Road Cycling

Woke up this morning to frost & ice & thought....sod it I'm taking the car :(

Seem to be falling out of love with cycling at the moment, just no desire to get out on the bike.

You ride to and from work pretty much everyday. If I did that all through Winter I'm fairly sure my motivation would disappear too.

Put my head scarf and cap on this morning and shot out the door on my bike. Cycled all the way to work, went to take my helmet off....oh..!! Completely forgot to wear my helmet. Felt naked and unsafe cycling home and felt like I was getting scowls from other cyclists! D'oh!

I rode for nearly 3 years without helmet.. through london :o I did get one after trying like 10 and finding one that felt alright, now on the 2nd one and I got used to it. It does feel weird riding without one, I agree.

I do.. my motivation is the same tbf, ice/cold etc is a pain but summer sticky weather in congested city like london is no fun either, you get back and feel DIRTY.

Can you take different routes to work?

My commute is 13 miles if I take the easiest and most direct route, but as you say, I get so fed up with the same roads I often take different routes just to mix things up.

It's looking like it'll be even colder tomorrow morning too :(

Much of this year is motivation, also the shorter daylight hours really mean that riding outside of commuting (if you work normal office hours) requires even more motivation to go out in the dark. I hardly ride outside of the weekend/commuting/turbo this time of year. Setting goals is a good way, I've set a Strava target of 80 miles a week over winter (100 miles the rest of the time) and it can be good motivation to get that extra bit of riding done, or slightly extended route, just to go over the target. I do 50 miles a week just commuting, so to fit in 2*20 mile turbo sessions or a 30 mile group ride on the weekend (with 5 miles each way to town & back) to easily 'make it', is good motivation.
Is anyone else having real issue with things connecting to their Garmin unit lately?
Yup, but mine was my 810 eventually giving up totally on Bluetooth. Any kind of BT connection causing it to freeze! Have you done the soft-reset (hold down power & start/stop), that should scan again for sensors?
I'm moving away from Garmin now and running an ELEMNT as a replacement. 3rd week of running both and I think I'm going to ditch carrying the 810 next week. Really really happy with the ELEMNT! :D
In other news, one of my colleagues is doing Slimming World, so we decided to count how many "syns" I get through in a day in cakes, biscuits, etc. We got to 60odd. Apparently most adults should have 15 at most. #winning
Hahaha, put it into perspective by matching his/her weight loss while still having your 'sins'! Although the amount you ride I bet you've not much excess to lose!

Also, 60 'sins'. Impressive!:o
That's why you should have full length mudguards. I hardly ever wash the bike but it stays clean for 2 months.
Same, although it tends to be the group rides which gets my bike the most dirty - too much filth thrown up by others not running guards! Grr!
i do this a couple of times at the start of skull cap season, because i put the cap on when i'm getting dressed and the helmet when i'm leaving, i miss the helmet because i can already feel something on my head.
I've never forgotten my helmet but part of my 'routine' is leaving my riding glasses & a cap in my helmet in the cupboard, so even if I forgot the helmet I'd realise I hadn't got eye protection (wear it all weathers) fairly swiftly!

2015 for the year:
Distance: 3,286.3 mi
Time: 212h 33m
Elev Gain: 122,933 ft
Rides: 442

2014:
Distance: 1,650.5 mi
Time: 118h 25m
Elev Gain: 11,033 ft
Rides: 354

Compared to my 2014 (which was 99% commuting) I'm chuffed with that.

My aims for 2016 are simple - ~4000 miles, at least 150,000 ft climbing and I want to do both centuries.
Heatmaps within Strava are quite fun too, here's some I created using this tool (as the colours & map are better):

https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/details/145382/Lovelo-Cinelli-Road-Races

Found a rider from last year on the same circuit +one more lap this year. Cat 3/4 should ease me in/stretch me slightly... Basically flat, sort of like a large crit. 60 riders

Rode a Lovelo Cinelli CX event just before Christmas, was brilliantly organised for their first attempt. Good luck with the racing, you will get battered! Don't take this the wrong way but you could get spat out on the first lap :P

That's what I was thinking. For your first race, this is going to do a lot more than "stretch you slightly".

Good luck though, it'll be brilliant fun whatever happens :D

My Aims for 2017:

  • 3000 miles +
  • Imperial
  • join and stay with local training bunch rides. 35 mile loop tuesday nights. Slow group average 19.5mph! (fast group average 22mph)

Also - should I buy Fulcrum Quattro Carbon full carbon 40mm wheels???

Chap selling them on bikeradar - seems genuine, good pictures/communication etc. Also selling other gear which people have got in good condition/time etc. He says only 100 miles on them - but in my mind, they are 2nd hand carbon wheels.......

Looking for £550 for them. Brand new they are £800 plus.

A mate's old Garmin has given up the ghost and I've been trying to persuade him to have a look but he doesn't seem to be convinced as he doesn't know the brand. Looking at 510 or 810 instead

I don't work for Wahoo so won't push it further than a recommendation, after all I'm not on commission :p

I think it was Madeinhead on here who brought it to my attention initially. FT is eyeing one up too at the moment. Kimi has one as well.

Haha thanks guys. Definitely not expecting anything wonderful to come of it but looking forward to the experience. If I manage not to get dropped from the off I'll be pleased :)

Lovelo are sort of affiliated to BerkoCC (my club) so have been briefly acquainted with a few of their team on social club runs.

There's some Crit series at Hillingdon I'm also going to have a stab at in the spring too and then one or two TT's later in the year after having enjoyed last years so much and made such good progress on the course
