Road Cycling

Did a couple of 500W+ kicks on the commute in today, tried one yesterday but with the wet roads all I did was spin the back wheel. All good, so fingers crossed my BB click has all been solved by removing, cleaning & refitting BB with anti-seize. First BB fitting I've done - easy when you have the right tools & instructions! ;)

This morning sucked. It was pouring down for one thing, then about three miles in I got a puncture. I had to stop and fix it in the rain. There was a thorn stuck so badly in the face of the tyre I had to pull it out with my teeth.
Can't get much more Rule #5 than that.

Chasing down and spelling every attack made by a young racer is hard! Must get more savvy and let other people shut them down.

Headwind on the way in meaning i was still faster solo last week but 2 minutes up on the way out.
Great ride & nice avg mate. Ton of PR's and 2nd's so you're in some fine form! Kudos! :D

first ride with the Wahoo Bolt today, finally retiring my Garmin 810 to the turbo. Love the UX and UI, but.. does it not do Turn By Turn cues for Strava routes? It synced all my non-private routes down and gave me a breadcrum trail, but I didn't get any turn cues or beeps

Went out for a ride tonight and it felt a lot better. I changed the psi from 120 to 110 and I felt a lot more comfortable. No aches or anything. I didn't realise it would make such a difference?

I think routes on RWGPS will include TBT. Not something I've tried with my Elemnt :o

120 would be like a rock! I ride 25mm tyres at like 90psi, maybe 100 on the rear if I'm doing serious business riding. Much comfier than 23s at 120 which is what I started out on. As for the cx bike with 35mm tyres at 50psi... ridiculously comfy over anything.

My 520 rebooted itself mid segment this morning, so it didn't register the full 36 off segment. Slightly annoyed would be an understatement, as I was 1:30 ahead with a few miles to go when it had a fit. Next time.....

Nope, it doesn't. Garmin units can as they are true 'mapping' units (the unit does the TBT & route over the map) whereas the E/B are not true mapping units, able to only take TBT if the instructions are in the .gpx (which RWGPS does, but Strava etc don't). It's one of the very few shortfalls. With the recent updates you can 'return to start' on them, but they won't for example reroute if you miss a turn.

What width tyres? Huge difference at those pressures, you'll notice even more going down to 25mm and running 90PSI from 23mm if that's what you're riding.

#garminwoes. Although I've had my ELEMNT restart a couple of times, it's loads less than my old 810.

My 820 has only restarted on me twice in a year (admittedly I've not ridden enough). The other time it just hung on me and had to hard reset it. Can't remember if it picked up from where it left off. Probably not.
Still really quite impressed with it.

My 1000 has only rebooted three times that I can remember in the past year, which for the amount of miles I do I would say isn't too bad compared to my phones etc.

In typical "not following the herds" fashion (part of the reason for my obscure alias on other online sites ;) ), after recently agonising over whether to spend out on a Bolt or Elemnt, I have a Lezyne Super GPS arriving from Probikekit for ~£96 including Topcashback. For the price, the features including those improved in the recent firmware update sounds obscene... I just hope it is far less a regretted purchase than the Sony Smartwatch 3 I bought in Feb mainly for GPS tracking!

Anyone ever replaced their Garmin 810 battery and if so which type of battery did you buy (i.e. does it provide as good a performance as the original when it was new?

My 810 battery is starting to run flat quicker and quicker these days and I see online you can buy replacement, unofficial Garmin batteries and change the battery yourself (with the help or some tiny screwdrivers and spatulas!).

Certainly works with ride with gps routes.

Works fine with ridewithgps. I'm sure I read something on dcrainmaker about why it doesn't work with Strava, but I forget why it is.

I have the Element and it works very well for this when paired with Ridewithgps. The auto syncing is very handy and compared to my previous Garmin 500 it is a revelation in terms of navigation.

The Elemnt is far better for navigation (clearer maps, easier to view in sunlight) than the 810 I previously used. Also far less crashy - as in, zero crashing.

Wifi route sync with various sites is awesome. UI through the phone app is modern compared to Garmin's horrific 90s abomination. Massively easier to configure.

Free maps without having to deal with downloading stuff manually too.

And the Elemnt is cheaper.

You'd be mad to buy anything other than the Elemnt (Bolt) at the moment really. That said, if you've already got a 520 or above then there's not much point in switching unless you start to have the not exactly rare Garmin device crashing problems that many have.

Regarding turn-by-turn... it's so unreliable on the Garmin that I turned it off. I could use RWGPS to have faux turn-by-turn on the Bolt but I don't see the point in this as I assume it will be just as unreliable as the Garmin for it.

I haven't but I'm interested to hear how you get on. My 810 battery is dead I believe. I've taken the Garmin apart and took the battery out to have a look (which was quite easy to do) but haven't bought a new one yet.

My bike has developed a clicking noise when pedaling which goes away when it's raining. It seems to be coming from the pedal area or perhaps the crank area. Any idea what it may be?

I had this exact issue, it was my rear qr skewer. Cleaned and doused the mechanism in gt85 and all was well

Check your pedals for radial/axial play, could be bearing related. Equally check your BB for play too.

Could well be worth dissembling, cleaning and reassembling. As it may well just be dirt, grit or grime.

Also consider your cleats are clean and secure too.

Couldn't find anything wrong with my bike but the noise is getting worse. I rang my local bike shop and they're going to take a look at it this afternoon for me. Hopefully they can fix it before the end of the day, if not I'll be getting the bus home and collecting the bike tomorrow. I normally take the bus on a Friday to bring in fresh clothes for the following week and so I can go to the pub after work so not too bad.

Had a decent ride last night after 2 days off after the sportive, pretty flat but just wanted to spin the legs and keep a decent pace. Planned on doing 10-12 miles, then got to the point where I'd turn to head home and think "let me just add this bit on", must have done that 3 or 4 times so ended up doing 37 miles :D

Tried to be on the drops as much as possible, I find it pretty comfortable but find my lower back is ruined after prolonged periods. Is that just something you get used too or is it a potential saddle height/position issue?
