Road Cycling

Panic over!

Had a good night last night other than being threatened by a pleb in a van who got out, had the usual chat with us cyclists, got back in then pretended to drive at me and the boss. I must have shouted 'away to **** ya ****' or something to that effect. He was then gesturing with a hammer....'a ******* hammer???' That was after one driver made a point of calling us pussies and another shouting about being in a cycle path.

FTP test later. #Pray4Roady :o
Well that didn't go well... Previous FTP 273W and now 272W luls! (expecting/hoping for around 300W!)

I wasn't really that warmed up for this 20 min test, or that rested and had only been on the turbo once in 6 weeks prior. I started out really badly by blowing up on the 2 minute 325W ramp (after 3 minutes of 295W) before the actual test! LOL :( :E

Took an extra few minutes in the '6 minutes easy', but figured I may as well do the test anyway. Paced it horribly! Really think I need some sweetspot sessions before the next attempt!

20 min test I went a little too hard after the build to 290W start thinking I could hold 300W and destroyed myself having to recover. Stupidly I did it another couple of times needing a good 20/30s at 230/240W to recover soon afterwards, really shouldn't be recovering mid FTP test! 15 minutes in I was totally empty and fading fast, I stood a couple of times to empty the tank but just couldn't hold the power. Disappointed as I don't know when I'll get a chance to do another (baby due in 4 days!). I'll have lost fitness anytime after his arrival as the 2 weeks paternity I'm taking I won't have much riding volume (along with just commuting & not much sleep/rest in the weeks afterwards!).

Apparently, only 2 people have ever done it and the current record is 5 years - that sounds beatable to me!
Aero pedalo required!

Yeah, and me. I seem to nearly get knocked of almost ever ride nowadays. Need to start taking my camera out routinely.
:o

Hope you're ok buddy!

Get Heinz to sponsor?
I chuckled. :D

And found it... Fresh eyes this morning!
Result! They sound like a nightmare to source the exact one/size/depth without buying a whole new headset. :o

EDIT: Way to go Tom Pidcock! Junior World TT Champion! :D

So lets get that straight... Cyclecross Junior National, European & World Champion. Criterium National Champion (not Junior!). National Junior Track Champion and now also World Junior TT Champion! MACHINE! :o

Yeah I'm good! I finally got a payout from the car insurance company after that guy knocked me off. So that's sorted.

I've sadly not been getting out so much recently, but when I do there always seems to be an incident :) Sunday, I was cycling down here when a guy pulls out slowly from a house on the right. I had to go into the middle lane to overtake. Good job nothing was coming.

Goodsell claimed that he had not been deliberately reaching for the 18-inch serrated Garza knife, but had in fact been attempting to prevent some pies lying next to it from falling off the seat.
Maybe he was just reaching for some pies?

Do you guys use ERG mode on your trainers?

I have it switched off, but now thinking it should actually be on for training and races.

Should it also be on for ftp tests?

Glad to hear your claim is all sorted, bike/repairs/replacement too?

Some days/weeks riding just seem to attract idiots! :(

I was just checking my KOM's and noticed someone created a 'last 10 miles' segment from the Mad Summer Hare ride earlier this month and I have the quickest time :)

Sounds fun Roady :)
Is the FTP workout course uphill / flat - any downhills?
Nice KOM! Especially nice you didn't know about it! I'd love to get to the stage of getting KOM's without trying! I've only got 2! ;)

FTP tests are never fun, they hurt! A test (or even a training session) on Zwift is 'exempt' from control by the simulated environment (doesn't get harder up a hill), but your 'speed' on the platform is reflected by your power output still.

Christ, how the hell can he justify having an 18 inch machete!? Lay in full view on his passenger seat?! My dad (farmer) got arrested for having a pocket knife (3" or less blade?) after he set off a metal detector when out shopping in Birmingham. It took some considerable time to convince Police he was genuine & not a threat!

Also actual ROFL at one of the comments - "This is why it pays to be nice to people. This whole "Do you want some?" incident could have ended up with the cyclists sharing some neatly cut slices of tasty pie." :D

It should be on if you want to ride any training plans so the trainer can adjust resistance without you needing to change gear.

I have mine on 99.9% of the time. For my FTP test last night it only impacts during the warm up, then the first part of the test you hold a wattage and it is providing resistance. I'm guessing the trainer has used the previous ERG to set the resistance similar to what it 'thinks' is correct for your approximate power output & cadence it expects you to hold for the test. It did mean if I wanted to change the wattage I had to change gears so it holds steady.

There is no real 'course'. It's a fixed 20 minute effort, so the grade is irrelevant so to speak as the power should be kept on and consistent.

Yes, unless the change in pace on/off is less than 5-10 seconds as the trainer won't keep up.

ERG mode shouldn't be used for FTP tests, slope or resistance mode should be used so you can pace your own effort and not be at the mercy of a trainer.

Maybe that's where I went wrong last night! Here's me blaming my legs and pacing... ;)

I'm fairly certain ERG mode creates a low inertia vs resistance mode which is a bit more forgiving. Some are suited a little more to either. So you may perform more adversely depending on whether you find it easier to hold high power at high speed or high power at low speed.

Plenty of other factors at play, fuelling, temperature, sleep, sickness, time of day etc.

I don't really find the standard warm-up and clearing effort sufficient, normally it takes me a good 45-50 minutes to start fully firing on all cylinders with my weekday evening rides.

So would ERG mode make the turbo quieter, by virtue of reducing the spin needed to make a target power?

I'd be inclined to say it's a moot point as X-watts will require a given amount of brake requirement from the trainer.

But also could say the opposite as the brake will be constantly fluctuating on and off to a degree to maintain a given power output in ERG mode. If you produce more power the brake eases and power & noise falls, if you slow it increases and power & noise rise.

Where as on resistance mode it's set & fixed but you can 'spin out' to an extent too.

I'm not sure any audible difference will be given between the same power output in different modes. Actual powers, yes, but modes I'm not certain.

Trainer noise is dependent on speed not power - You could be at 300w doing 5mph or 50mph :)
The faster you're going the more noise your trainer will make.

Gotcha, so yes now come to think of it mine was making a fair bit of noise (my setup is in the garage which is partly underneath a bedroom) on flat/downhill sections - and at 9pm I'm risking waking up one of the kids, which in my house is punishable by death, torture, then more death. :p

I think I just need to get my turbo sessions started earlier so I can be done making noise come 9pm.

Might work from home tomorrow in which case I should be able to sneak a session in.
