quite high but route was only 120m of elevation so very flat and fast. Bit foolish to hit the legs so hard before the next day but hey ho. Sometimes its fun to go fast.

Final day out and we decided it was going to be a longer one. 135km with 2500m climbing. Was all going Ok until a fairly innocuous climb. 500m at 5% average. I was just suffering by the top. Stopped at the cafe at the top and the woman I was with suggested a snickers just as we were about to head off. I said I would be fine but it was a great idea. Turns out liquid calories only get me so far after that I was fine. Knocked out the 900m climb far easier and felt great towards the end of the ride. Did the same descent at the end as the previous big day and it was every bit as good the second time.

So what have I learned? Mallorca is a cycling mecca for a reason. Roads are generally excellent and fast rolling. Roads are either quiet or have space for cyclists and drivers to never bother each other. On some of the climbs you hold them up for 20s but its so quiet that they are happy to wait and I think we only had perhaps 1 moderately poor pass all trip. It was astonishing how many cyclists were there as well. Millions of us.

I am very glad I took my own bike. Saved me loads of money, was super easy to travel with (apart from getting it to the airport and back this end) and there is something nice about sharing these trips with your own bike.

Finally, I need to work on my fuelling. I usually take quite a lot of calories through a carb drink when I'm riding at home but I didn't take any with me. I had some gels but I think I need to work out some solid foods to take with me in future.

Will be back there again for sure. Great for a family holiday with little ones and great for cycling.

Crossing thread streams a little but on the subject of the new hyper smart Strava AI, I just did a Zwift race, finished fourth. I edited the auto Strava sub title to say 0.83 seconds behind the winner.
Strava AI: :D

what tyres are you guys running ? I can fit 28mm on my frameset going by the manufacturer and want something with tan walls as it'd look good.

decent puncture protection is key over weight etc.

On GP5000 S TR as well. Like them, but also not without their own faults - quite soft. Very expensive. Tan wall is more brown/deep bronze (but I do like it - see below). Tougher than Pirelli P-Zero, feel very similar to ride (good). Similar to Hutchingson Fusion 5, but feel much better than them and more grip.

Running Vittoria Rubino Pro on my winter/commuter/everything bike. Half the price and ok, maybe not half the tyre. Still not without their faults (soft but feel pretty wooden too, but do need higher pressures). Would go back to my favoured (Specialized Roubaix) if they trimmed the price back/offered more sizes/sorted inventory issues. They used to be a very good budget winter option (£31 for a tubeless tyre!).

haha he even got them from Bespoke LOL ..nice bikes there...10mins away from me

he was looking on Lightweights today haha

he doesnt like Pinio..and cheaper to change to same frame manufacturer for BBs and cranks after....
Haha, I was more talking about the 'money no object' crowd who seem to buy them due to the name... Guess they're all riding V4RS now?! Although the S-Works and Madone always seemed to price point towards them so I've always really considered all the top brands are equally to blame for the stupidly high prices.

To use the SL8 as an example, I know they're different carbon layups (FACT 12r vs FACT 10r) so the S-W is 685g and the regular SL8 is 780g for the base frame. 95g difference. Is that really worth the increase. Force eTap is £1000 cheaper than Red eTap, so an SL8 Pro 2023 with Force is £8000 and an S-W SL8 2023 is £12,000 so the frame costs approx 2-3000 more... To shave off 95g (caveat - there might be some subtle differences to finishing kit which make more of a difference - but they use the same fork).

A Greggs regular jam doughnut is 76g.

I've had to go and buy some Factor 50 if that's an indication.
Good to hear! Had some ok weather here this weekend... Cue me taking the good bike for probably it's last ride of 2024 and riding through probably a dozen flooded roads. I was really on the wrong bike! We had loads more rain overnight than I realised and roads also not cleared from the weeks of rain and localised flooding earlier in the week. At least I got to try out another new toy...

Whoop has been doing it for years.
Nope, the Whoop AI drive 'Outlook Coach' has only been there since November (V2.0 Beta) and only does real 'AI' things if you ask it a question. The 'automatic' dayly recommendations really only does similar to Stravas as mentioned above - it looks at your trends, then tells you how you're doing against them. Not really 'real' AI. Mine for example today has:
  • Reaching Optimal Strain - "You've hit the optimal Strain range. Keep moving towards your target of 10.7 for even more fitness goals"
    • I've done nothing strenuous today today, commuted to work (which I do 200+ days a year) and apart from some rushing around earlier have now spent nearly 4 hours sat at my desk.
  • Today's Recommendation - "Your optimum Strain range is 8.7 - 12.7, with a target of 10.7. Consider a nap, recovery activities, or an earlier bedtime to make up for not having enough sleep.
    • I had 6 hours 25mins sleep last night, that's average or slightly above average. Strain range is set by Whoop. I'll be smashing a Zwift Ladder race later so will be well over target - which I will be nearly every Tuesday as that's the evening I ride ZRL.
  • Recovering from Strain - Your body has recovered from overreaching yesterday. Strain pushes fitness gains but requires periods of resovery to be most effective.
    • Yesterday I didn't even ride. Did have quite a tiring day doing DIY and clearing/sorting the garage. But my strain for the day was 13.6 which is nothing compared to a day I race/ride. Most of those I'm towards 20 strain (max is 21 on Whoop - I get near it quite regularly, was at 19.7 on Saturday with riding 3.5 hours outside).
Will be back there again for sure. Great for a family holiday with little ones and great for cycling.
Amazing trip - especially with the family in tow... I've always tried to do it, but when we price it up Mallorca just ends up so ridiculously expensive for something 'meh' when we can get much better with more hotel facilities (waterparks, pools) for same/cheaper elsewhere - usually heading to one of the Greek islands (Rhodes, Kos, Crete) or Cyprus. One day I'll be able to do it!

There's a Cycling trip/holiday thread somewhere on here, drop the hotel/resort details in there (& re-post your experience) if you can and will take a look :D

Yeah, exactly what I said. It's just looking for trends and patterns then creating phrases around them. It's then easily manipulated by editing your activity as per my screenshot above, it's far from intelligent. Whoop has been doing this for years. :)

Looking for a reasonably priced pair of photochromic glasses to get my Mrs. She has the standard Oakley Sutro but they look a bit big on her. She's had kids ones in the past but they look a bit daft too :D
Been riding at 5:30am and its still pretty dark this time of year and she struggles with her eyes watering. Any recommendations? I don't want to spend Oakley money as come December it'll be light at that time in the morning.

Colour wise she likes pink (obvs), her bike is a purply / dark blue and she loves the Bianchi green type colours.

Something like this maybe but they look big. https://www.bikebug.com/magicshine-windbreaker-photochromic-lens-lake-placid-glasses/

I don't know how you are set financially but when I have this sort of decision I usually either go to the shop to look at them and try them on or I order a bunch and return what I don't like/doesn't fit.

On an unrelated note, does anyone here find that their legs just permanently ache. Always in the morning. I have noticed this for quite a while not but just largely ignored it but the week in Mallorca and coming home has really brought home how annoying it is.

I cycled over 400km over 8 days in Mallorca with a lot of elevation. I didn't sleep that well because of the boys either so its not like I was chilling and relaxing on holiday. I didn't have any of the same issues. I could feel my legs the day after the big rides but nowhere near as much as this morning after only doing a 1.5 hour Z2 ride on the trainer.

I don't know if its a combination of going to bed so soon after these sessions are finished or if its because I sit on my bum all day working on a computer. Does anyone else have these issues with a sedentary job? I think that simply the fact I was always on the go on holiday and my rides were finishing late afternoon at the latest means that my recovery is so much better.

Fun fact though, the Z2 ride last night was 10bpm lower on the old HR than normal. Going from a usual 7-8 hour week to a 15 hour week apparently is good for you!
