Road Cycling

I find it absolutely fine. Extends far enough though really I'm not too fussy.

I did 112 miles in them with temperature 0-4C just after Christmas and my legs were plenty warm and comfortable. Top half suffered a bit into the headwind on the way back in just a Gabba and some basic merino arm warmers.

Thanks.

Did you not have a base layer under the Gabba? I'd love a Gabba but they never seem to discount the long sleeved one.

Lost feeliing in my toes early on and my little fingers went fairly numb too.

Ring and little fingers going numb can be a sign of compression on the ulnar nerve (cyclists palsy) which isn't uncommon on longer rides or with a slightly less than optimal fit, hand positioning, road surface or riding style.

It's not great and leaves you with a gammy grip for between days & weeks. So I'd keep an eye on that :) unless it was literally just the cold getting to them :p

My mates ride from Teide yesterday: https://www.strava.com/activities/844012285

57 miles, 5.5 hours (moving), 8000+ ft elevation & 2400 calories! :o

Pictures are pretty awesome, his average power isn't! He really struggled, stopped loads and pretty much froze on the descent so had to keep stopping to warm up. Sounded brutal!

EDIT: Looking back at segments there, I came across a training ride of Stannards with the power data not removed. Power curve.

One for the bucket list - probably at a similar speed as well :p

I know you're not a huge fan of sportives Roady but there is a pretty decent value one (£20.00) taking place in Monmouthshire in April. 80 miles with some great quiet roads and steady climbs. It starts and ends in Newport Velodrome and includes the usual food stops etc.

Cheers, will see if it still happens when the weather gets warmer. Hoping it was just the cold.

Thanks.

Yeah but it was a basic one. I think just a cheapo Planet X one. Usually fine but as soon as the sun dropped it was cold for the last 10 miles.

I have a spare Gabba SS in Medium that I need to get rid of ;)

I think Short Sleeve is fine really. Allows you to change up the arm protection pretty easy. I often find with some long sleeve jerseys I have to add extra arm warmers or whatever anyway and I'd imagine it's hard for them to get the sleeve length good for every build.

Managed 16 miles in my lunch break, the cheapo winter bib tights i got, did their job superbly.
I really do need to find some warmer gloves though, these are sub zero rated and I still had dead mans fingers :(

Yeah 111w is very low - I suspect there is lot's of free wheeling down hills at 0 watts which is bringing the average down.

Yeah but to get up them at a speed would require more watts, or he is extremely bloke. Have you got them tightened up correctly, correct crank length, calibrated etc booyaka?

Good work fitting the miles in on your lunch break. Which winter tights did you use? I bought some from Wiggle (own brand) but the fitting is shocking and they weren't all that warm either so looking for a couple of pairs as a replacement.

Castelli, Assos, Rapha, buy cheap buy twice, I've got a pair of Assos bibs that are coming up to 4 years old, still going strongly, reckon they've probably done about 6000 miles.

My god that sounds like pain. Good suffer score!

He must have been spinning like made to only average 120w!
Yeah looking at his time elapsed and timeline data he stopped loads (not just for taking pictures!). He switched to a 52*36 and 11-28 but I have a feeling he would've welcomed lower. He commented about the descent being the 'coldest he'd ever been' and I'd had a fb 'conversation' with him the night before where he'd actually not taken any arm warmers or long sleeved jerseys with him, so was having to go shopping. Doh! He also wasn't pedalling on much of the descent, I would've been to try and keep warm!

And you're a madman riding your 808's in these winds! Unsafe!
Recommendations for Bib tights for around £70 - full leg, must be good for 0c - 10c temps, DWR finish and most importantly with a pad that covers sit bones rather than just nutsack/no mans land.

?
If you've already got good shorts then just get leg warmers and 'padless' tights to go over the top. I made the mistake of buying 3-4 pairs of bib-tights, wore them for 1-2 winters and now they're sat in my wardrobe to never be worn again. Much of that blame is on me (of course) as I bought 'winter' waterproof shorts (Sportful Fiandre NoRain), which see me through much of spring and late autumn). I just add 'roubaix' padless over the top for the winter...:rolleyes:
Roll on March and it's lovely toasty 8c climate.
I'm just looking forward to continuous over 4 degrees at the moment! Lunhtime here was brutal headwinds again. I was nearing threshold on the flat barely doing 19mph back to work for a meeting. Wasn't even running late!:eek:

Yeah I'm pretty sure Teide is on my Bucket List (not that I've ever written one). Then again my bucket list is probably this, this and a few of the spring classics added!;)

It's not that I'm against Sportives, I'm mostly against the economy of some of them. £100 for an unsupported sportive on open roads is just a money making exercise no matter how much they sugarcoat it with 'extras'. The ones starting innercity, riding out to the country and then (obviously) back innercity again annoy me - why fight with traffic and the nightmares of getting to/from there (& parking woes) when it's easily avoided starting/finishing outside of the city.

Good find though, I hadn't seen/heard of that one. Very affordable too (£20)! I'm tempted... Even thought the Newport start/finish is annoying. You doing it? :)

Colour? Maybe interested...
111w for 17.2mph in windy conditions... Doesn't seem right to me. You must be bloody aero!
See my Strava average wattage (115W) for my threshold effort at lunch, felt more like 300-400W! :p :o

It doesnt seem too far-fetched to me? It's an out and back ride so any wind should cancel out, also in a group. Weighted avg power is 130W.

Looking through my stats, the last time I had my power meter on I did 200W weighted avg which resulted in 17.3mph. I'm quite heavy (83kg) so it's not hard to imagine somebody lighter could do that at significantly lower wattage. Also had 4k climbing.

Yes I will be doing it. I agree on the cost point and that's why I am not going to do the Velothon this year. The £20 for this ride is pretty decent value as I would probably spend a tenner on drinks/food on a 80 mile ride in any event.

Oddly enough Newport Velodrome is actually good starting location (well for us based in Wales). Plenty of car parking space and provides easy access to the flats which are great for warming up!

Let me know if you decide to enter.

Not real power though?
Nope, hence me calling it 'Strava power', which is only calculated from speed (IIRC?), not the high HR and cadence lol ;)

Interesting, Strava 'estimated' power on descents, does it list anything when freewheeling? I tend to easy pedal and mine does.

Will do! I'm probably only doing the Velothon/MMH/RideBirmingham/'Popular sportive' unless one of my clubs does and I feel the need. Much more interested in the local kinda sportives/charity ones.

Chris Hunt' isn't anyone here is it? Think it's a random/Zwift pickup but wanted to check.

there was 4 of us sharing the load!!:D

Also I think there was 2 settings on my garmin when I installed the vectors. Something about ignoring "0" - ie when not pedalling or leaving it.

Think that would affect the 111W number - as it did seem super low for how sore my legs feel!!!!

88kg so certainly not light!!!

Wind was behind all the way out and 4 of us so it was a fairly easy ride out. Back was brutal with the wind and we just took turns on the front. Was showing 350W/400W at times when I was leading out etc.
