Road Cycling

yeah, the bolt is hex, no issues, but now i need to remove the actual chainset from the "rod" and that is square shaped, like here:

I've checked the weather for tomorrow. Its not great in the morning.

You probably fared worse than me this morning! It was raining around seven as I was getting ready but stopped in time for my ride in. Quite nice in the end! I had a bit of a chase going with a guy I've seen a few times who must work somewhere nearby - I followed him all the way from Kenyon Lane to the turning for Glover Road, after the m62 bridge. He overtook me and then I followed him fairly closely for those few miles. It was the usual single speed problem - he'd be closer to dropping me on the flats and I could have taken him any time we hit an incline! I didn't like to follow too closely as he only had back mudguards in spite of being on a Dolan Preffisio which I know has proper mounts. I would have passed him going over the m62 if there hadn't been cars passing us at the time. He left me on Glover Road as he went round the outside of the queue of cars but I prefer to wait in line as it's pretty narrow down there.

They've finally turned the radiators on in the drying room, so it's cooking in there. Pretty full of gear as well - quite a lot of people riding in spite of Autumn.

Just bought another bike :o I don't think many people here will think it is a particularly wise choice but I've given it a lot of thought and decided to take the plunge today.
<snip>
So... I bought a cheap gravel bike. Thoughts behind this were that I could run the bigger tyres that I want for winter and also it opens up a new type of riding for me.
I know you've been thinking about things long before I even took the plunge mate! If you have multiple riding routes it also opens up then it was never going to be a 'bad' choice! Riding with wider tyres was one of the huge plus points for me, especially as I could run them with full mudguards. As for hydros, I love mine but equally haven't tried cables, the stopping power really puts the grip of your tyres at the fore, rather than the limits of your pads. If you can lock the wheel, yet easily modulate the braking then they're more than adequate.
Today, multiple rings but a man didn't notice me until I was right alongside where he turned and muttered something along the lines that I shouldn't be riding. Normally I'd just ignore this but I'm having some issues at the moment and I reacted. I asked him why he thought that, considering it's a footpath/cycleway but he was having none of it, told me that I shouldn't be riding there, I should be on the road.
Lol! Just no pleasing some people mate, don't stress about it - he'll be one of the people who happily sits in traffic polluting the world and wasting money while getting obese before dying of heart disease. All the time he'll be angry at everything!
Offs are never good. Glad you don't have anything too serious though.
Thanks mate, means a lot considering yours! I'm lucky, after seeing some of the damage - The scuff on my gilet is right where my collarbone is, although I have no grazes/rash on it, my shoulder does.

Considering my right thigh/hip seem to have taken the impact (most deep bruising) the rash on my left elbow and left knuckles are the worst for pain. The eye doesn't really hurt (yet).

need to remove FSA tempo (once I unscrew the bolt, the inner shape is squared) and replacing it with Shimano 105.
Removing the bottom bracket is going to be the hard part, without knowing what BB it is, you won't know what tools or correct procedure...

Crank pullers work well, even cheap ones. I got one in my cheapy planetx tool set which I think I paid £18 for 2 years ago. Most of the other parts of it I've used through the years and have only needed to replace a few bits I used regularly as they bent/broke/wore out (chain tool, tyre levers, cone spanners & spoke tool). Well worth it if you're only an occasional mechanic and don't already own much of it. The chain whip mine came with actually has an external BB spanner/remover instead of a standard spanner on the end.

Eugh rain.

I forgot what it was like! Got soaked yesterday on my ride, wearing just a baselayer and summer jersey. Luckily I was going hard so didn't really feel it. Then again this morning on the commute. Bloody winter! :(

Wheels dispatched, woot. Ordered a few bits I'd managed to completely forget I needed yesterday too (headset, BB, band-on-converter for my FD). New bike work stand has now been built too and this afternoon I'm off to the nurse to hopefully have my stitches snipped and have the last of my dressings off.

So close to being able to ride properly again...

...so I will celebrate with an FTP test on the turbo

Bloody hell Roads... leave you alone for 5 mins and you face plant the deck! Glad to hear you're OK though. Least it's not one arm territory like FT :p bad luck about the damaged gear though, always a pain and as we know stuff isn't cheap!

Good effort regardless though. Nice ride!

I was shattered this morning, my son has been being a pain (he's coming up 12 and may as well be 15 and a full on **** bag teenager) so didn't sleep well. Had a weekend off as my legs were feeling last couple of weeks. Didn't want to get up this morning, so cancelled my early meeting and slogged around the house. Then decided I should actually get to the office and got out on the bike.
Managed a 23.5k ride in to work, just putting off the inevitable of being here in the office and my to do list, but it was nice to be out. Will try and get a 20k in tonight and then some intervals to wake me up later. New week, new goals.

Was more of a shoulder-hip-plant-rub-head-into-floor, than a face plant Ross! ;)

FT: How is it feeling and how is the mobility?

Anyone with any tips on bar tape? Quite like the 'Specialized Roubaix' tape my Diverge came with - comfortable, quite 'foamy' and doesn't soak up water too much... The 'Fizik Performance' I fitted to my Giant was terrible for soaking up water and quite a 'firm' fabric type tape...

My favourite bartape is the supercaz stuff over the lizard skins dsp.

Pretty soft and comfortable and easy to wrap. Doesn't soak up water like cork or felt tape.

I have some cheap Deda stuff I put on the TT bike, I wouldn't buy it again, once it's on it's on, trying to peel it off causes the tape to rip (I used the removal sticker stuff on the rear).

I can almost get my arm pointing directly upwards if I spider it up the wall but I can't lift it more than about shoulder height by itself (I'm probably not meant to even be trying that anyhow :p).

Will be keeping an eye on bar tape recommendations. Shame the Fizik stuff isn't great as it would be nice to complete my Fizik-fanboi look with bar tape :p

I use the £3 stuff from Planet X :p

I don't like huge fat foamy tape. My hands are pretty small so I don't want to feel like I'm holding onto two bog rolls on the bars.

Ouch, Roady!

Hope you have a speedy comfortable recovery. I fell off at about 30mph down hill via chicken. Did get lots of grit, and manure in my wounds. Was not fun.

I was strongly considering the Lifeline stuff tbh but uv said it was cack when he tried it.

I have fairly large hands so a bit of cushion on the tape is always appreciated... :)

? :D

Good to hear you've got that much mobility already, much pain still or is it just the stiff/lack of strength feeling?

That's exactly why I got some... It was also quite cheap! More expensive Fizik stuff might be better of course! :o

Only Supercaz stuff I see is quite pricey here, more expensive than most anyway. What didn't you like about the DSP? To be honest I'm probably going to get the Specialised Roubaix tape for this price. Cheaper than most of the others I've looked at and I know I like it. Also only have to wrap 1 side then... (and keep 1 wrap for future use!) ;)

I like foamy... How was that white Cinelli stuff I sent you afterwards?

Lol 'via chicken' made me spit out my coffee! :p

Thanks mate, thankfully this time of year it was so cool everything grazed was covered so I had minimal grit/dirt in my wounds!

Ross, did I see in one of your Strava pictures you had some of the yellow Shimano overshoes? How are they for thickness/waterproofing?
