Road Cycling

To answer some of the queries around my riding, it's mainly relatively flat with a few rolling hills and the odd few trips towards the peaks for some steeper stuff.

I should have probably included more info in my original post / query.

I've opted for the 40mm visions. We'll see how they go and if anyone is interested in how they perform, let me know.

Since day one'th of cycling I've been getting pretty hung up over average speed and trying to keep it up etc. but why do we when FTHR and or FTP is a much better indicator of how you're riding across most rides?

Or have I reached the point where I'm starting to take my training a little more seriously and noticing better numbers to stare at my stem for? :p

I averaged 17.5mph coming in this morning, which I think is the fastest I've managed yet, and yes - it felt good :D

It'll probably be down to like 11.4mph by the time strava gets its hands on it, mind you.

Edit: Yep, strava says 17.1mph... Cheers.

So I did make it to the NFTO final closing down sale last Saturday... Changed the NFTO Black jersey I had in Large for a Medium. Grabbed another 2 Team Aero jerseys (£10 each! Castelli!), a couple of sets of Shimano brake pads (few quid each) and some other bits. The main 'bargain' I had was the NFTO Rain jackets... A week ago I picked one up reduced down to £90 (from £180!). Well they were selling them at £20 each! I picked up another as couldn't miss out on that! I'll keep one for future. The first I bought I wore on Sunday in around 4.5 hours of rain/drizzle and it coped brilliantly. Probably should've bought a bundle of them (to flog to you guys) but I'd spent far too much money already! ;)
Also good job on the sportive, looks like hard work!
It was brutal in those conditions! Although I felt good so with less dodgy climbs, slightly less elevation and no rain I know I'm now capable of 100 mile sportives.

My legs didn't cramp up, I had one quad twinge on one of the last climbs but stopped rather than push on which I think stopped me from cramping. As I didn't cramp up and had built up my weekly mileage previously (so the Sportive didn't take me much over my normal weekly amount) my legs actually felt ok the day after. I'm well recovered now and want to get home tonight to clean the bike and head out for an easy loop!

I've ordered one. Based on my experiences with the other I'm not expecting much but will let you know how it is. To be honest not sure if it would fit a virb... maybe just about enough room to squeeze it underneath.
Will be good to hear how you find it!

Is the virb pretty much the go to choice for on bike camera-ing? Any alternatives? It's awfully expensive is all...
Battery life is pretty good 2h30m-3 hours per battery (yes replaceable!) in 720p60. I find 1080p30 too slow a framerate when you slow a video down. Video quality isn't up there with GoPro but if you factor in price it's not bad at all. It's also a little bulky compared to a GoPro.
As mentioned the Elite isn't worth it.

I've used my VIRB to record probably ~4 hours of footage (2 hours of commuting & 2 hours of leisure) per week (a very conservative estimate) since March 2014 when I got it (got knocked off December 2013). I tend to get 3 hours out of a charge and around 10 days of 720p (ECO mode) on a 32gb card. I'm not sure if any of the GoPro's have longer battery life than the VIRB, when I got mine they didn't (grudas?).

I've picked up an external charger & spare battery and have noticed no decrease in battery life on the original battery. I did buy a cheap £18 battery from China but the capacity was much poorer than the Garmin branded ones. I lost it at some point from my saddlebag after a tyre change & I wouldn't recommend cheap batteries for it. VIRB accessories tend to be cheapest from Evans' and I think they're the only reputable place I could find that stocked the batteries.

The VIRB itself is heavy & using the Superstar combo mount (with my 810) I see lots of vibration in my footage, making it blurry on rough roads. The newer GoPro session would be much lighter than the VIRB and probably not suffer as much. GoPro's have better sound than the VIRB gen1 too (hear the newer one is better) which suffers from wind and road noise (mine picks up everything from the headset & hardly anything from ambient).

I'm happy with mine, even with it's limitations and slightly lesser quality video than the GoPro's. For the trade off you get a waterproof unit out of the box, with increased battery life and much cheaper (& so are the accessories).

Probably the latter! Although FTHR and FTP are more training effort 'guides' and a measurement of effort, rather than average speed which can be vastly affected by weather conditions, traffic, roads and routes! ;)

OMG fast! OMG fast! OMG slow! ;)

This has been an awesome summer so far.

Best I can remember!

 No, it's been absolute crap. There has not been a single baking hot day, where it I still hot in the evenings for a longer cycle in the sun. Exactly the same as last year. Although last year was probably slightly better.

I remember one week a few years ago where I got out most days because the weather was just that superb. Those days are long gone.

Woo 11 speed yeah...

When various parts turn up I should be 11 speed all over!

Ordered Force 22 derailleurs after my 10 speed red grenaded and the used one I fitted to get me by isn't the greatest condition, it's impossible to tune perfectly which reading up happens as they start to wear out.

A Novatec 11 speed hub which is supposedly the same as the power tap one but 1/3rd of the cost.

Force 22 Cx right hand shifter, then force 22 cassette & red 22 chain. New brake & gear cables and I should be in business.

I don't need any spacers on the hub now do I? 11 speed is no spacers and SRAM 9/10 is 1.85mm I think.

I already have an 11 speed cassette which came with my Kickr and I can just swap the one from training to race wheels if I need to as I won't use them that much.

My arm warmers (yes, arm warmers in July, rock on British summer) are reaching the end of their life. They're only cheap ones from aldi or something and the elastic at the top is going. I've got some torm ones for Sunday best, but I'd like some for commuting duty. Are castelli nanoflex my best bet?

Sportful No Rain slightly cheaper, but essentially the same and the branding is much smaller. I use them as my best alongside my Rapha ones.

Streaming ahead with your 'upgrade'! To be honest I'm jealous you've managed to do it so seamlessly, or at least not moaned here with the problems?! Spreading the cost too! :D

I bought Sportful NoRain and didn't like them, just a little too tight and my arms roasted in them. When it was cold enough for them I wasn't really wearing short sleeve 'summer' jerseys anyway (although with better gilet I probably would've). When I bought Castelli Nanoflex knee warmers I went for some DHB Regulate arm warmers so I had some thinner ones I could use instead of buying long sleeve jerseys. They work very well. Bought a medium and wear them hellova lot more than I thought I would!

I've just replaced my years old Btwin ones with a set of DHB Rain Defence, yet to put them through their paces properly but they seem comfortable and are well reviewed.

I usually combine the no rains with a compression baselayer in the winter, I very rarely wear a full on long sleeve jersey. Which is why I have so many Raphas :D

Grim down here today, glad I wasn't riding, although did buy a new TV which means I now have a spare 42" plasma for winter turbo sessions :D should hopefully help heat the garage up a bit too.

couple of interesting jobs on my workbench at the mo

Rebuilding a 10 speed campag shifter that's snapped its index springs, like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OocYpHXJ3Y - the index springs are the two that appear at 3:20.

and a scirocco rear wheel, the freehub is damaged and making a growling noise. Had a spare on the shelf so i fitted it up but the bearings on it are rusted solid (it's mint otherwise, even the grease is clean)

tapped the bearings out of it this morning and ordered replacements. The freehub is noted as a "replace" job, but they came out so easily and are so cheap....

You find they stay up ok over a sleeved base? I've gone a similar route... Short sleeved & warmers, the only long sleeve jerseys I have tend to be roubaix/windproof types for winter wear. Although I really should get a roubaix gilet, as there are times a full roubaix long sleeve is too much!

Any advice where to source various bearings from? I'm after quality rather than any fancy branding & not worried about importing/waiting.

I've got some to replace in an old Roval shell (unbranded DT Swiss 240). Most of my googling brings me back to DT's part number (and DT prices), I probably need to remove all the bearings from it and order them from the actual numbers on the bearings? I don't want to get stung buying poorly made bearings from china (any brands to use/avoid?). Also need a source a spare 'RW Spacer' (Aluminium bushing - DT HCDXXX00S1077S) after I crushed mine a little using it as a drift (whoops!) :o:rolleyes:;)

Also guys, any tips on a 'workbench' type affair for my new garage? What does everyone doing home maintenance use? I didn't have the space previously so have various toolboxes and bike stands. For anything requiring holding/fixing I struggled with various clamps and a small/cheap portable B&D 'saw bench'. I'll soon have space for a full/substantial workbench and want a good solid vice on it (which I'll use for other things as well as cycling).

unless they are manufacturer specific they usually have the bearing code marked somewhere on them

Sciroccos for example, the front wheel uses 2 6001 2RS, the rear uses the same, and the freehub is 6901 2RS

the number is the size and the 2RS means it's rubber sealed on both sides. you specifically dont want C3 clearance, that's for very high speed stuff and feels a bit loose from the off

get on ebay and look for SKF or FAG branded stuff, Bit more expensive but you asked for quality.... German, and the Germans are the kind of people you want making your bearings

a quick look http://www.wheelbuilder.com/dt-swiss-240s-road-rear-hub.html suggests a rear 240s requires 2x 6802 and 2x 6902.

Yep, the compression are bloody tight though, so it's just like sitting on the skin.
