Road Cycling

Another glorious day in Southampton, heavy rain and thunderstorms expected this afternoon, another day I'm loathed to use during my week off to go riding! :(

One single ride of 48.5 miles since last Saturday afternoon, whoopee do!

Your riding shouldn't suffer too much, it's all about compromise with your partner. Mine has always been good at letting me keep my hobby, be it the gym or cycling in the evening, and in return at weekends, I'll take him out for the day if she needs some time off and let her chill out, or if there's an evening during the week then I'm happy to swap. But you saw how much I've ridden over the summer, it certainly wasn't lacking and nor should it for you. It's just difficult in Winter as I can only go out after 7 but that's fine with indoor training.
Thanks! Both of us are so overly excited but I'm sure that'll soon wear off through labour, fatigue & lack of sleep! :D ;)

Life is full of compromises already and I'm pretty good at prioritising things but until now those priorities have mostly been under my control, this little bundle is coming along straight into priority #1! I think that's partly what scares me - everything is going to be compromised by him in some way. I've seen fairly steady but good progress with my riding & fitness over the last 3 years, it's going to be quite hard to see that taper off and maybe go backwards! :o

Well I wear padded shorts under my baggies on the mountain bike. As for training riders ... errr :o
Ahh, at least you've got some padding then! I wouldn't worry about baggies, the only real issues you'll face is them flapping more in the wind, holding more moisture, maybe rubbing more and other roadies looking down their nose at you!

Too late for training now! All you can do is fuel well and pace yourself for it! Depending how much enduro type riding you've done before (and of course speed) will determine how you cope with the time in the saddle. You're probably going to be seated for the majority of 4-5 hours, if you're not ridden for anywhere near that duration before you'll really need to pace it. Chamois cream (if you have it), changing position regularly, standing for relief, a large dose of HTFU and maybe some painkillers should see you through! :)

If you've done nothing like it before the excitement will help a lot, just don't go out too hard! Enjoy it, it's going to hurt like hell but remember everyone will be hurting, you'll build some strong bonds of friendship and when you get to that dark place push through! The feeling of accomplishment you'll get afterwards is well worth it! :)

Tour of Britain passing through on sunday, have made plans to ride out to 'British Camp' next to Malvern which is the first KOM on the route, think it's possibly the main/hardest climb they'll do early in the stage.

There's some rain forecast for later in the afternoon as well as a headwind for them most of the way to Cardiff, getting stronger the closer they get! Will be a fast one!

@Saytan You'll laugh at this one... Utterly b0rked my wheel last night after getting it 90% there on wednesday. Got carried away balancing it perfectly... Fitted into frame and it's so badly dished one way it was jammed against the chainstay as I hadn't been checking dishing since adding tension... FFS! Time to start again! Noob!

Have a good weekend all! :D

I was planning to take a day off and ride out and see the ToB, but it was just that bit too far away and I've been just that bit too busy this week. Oh well, maybe next year. This would have been my fifth year running, so it's a shame to have missed it! 2015 was the best - chased it round Lancashire and saw it in three different places!

Should get a glimpse at the starting end of tomorrows stage. Could head the other direction and watch them on the KOM on one of my regular climbs but I like to be done & dusted on a Saturday as I've always plenty to do :p

Plus the company of the club run is more appealing than a solo 70m.

Witnessed the fitness this morning

Another ride on the cobbles today:

Knokteberg I didn't find too taxing however Paterberg and Oude Kwaremont were fairly hideous. Bone shattering in places and the cobbles were a little greasy but no dramas.

Ran into a group at the top of Paterberg including Johan Museeuw, he was taking them on a tour around the climbs. I need to look into it!

Well, that was hard work. I felt like my engine had enough gas, but my legs were flagging towards the end. Got caught in an enormous downpour. I know some guys do these rides multiple times a week, but that's my longest ride to date. Need a beer.

Nice work! Did you have a fall?

Not aware of anyone that regularly do almost 90 mile rides in the week. Maybe sometimes people end up doing Saturday and Sunday but that's a stretch too!

Yeah, I've only been riding clips for a month or so. I was chugging up an incline when the chain dropped off the cranks, my legs span furiously and then I toppled over in a heap  :(

My tt got called off this morning after I'd arranged to help out my old man. Cue rushing like a blue ass fly to get the jobs done, get back home and out the bike and back before the impending rain.

Bit frustrating as was my last opportunity to get a 10mi pb and weather wasn't so bad in the end.

It's a learning process. You understand what you did wrong, that's knowledge that'll stand you well going forward. My first couple were pretty under-tensioned, resulting in them slowly starting to undo themselves over 500 miles or so

Took a diversion through a bunch of stinging nettles on a singletrack road this morning. Oncoming polo driver seemed to be treating it like a rally stage. Okay it was a blindish bend but surely you don't hit it at 25+ mph and you hug the left not the right? Fortunately I was going slow enough and had just enough room to get by otherwise I'd have been through his windscreen.
