Road Cycling

Bikes gleaming having spent two hours cleaning and maintaining them and giving the chains a thorough going over and re-lubing.

Just in time for the rain-fest on tomorrows commute! Yussss!

Been thinking about getting one of those SJCAM 4000's.

Be interested to see how well it works on the bike, if the footage is not too shaky etc.

Footage quality is fine, plenty of demo's on Youtube. Can't recall the audio with wind noise but should think there are plenty of work arounds. Can't really knock them for £60~

Yeah, I used one for a little while, but reversed the mount so it was above the handlebar as i preferred it having the hoods in view for just something else. This wasn't mounted 100% as could easily have put something inside the waterproof housing to avoid any bouncing, but most of the noise captured was from the Garmin bouncing on my cheaper mount, to be fair.

Was just a quick test a couple of years ago using the Virb software;

As above, can't complain - think mine cost £40 when I got it!

Second ride of the day this evening, on the road bike this time. Only 24 miles and even at that it was very dark by the time I got home. I did a bit of climbing and took in a cat 4 towards the end. I hadn't been planning to, but I was feeling strong so I went for it. Kept my cadence as high as I could all the way, trying to keep above 80 and above 10mph. I felt good all the way up and figured I must be on course for a PR and sure enough I ended up beating my record on that climb that's stood since 2014. Hurrah.

SJCAM4000

I bought one of these cameras a few years ago. Mine caused the GPS on my Garmin Edge 800 to fail if it came within a few inches of the camera, which when both were mounted on the bars meant it was unusable there. I think the camera probably has poor shielding as I was to be able to use a Garmin Virb without issue. Noticed anything similar happening? I still have mine and apart from that issue the camera had a decent picture and features for the price. I haven't used it in ages though.

ELEMNT died this morning, got to work and although it had been fine all ride was displaying 'Crashes found, Recover Y/N?'. :(

Pressed recover, then same again. Screen goes blank and ELEMNT restarts displaying the QR code as if it's factory reset... WTF! Couldn't get app to pair so just rode home at lunch gradually readding my sensors 1 by 1. When at home I reset it (& the app), i restarting still showing QR code. Removed it from the app and repaired to phone, ok this time. Seems all ok now and has some of my settings, is just missing the ride from this morning (which bizarrely had synced ok to Strava before the problem earlier). All ride history on device has gone along with any device customisations (I had top LEDs for power, left LEDs for HR).

Think it has updated itself, so maybe that was the cause?! Can see the little arrows at the side of speed/power to show increase/decrease.

3 (of 4) commutes mostly dry today. 25/30mph headwinds back to work at lunchtime hurt! 300W downhill to hold 15mph... :o

I guess this is what has been affecting me the last few days. Saturday felt pretty awful with a sore throat and struggling to breathe well past 150bpm (I usually avg 155-160). I smashed it up a small hill and I blew up in my breathing but my legs were saying go go go. Somehow still a PR so my previous smash attempt at that was weak!

I'll file a TUE soon.

Mine are well polished after this weekend as I rode with a friend I hadn't seen for a few months - I'd 'lost form' due to the low mileage that week.

I was going to ride with some others tonight (now cancelled) and I was going to be 'over trained' because of the turbo session yesterday.

I've never used hayfever as an excuse but the almost constant 'sniffle' I have, I could... ;)

You've got to have your excuses ready, for any occasion! :D

I'd be interested in any insights here. :)

Yes, I'd be interested as well.

Completed my first imperial century on Saturday : https://www.strava.com/activities/984366596/overview. Mainly ridden as a sportive run by one of the local cycling groups (Nova Raiders). Great value at £15 - two water stops plus a middle feed station bursting with drinks, cake and fruit. Thought I'd be shot towards the end of the sportive (66 mile route) but was going okay and even towed a couple of other guys to the finish. Eating up the early miles in a couple of decent groups must have helped. No decent groups after the feed station, so I'd pushed on solo for a good few miles.

The mobile bar and burgers at the finish were tempting but I thought they might sit a bit heavy for 30km back home, so had a gel and tootled home. Even bagged a top 10 Strava segment on the way home, so must have been something left in the legs.

In other news, possibly the best £25 I've spent on cycle gear is a Craft base layer from Merlin. Has a Windstopper front and, for me, perfect under a normal short-sleeved cycling jersey. Stops you freezing on descents or if the wind comes up but you don't completely overheat on climbs.

Staying hydrated on particularly long rides is as important as fuelling sufficiently well. Considering the profile of your ride and the impact it should have on your feed times & types is also valuable too not just from a physiological perspective but also psychologically :)
