Road Cycling

Well thats it,its official, Ive just been elected as the secretary of the North Cheshire Clarion at the AGM! Pretty excited to become part of this as we are one of the bigger clubs of the north west, ranked pretty highly in racing of the north west, behind only Manc Wheelers and Lakes Cycling club (and various dedicated racing teams) we are 7th best in north west, 3rd if you dont count the dedicated racing teams. Always well represented across ALL age ranges at all manner of events in the nw. We also organise 2 audaxes per year and have just run the Stadt Moers CX event with over 300 riders attending.

Looking forwards to getting involved, and a new website is immenent too which I think is a cut above 99% of all cycle clubs websites, all from the voluntary efforts of one member.

Awesome news. The ride I did with NCC was well organised and filled with nice, friendly types. Whenever I've ran into members they've always been great too.

If I lived closer I'd definitely ride regularly with you guys - though maybe not now they've started letting the riff-raff into the exec :p

I saw in the comments people talking about that 560g titanium lock but there doesn't seem to be any decent info on it around. Based on what I've seen I'm tempted to dismiss it too.

It's a shame really. As you say, for decent protection you're looking at a 2kg mini D lock.

The costs of some of these locks is crazy, you're better buying 2 (or even 3!) cheaper silver/gold kryptonite's, manning up over the extra weight when you've got to leave your bike and just making your bike really unattractive to opportunistic thieves. And getting a cheap commuter/pub bike.

I suppose if you already carry 100kg of tools in your saddle bag then adding on an extra 10kg of locks isn't really that big a deal...

I rode for years with headphones in both ears and never had issues - if anything it made me use my eyes to check around me more.

Now I just ride with a headphone in my left ear only. Seems to work quite well without really interfering with your ability to hear traffic from the direction that matters most.

So much awesome bike porn on this page.

My cycling has taken a further hit as I've sort of decided to run the Manchester marathon next year so I'm like..running a lot. Sickening.

Hopefully I can keep on top of cycling well enough to not become super slow

just because i think disc brakes are a pointless sell-more-stuff exercise on a road bike doesnt mean i dont think hornetstinger is a bit of a flat-earther. They're brilliant on an MTB, and the deore M615 is very well regarded....

my 6ft 6inch 20 stone mate disagrees with me on the pointlessness of road discs thouhgh

Definitely part of your post that I agree with there :)

I commute on a £600 Boardman with 2x9 Sora, Spyre mech discs - absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Only slight concern is pad wear - I think I'm half way through my fronts and I've only done 600 miles on the set.

Are the pads organics? I'd go semi-metallic for your next set. I find sintered are too rubbish/annoying.

Lovely, except £1800 minimum for the cheapest. :(

I don't think at 45 yrs of age there's much point in me spending £1800 on a bike - I wouldn't get any extra out of a £1800 bike than a £1000 bike, hence next bike budget will be just that - £1,000 and not a penny more.

I'd argue that age doesn't matter in the slightest. Nothing wrong with having a budget in mind of course.
