Speaking of this I decided this morning that I might need to graduate from 50x34. Spinning at 35mph on the flat using the car ahead as a target in 50-11 and couldn't really get any more speed out without crazy fast spinning.

My Diverge is on 52/36 and an 11-32 cassette. My Defy is a 50/34 on an 11-32 again and I do spin it out more. I've done a 25-30% climb in 36*32 and hardly noticed any difference to 34*32.

I still spin out 52*11 descending, but not on the flat. I would spin out 50*11 very occasionally on the flat/gradual downhill chasing on group rides/sprinting, but I don't find myself in 52*11 doing the same thing.

I spin out 50*11 quite regularly on the turbo.
 
52-36 is perfect with an 11-28, for those occasions where you're spinning out a 50 I'm sure you can count them on the palm of your hand. Spun out the 53 on some of the courses round here when TTing but few and far between and you're usually better off just tucking in and saving your energy.

It's responses like this, along with your lack of consideration of some of our descriptions and explanations which lead me to think you're trolling in here.

Apologies if not - please read back and understand our responses. If you don't understand them, then please say so, otherwise it seems as if you're asking questions you don't fully understand, regardless of the responses you're going to receive.

Basically - there's much more than 'leg power' which governs 'how fast you go'.

How can it be same effort on a mtb vs a road bike to go at same speed?

You work harder and obtain more effort in a mtb vs a road bike at same speed.

Because you are constantly working harder then a road cyclist traveling identical speed, you become stronger as you are pushing say for example 200w longer duration vs 150w on a roadie on both cyclist going same speed.

In regards to the 100m sprinters, they do train with weights etc! why? To increase power and strength then just practising on there shorts only all day.

200w on a road bike is say 20mph for easy maths. 200w on a mountain bike is 15mph. You'd need to be putting out about 275W to hit 20mph on a mountain bike, which we haven't denied. But then why not just ride at 275w on the road bike to go 24mph?

(numbers are made up for sake of this conversation.

It was you that said that someone training on a heavy mtb then switching to a light road bike will be faster than someone riding a light roadie all the time... Which of bourse is wrong as that only works if the person is disproportionately fast on the mtb anyway ie they are more powerful full stop. If person A can do 20mph on a mtb while person B can do 20mph on a roadie then obviously person A will be faster when they switch if the bike factor is equalised. That's physics. Riding the mtb isn't making them faster unless they're training harder anyway or are stronger anyway.

You're right with the statement if someone is pushing for the same speed on a road bike vs mountain bike, say 20mph, and they then change to a road bike with similar effort they'll be faster but it's nothing to do with the bike really - they've just been working at a higher wattage.

That individual could just train at a higher wattage on ANY bike it doesn't matter really which they're on.

E.g. someone could train on the mountain bike over winter at 200W and go at 15mph. Someone could train on the road bike at 200W and go 20mph. Oh wait but the mountain biker makes the effort to go at a faster speed to match the road bike. Well then they're putting our 250W, hence a greater effort - not the bike. The person on the road bike could just train at 250W for a similar training effect.

Not very much wind out there today. Had a great 70 miler this morning to make the most of it!
Not strong, but cool wind here today, overcast this morning with some sun at lunch. Still feeling cooler than earlier. Next few days see the lower temperatures return... It was nice while it lasted! :D

Jealous. Today (and yesterday) would've been good riding days around here. Bet it's not the same in a weeks time when I'm off work! :D:(

How's this - guy in my office started working here before I was born (1980 - I'm no spring chicken!)... Our 'handyman' has worked for the company since 1946, so must be at least 72! He's still on his feet most the day, up & down stepladders etc :o

Used to be a cyclist! :D
