Road Cycling

Hi,

Technical question, if I swapped a FSA BB-4000 for a Shimano Ultegra Bottom Bracket and then just got a Hollowtech Shimano crankset I presume this would all fit together? Think the crank arm is bent on the non driveside on my Pinnacle since my accident.

Thanks very much for your replies guys, I feel better having read them now and they've given me some optimism. I spoke to the bike shop where I bought my bike from earlier and spoke to a guy who started working there shortly after I bought it. He's a one of the bike fitters there and sounded very helpful indeed - I'm going to go there on Monday next week so he can see me on the bike and make sure the frame is the right size before doing anything else. He said it's easier to change a bigger frame to suit me than a smaller one so hopefully I'll be able to get more comfortable on it. I want to be able to feel like I'm in control of the bike rather than the other way around!

Should do. What is the frame? Assuming it's compatible with the Shimano BB there's it'll all work fine. From my very quick google it looks like the FSA BB-4000 is BSA 68mm but I only checked for a sec.

On tyre wear, is cracking near the rim, typically a result of over/under inflation, running tyres on over-sized rims, age ?
I typically use up retired tyres from better bike, on daily commute, pictures are

These fittings are within those specified at https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

I am the same height as you and also have a 56 frame. In hindsight I think a 54 would have been better but I have made adjustments and am happy with rides over 50 miles. How is your flexibility? Once I improved this (my general flexibility is like an iron rod) my comfort improved massively.

Found the answer on Evans website, and yes will all work.

my flexibility isn't good at all!

If I try and touch my toes with my legs straight I'm about 20cm away!

Well you would definitely improve your comfort by working on your hamstring, back and hip flexibility! Just set aside 5-10 minutes an evening whilst watching TV.

I assume so, just about the right amount of bend in my knee when cycling.

Bend is something that's quite hard to tell yourself really, especially without a goniometer. Simplest method that seems to work quite well I find is the LeMond method. Using the first part of this guide to measure your inseam;

http://www.wikihow.com/Size-a-Road-Bike

And supposedly 0.883 * inseam should be the distance from the centre of your bottom bracket to the mid point of your saddle.

My bike has developed a clicking noise when pedaling which goes away when it's raining. It seems to be coming from the pedal area or perhaps the crank area. Any idea what it may be?
I had this exact issue, it was my rear qr skewer. Cleaned and doused the mechanism in gt85 and all was well

Cheers, I will check it tonight. It's the only thing I've adjusted as well recently when I moved it off the TT.

Also, those who commute - mud/rain guards?

3 of 3 wet commutes so far today. Think I'm over wet weather riding already, at least with this humidity. Leg warmers this morning and heavens opened on my way in - soaked. Waterproof trousers at lunchtime, worked well in the downpour home, but in the warm headwind back to work I utterly cooked. Rain had all but stopped! :rolleyes:

Lets talk Gel expiry date.
I know that they are 99% sugar so I think they should last well past their expiry date...but do they?
I've taken them up to 2 months after exp but no longer. Gel's don't agree with me at the best of times but noticed no difference to 'usual'.

They're both 24mm spindles, so you may not even need to change the BB's?... Both are 'standard threaded' BB's so should just swap over anyways. This table on wheelsmfg kinda confirms that with the same adaptor (and handily mentions the width of the BB's being the same).

Good news and hopefully result. Explain to the fitter your general fitness and flexibility (low) along with the amount of riding you've done (low) as well as your aims (comfort/relaxed for now to get you riding). He otherwise may assume you're club riding/racing and you're after speed, rather than comfort. He'll then adjust to suit! :)

Not quite sure what the question mark is for...?

Commute = mudguards.

Now I'm riding fixed guards I've only removed them twice this year for weekend rides. Too much hassle removing them even if the forecast is good for a week - as in the UK it can rain anytime! ;)

I'm sure someone with more experience will be able to comment, but looking at the rest of the tyre (particularly the left one) I would suggest it is just age related. Might be specifically where tyre levers have been, especially with the tyres being swapped between rims, and no doubt would have had punctures at some point as well.

Check your pedals for radial/axial play, could be bearing related. Equally check your BB for play too.

Could well be worth dissembling, cleaning and reassembling. As it may well just be dirt, grit or grime.

Also consider your cleats are clean and secure too.

This morning sucked. It was pouring down for one thing, then about three miles in I got a puncture. I had to stop and fix it in the rain. There was a thorn stuck so badly in the face of the tyre I had to pull it out with my teeth.

Phew!

Can start increasing my miles again now internal interviews and other activities are out of the way. Been able to keep.my legs turning in that time.

Anyone got any experience going from V2 to V3 campag ergos? V3's seem to have a fair bit more reach (possibly as much as 5mm?) to the hand resting position. Got one set of each on two bikes with otherwise identical fits, and the V2 bike has always felt more comfortable....

Chasing down and spelling every attack made by a young racer is hard! Must get more savvy and let other people shut them down.

Headwind on the way in meaning i was still faster solo last week but 2 minutes up on the way out.
