Road Cycling

4 Seasons are a good bet yep. Wouldn't see a much of an issue with GP4000 SIIs either for winter but probably a little less puncture resistant.

My sodding grub screw for the brake pad has rounded out

Cheers, will just see what I can the best deal on. They'll probably be far superior to these ling longs anyway.

For the grub screw, have you tried a slightly bigger Alan key, maybe an imperial one and jamming it in there with enough force to just get it out?

Yeah. I've got no mole grips but eventually managed to get a good enough grip on it with some basic pliers and got the thing out!

I had tried super gluing an allen key into it but I don't think my super glue is strong enough.

Urgh, 100 mile sportive tomorrow and low and behold after the guy who sits opposite at work has been coughing and snotting all week I've now come down with something

I'll give it a try. The 50 mile lunch stop is actually back at the start point so if I need to I can bail out.

Was awesome meeting you both :)

I'm actually going to clean my bike this evening. I hope you're both proud of your bike-shaming :p

Pleasure to meet you too & ta for the routes. Shame it was too gross (and we were also a bit too spent) to head up Mow Cop but Sky Road, Jackson and the Cat & Fiddle all need doing soon.

I actually have evidence of the state of your bike should I ever need it :p

When you take back the lead on Pyms, Blaze and Brickworks let me know trolololol ;)

Draft a lot and take it as easy as possible up any hills. You'll be fine :)

Yep, I made it. Weird ride though. I felt ok if not 100% for the first 50 miles. 50 to 80 I felt dreadfull. Headache, difficulty breathing, no energy, aching everything. Basically the full works. Had a coffee at the last drink stop which ended up with us being stopped for nearly 20 minutes. When I got back on the bike I felt loads better, even better than I did at the start

Nothing to set the world on fire but a good achievement for me as I don't get out for long rides much anymore - https://www.strava.com/activities/1143380130

Agh. Don't know how you guys push out the distances you do. I'm trying to build up from my regular 30-35 mile jaunts, and it's a real struggle. Managed just over 45 miles last weekend, but legs were cramping after 40. Tried again today and hit a 'wall' again around 45 miles - hills after this point we're really tough and I had to take quite a few rest stops. However I made sure I was still 20 miles from home at this point so I had to push through it and topped 67 miles (just on 5hrs, 4000ft of elevation gain).

Does it get any easier...?

It does with constant practice. Probably the best thing is a lot of riding. Doesn't even have to be long rides - just make sure they are fuelled well!

This isn't quite what I wanted to see on a relatively steady hill avoidance ride today... I was just exploring and going by road signs / Garmin / Google maps to get between places. http://veloviewer.com/segments/781311

After taking it easy for a few weeks while my suspected periformis syndrome was a bit sore, this week has been a bit balmy...

Increasing my longest ever ride twice in four days, from ~53 on Thursday to ~63 miles today
New elevation pb for ride today of ~4500 feet, five(?) cat4 hills helped
New week total mileage pb of ~182, an improvement of ~45 miles

Got a feeling that work tomorrow, including the cycle commutes, might be a bit achey!;)

Think I'm up about 1000 miles on last year and my most miles for any year so far at 2900 so far.

That John Campbells chaingang was quite good if you fancied a bunch that wasn't eyeballs out Michael, big bunch meets Tuesday 6.30pm across from the Bothwell bridge hotel at the monument. Two groups last night, think the fast group I was in averaged 19mph to where I cut off to meet the bundy which was then 22.5mph for the rest of the route.

Cheers mate, that sounds like it might be quite a good option for me. Not sure i'd manage the faster group just yet, but tbh anything to give me an option to ride with other people would be nice. I'm not fit enough for bundy/sat 10am bunch etc and there's nobody really turning up for the 9.30 slower bunch any more. Is it affiliated with a particular club?

In my ongoing quest to fail at slacking, this weekend i managed my longest ride with most climbing since i got back on the bike. It's really the only sportive i'm interested in doing these days, as it's not a rip off and helps local community. Spent most of the ride in a group with the kids from our club. Even though most of them are about 10 and had all been racing on saturday, they still kicked my ass.

Had one wee sketchy moment when the boy in front of me lost his rear wheel in some wet and gravel and went down right in front of me. Managed to throw the anchors on and stop with my front wheel resting against his bike. Then me and the guy next to me started to do that slow motion 'keel over sideways' thing, and i had a bit of a struggle getting unclipped and getting my foot down without kicking his bike as we were so close to each other, but just managed to get there before we both fell into the muddy ditch. Which would have been funny, but also pretty nasty for the next 40 miles. :D

As usual, the cake stops were the best thing and i finished weighing more than when i started.

£32 :( I thought my £39 ones from Merlin were a bargain :p
Haha, well these in theory are Wiggle returns from their Ebay page so not 'new'. Sometimes things are just lacking packaging, sometimes they've been worn for a trial (like these, they smell of washing powder, otherwise pristine), other times they've been used and abused before being returned. Providing things are good condition it doesn't bother me, even shorts. I wash them before use obviously! Saving 50% off new price means I can have more kit... ;)

Why on earth did you pay money for a cycling top with m&ms on?!
I wanted some cheap commuting jerseys and liked the idea of lots of colours. Considering it's a from one of those annoying Facebook adverts I'm quite surprised over the quality. It's better fabric and cut/fit than the Primal and Santini jerseys I have.

I'd have put the money towards a better dishwasher, tbh. :p
Pfffft! Surprised you can make it out!? Freebie with the house so can't complain! It's a Beko so not too bad!

Que? :o

Had a lovely bromantic cycling trip with @BennyC in the Peaks.
Glad you had a good trip guys! Weather actually looked good!?

When you take back the lead on Pyms, Blaze and Brickworks let me know trolololol ;)
Oh no he dint! :o

Supreme accomplishment considering your kinda lack of training! Well done! :D

Does it get any easier...?
Nope, you just go faster... /LeMond.

You can easily plateau just riding the same distance and rides, mix them up a little (do a faster paced or really hilly 20, then try a relaxed pace 40) or double them up (two 30's sequential days) to push yourself through.

Not recovering very well from Thursday's off. shoulder of the arm I landed on is still very tight and sore.
Heal up, hope nothing else comes to light.
Rest up and take it easy, extra recovery! Our bodies are amazing and resilient but they do need more time after damage/abuse like that.

Personally I find anything over 60 miles a struggle on my own. I'd say a 100 with plenty of stops is comparable to a solo 60 for me.

Cheers! It was a pretty uneventful one for us thankfully, not sure I was in a state to deal with any drama!

I'm definitely back on the wagon with cycling now. Weekends will always be an issue but that doesn't stop me getting out after work.
