My 820 has only restarted on me twice in a year (admittedly I've not ridden enough). The other time it just hung on me and had to hard reset it. Can't remember if it picked up from where it left off. Probably not.
Still really quite impressed with it.
My 810 started with the occasional 'once every couple of months' random freeze/restart while usually navigating. This progressed to occasional freezes when trying to sync over BT to my android smartphone. I changed maps & memory cards. The BT sync got worse where nearly every time I wanted to upload an activity I'd have to reset the 810 before it'd complete a BT transfer, it just wouldn't 'send' without a reboot. It then started to freeze so I'd have to two button reset it a couple of times just to sync. I played around by downgrading the firmware but made it worse! After downgrading (no change) I did a factory reset (no change) & upgraded to latest firmware and it was still b0rked. I basically ended up with BT turned off on my handset as any time the 810 would connect on BT it would freeze and using sync via garmin connect plugged into my PC. The BT freeze was really annoying mid-ride and I lost several parts of rides due to it and some complete activites (I generally have BT on for handsfree in the car so often I'd forget...)!
TLDR; if your Garmin starts playing up under warranty get it replaced. I struggled to get any support from Garmin with a device 2-3 years old. The 810 is also pretty worthless second hand, there were working units being flogged for £40 on ebay. For that price I decided to keep mine for use on the turbo (and probably MTB/off-road use in future).
In typical "not following the herds" fashion (part of the reason for my obscure alias on other online sites
), after recently agonising over whether to spend out on a Bolt or Elemnt, I have a Lezyne Super GPS arriving from Probikekit for ~£96 including Topcashback. For the price, the features including those improved in the recent firmware update sounds obscene... I just hope it is far less a regretted purchase than the Sony Smartwatch 3 I bought in Feb mainly for GPS tracking!
They (and the newer Cateye) have slipped fairly under the radar...
DCR reviews it well and although ugly it reads/reviews like a solid unit (and valid alternative to Garmin/Wahoo).
That's me 30 psi too high on the front.
Similar to me... 176 lbs (me+kit) on 28mm is 51 PSI front (I run 70PSI) and 79PSI rear (I run 80-85PSI). I doubt I'd drop my front that low, I did notice it go down to around 60 on the front over winter and kept it there for some extra grip. Anything lower feels too spongey and I'm paranoid I'll pinch-flat it if I catch a pothole wrong...
Anyone ever replaced their Garmin 810 battery and if so which type of battery did you buy (i.e. does it provide as good a performance as the original when it was new?
My 810 battery is starting to run flat quicker and quicker these days and I see online you can buy replacement, unofficial Garmin batteries and change the battery yourself (with the help or some tiny screwdrivers and spatulas!).
Guy I kinda know
did it on an 800 and it looked simple. As for battery types/performance, not really much idea but see if you can find either genuine/original or one of the well known cheaper battery brand alternatives for smartphones. I always go with ankor if I can, no idea if they do them for Garmin's though...
Wifi route sync with various sites is awesome.
Yup, superb! Especially as you can even sync RWGPS/Strava directly from the unit itself (on WiFi) so you don't even need the companion app...
Can someone recommend me a cheap but decent GoPro Hero 3 mount for the front of my bike please?
I've always liked Superstar but recently switched to K-Edge, but they're certainly not cheap! Superstar are great quality, hardest thing is catching them in stock...!
