Road Cycling

Congrats on the job change and wanting to cycle that commute, much elevation? Commuting is a great way to rack up miles, ask Von how much his increased! Similar length commute too?!

Cheers, it's 800ft on the way there and 1000ft on the way back so pretty flat thankfully.

Wouldn't have considered cycling if it was a really hilly route at that distance. I'm planning on doing a Half Ironman later this year so the commuting will really help the base fitness and then just need to do longer rides on the weekend.

Hi all, Need to ask a dumb ‘starter for 10’ about HR zones.

To find my max HR, does it matter if I run instead of cycle? Most of the things I’ve read online hint/presume I would be cycling to find it out, but I can get higher HR rates running.
On the face of it, I don’t think it would matter, but if HR training zones are calculated specifically/tailored for cycling, then id be entering a number that isn’t reachable. Difference is about ~20bpm IIRC.

Your roads are perfect in comparison with most of the country! I nearly hit a squirrel this morning. Pot holes big enough here that wildlife are using them for winter nut storage! :p

Traffic maybe worse but your weather is warmer! :p

you sure? :D I blew up a tyre before xmas near central london, pothole killed it! we've got holes all over the place! I hit a pigeon more than once too :D

basically

the combo of

super heavy traffic
potholes
manhole covers
Pollution - which is horrible in warm weather

is far from ideal, I'd rather ride in quited country roads with a few traffic lights and potholes than deal with this cack :D

I'm sure you can tell that I've just about had enough of it :(

I wrongly had 4iiii pegged as a cheapy alternative to Stages but with some serious WT teams riding them (with only Sky using Stages?) there must be a reason. Maybe I need to consider them!

Think a fair few in Sky are using dual-sided Stages (unavailable to consumers) and maybe same for 4iiii?

They aren't much better. Here's a London pothole:

Half a car wheel could have fit in that. I chucked the sandbag to the side in.

Downside of quiet country lanes is that they are often coated in tractor & cow ****. My car is currently more brown than blue due to the amount of crud on the lanes round home.

You've answered your own question, what good would zones calculated off a different MHR be?

Pretty solid for base training just do longer & more intensity on weekends! Although depends on the IM course, most of them are fairly average elevation but heard of some really flat ones which suffer more from wind than anything else.

I don't think it matters for max HR, but I would be cautious of the zones as you may find that riding at tempo is then your threshold. Do a few more manic interval turbo sessions and you should start to see your bike HR hitting those high levels. At least spikes of it.

I can't imagine what it would be like running with my max HR I've seen on the turbo (196 not long ago!), as I really felt unwell afterwards. Fairly sure I got tunnel vision and was glad I was sitting down. Not bad for an old git like me! (36) ;)

Oh I'm sure you guys see more frequent large potholes, you have such a huge number of cars on the roads to cause any small hole to develop into a crevasse within a short time. Here the roads are just badly maintained - rough patches of tarmac don't get fixed, gutters overflowing due to blocked drains and mud all over the roads due to all the agricultural vehicles. Most of lines worn away/non-existent or hidden by mud and the broken surfaces/pot holes only getting repaired when they've been there a number of months and grow large enough to damage a car tyre in. The ones that don't grow never get repaired!

We get fewer isolated big holes in the road, but that just means the roads are surfaced less often and just 'patched up' for decades, rather than resurfaced. I quite regret living in Herefordshire as 25 miles away crossing the border into Powys (Wales) the roads are superbly maintained with perfect surfaces. Although that'll soon change as most of it was done with Welsh Assembly money from Europe! ;)

Probably. Several also using SRM and Pioneer, only one using power2max and none using Powertap/Garmin! In the public space Garmin and Powertap seem to be the big names followed by Stages (mostly due to them being so cheap in the US?).

To me it just seems weird that the WT brand PWM's and popularity don't really match the public space. When you consider things like frame brands the WT 'known' huge bike manufacturers (Specialized, Canyon, Giant, Merida, Cannondale etc) tend to match the brands you predominantly see out & about, with lots of otherwise smaller brands (Pinarello, Factor, Condor, Boardman etc) either trying to get their names into the WT, or seeing a large scale of their business/recognition coming from being ridden there. The same with clothing. The same with wheels. Yet same doesn't seem true for PWM's? Not yet anyway! Maybe it's just because they're such a niche and new product :)

Canyon being their totally enraging best. £7 to deliver a nut and bolt which has taken nearly a month from the initial contact till now and it's still not bloody here.
I've just had an e-mail from Canyon informing me of delayed delivery of my bike; due to 'issues with supply of external components'.
It's now due to ship w/c 6th March from the 13th Feb.

Not really an issue for me as I don't intend to start riding it until the spring weather arrives.

I actually saw a Factor out the other day. First one - I think Boardman took over from them for One Pro Cycling though?

Don't like saddle on new bike, fixing (hopefully) with this:

I suspect it's going to be firm, but fair.

Chilterns ride in August/Septmber sounds ace! Count me in!

We're Everesting Whiteleaf :p  #dead

What we could actually do, in a similar sort of fashion to my club runs, is have a set 70, 50, 30 miler route and aim to pass by particular locations or loop back on ourselves at certain times to pick up fresh legs, so those not wanting to do the longer ride(s) (or time constrained) can do a distance/speed more suited to their fitness.

The club actually sets off at the same time and rides slightly different routes at different speeds but all finish back at the same location at the same time.

I know the area relatively well so can plot up plenty of friendly (read: punishing) routes :p

I'd be up for this. Whiteleaf isn't pleasant but its a <mile at c9% average which seems gritty until you ride something like the Passo Giau which is >6 miles at 10% average! I'm 871/6300 on the Strava board! The Chilterns area is challenging. You can put together a really nice ride and there are plenty of cafes to consider for coffee and cake. ideally take in The Crong, Whiteleaf, Pink Hill for a real test of your legs!

We joked about it before, but considering Canyon's track record, you may have to prepare yourself to wait like 6 months!
Haha yeah, similar to OMS waiting 3 months for a nut & bolt! ;)

It's a shame really, can only hope they solve whatever problems they're having as I would hate to see them go out of business. They're one of the few online builders where quality doesn't come at a price premium, just delays!

Yeah Boardman now sponsor One Pro, a good move. Equally I've seen several Boardman's around, even good riders regularly riding them (rather than the Halfords 'c2w' lot). They're seeing a bit of a resurgence recently too, glad for them as they got a pretty poor rep from Halfords shifting them before, just now being seen as a quality brand!

I've never seen a Factor out and only ever seen Condor when JLT-Condor rode a local race 2 years ago and one of the LBS got a few in. Don't even know who bought them but they didn't last long in the window and not seen them out & about since!

Oooh what's that? Fabric Line.

Interested how you find it, I did try a Fabric Scoop at my LBS but didn't find it any different to the Charge Spoon I was riding at the time.

I grabbed myself a S/H Specialized Phenom (£36) for my turbo bike to match the one I'm riding that came on the Diverge. Hopefully I'll see a reduction in the saddle sores I seem to accrue a few days after any heavy turbo sessions.

Will have a Fizik Arione R5 spare if it solves it! :o

I'd be up for joining this ride but I'm not sure how easy it is to get from SW London to the Chilterns. Maybe there's a train to somewhere convenient?

Haha my friend in Tenerife just Facebook messaged me... 'Still a bit to go, I'm absolutely ******' and a picture of his bike in front of a 'Teide' sign and one of his garmin...

Time: 3:30:22 (3.5 hours)
Distance: 26.9 miles
Calories: 2444 (lol)
Total Ascent: 2088 meters ()

Edit: I'll link the ride when he's done, here's Mondays

Exactly that.

I had the Fabric Scoop but it was black and red, new bike is black and white so I Ebay'd it, but then I decided to go for the Line rather than another Scoop as the Line has the PRC. I found the Scoop really comfy, I don't seem to get on with soft saddles.
