Road Cycling

Ok, now why didn't I think of that?! Actually mate my Garmin will be going on ebay soon - I'm absolutely sick of it, probably pick up a Bolt or something end of the month.

Have you done the compare the March event to the Sept event thing yet to see how you've progressed? Not exactly the same route of course but similar enough I suppose.

Here's mine:

Some progress, something to work on.
Compare of our efforts going up Dovers - looks like just before 0.7 miles you lost your legs and further up starting walking :D

That's where a Power Meter comes in handy - I was pacing myself up at around 320w

The graphs show how being consistent on effort your helps. [Dovers Hill climb segment]

That's the long and short of it sdk - i thought i wss over it, then realised i wasn't and just died.

I think i stopped riding twice, once to exchange pleasantries with a lady - who was also dying, and once to get my legs back! :D

This is in contrast to March's Saintbury effort which I found ok - I'm not sure how to find the Saintbury climb I did from my phone?

Had a week off last week as I'm really suffering with sore elbows and forearms feel quite sore/tired from how terrible the road surfaces are and the vibrations and jolts going right through the bars. Seems to be getting a bit better not still not great.

Any tips other than trying not to be so tense and keeping a slight bend in my arms

I did say when we adjusted your saddle after it worked loose in the peaks that having it angled quite so far down at the front would potentially place more weight on to your wrists, despite it feeling comfortable at the time.

Level it back up with a spirit level and stick to changing hand position regularly and investing in some well padded gloves and or double bar tape for a while.

I had palsy for around 2 to 3 weeks as part of an extremely poor fit/adjustment, it'll pass if you don't keep aggravating it.

Lifting again might not be helping, particularly with any heavy pressing.

Although it can really damage your willpower...! Climbing 'The Tumble' a week ago I'd heard that after the two switchbacks on the lower slopes things 'eased up'. I was a long way past them and things still felt tough, switching to my elevation screen on my ELEMNT I could see the 'grade' still being measured over 10%. I'd gone quite hard around the switchbacks so had to ease up when the expected respite didn't arrive... :o

I hate looking at my elevation screen during a climb. Don't want to know what's coming up ideally :D Though I'll look at it now and again to see when big climbs are approaching so I know it's probably best to ease off a little beforehand.

Thoughts on this? Front zonda has a dent to the side of the rim and the brake track. I can feel it if I run my finger over it. Photo is purposely small so you can see the difference. New wheel time I guess... shame they don't sell individually :(

To be honest the start of Sky Rd is a bit steep but most of it is pretty steady and it's never utterly horrendous. I say that now having not tried to Everest it :p

To be honest if there's something of an even more mild gradient I'd consider it...

Heh. Of all climbs I have done the one I'd feel most comfortable everesting is this: https://www.strava.com/segments/6144714 Though it's in California... Only 6 laps required and I never felt the gradient necessitated raising my heart rate.

You'll feel that through the brakes for sure.

Might be worth calling up your local campag service centre. They can get individual wheels, possibly even rims. May not be cost effective tho

Numb hands, what's the deal with that? Anything I can do fit wise to fix that?
Get some gel inserts under your bar tape! The ones on my Diverge are superb! I'm able to wear a pair of gloves I couldn't wear for more than an hour or two previously without my thumbs going numb. If you're looking for Gloves with gel inserts then I can recommend the GripGrab Super Gel, the pad on the palm is really thick and they're one of my most worn pair of gloves (literally falling apart from use after 2+ years & abuse commuting).

Looks like it's been damaged from the side, although no marks in paintwork, do you recall hitting anything? Anything on the inside? It looks like a minor enough dent to continue riding on but I'd measure it (& depth) keeping an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get worse. It could've been caused by just having something pressed against it in storage/transport. You could ask a wheelbuilder if they could remove it or what they think of it but I guess most would say to replace. Could be worth a conversation with Campag to check if there's any extended rim warranty.

Raising bars/stem so you're not leaning so hard on your bars and supporting more of your weight with your core. Dropping a couple of PSI on your front is an easier option - to allow your tyre to take more of the shocks before transferring them up your arms. Bigger tyre volumes if you have the clearance really help, especially if you're thinking about changing tyres to something different over winter.

And what better way to go back than to do 25 reps of it? :p
FT making and breaking friends! ;)

God, shifting my fat ass up that once would be utter torture lol
25 reps of the pretzel instead? :D

What I really want to do is head over there and go to Holmfirth and have tea and cake st the tea shop they used in Last of the Summer Wine :p
I'm voting for the Von ride and not the FT ride xD

I think I'm going to finally chop in my crappy shimano shoes and get some Fiziks. I have some mint Mavic Cosmic Ultimate II's but they come up too small for me, so have worn them like twice.

Want to go for the Fizik R1Bs, anyone know how fizik come up size wise, compared to mavics? I looked online and it said that the 43 should be a good size, but the 43 in the mavics were too tight.

I can only imagine it is damage from my flight to Inverness in April when the top tube was damaged too. Wheels sit on the outside of the Evoc case and it was clearly chucked around to get the top tube damage too. In which case it's probably been ridden many thousands of miles since but not sure I want to trust it. I noticed the noise from my ripped tyre sprinting at 35mph yesterday which consequently lead me to this later on!

Aksium front on at the moment. Super flexy!

So, who's up for this next year? May/June?

/madman

Obviously time +1 or +2 hours for additional rest stops.

I also hope to be sub-80kg for the ride.

As mentioned I'll come along for support/company and to provide a handsome ass, sorry, wheel to follow :p

If I were going to do similar down here I'd pick Aston Wood Climb over towards Wattlington just past Chinnor.

  • 1.7m with a max grade of about 7% (4% avg)
  • decent surface
  • 2 lanes wide on the ascent and 1 on the descent
  • Good visibility with plenty of tree cover too for shade
  • Safe rest station location
  • Low traffic levels, with a second safe lane for passes anyway :)

Can't help but think a shorter segment will break up the monotony with more regular descents and rest periods. Also something like 60-70 shorter 10 min efforts would be easier to sustain than 20-30 long 30 minute stints?

Could plod along quite happily up this 10% higher than the estimated power shown so time would come down a tad too

Also, wanted to add the D-Fly Bluetooth thing to my bikes, but unsure how best to do this? Do I need this one: https://www.bike24.de/p1164034.html
