Road Cycling

If a couple of people have learned something useful from my ramblings, I'm happy.

You put it better than me and appear to be arsed. I do spent all day talking about it so can't be arsed typing things online.

Had the pleasure of building a Kinesis Tripster AT, Ultegra R8020 and hunt wheels today. A bike I would totally own! Maybe not with an 11-34 but for what the guy will be doing it'll be ideal.

Yellow warning of ice for tomorrow. Good job I’ve got my ice tyres on my cross bike. Come at me, weather bro!
Frosty here and certainly cold enough for ice but didn't see any. Wind felt colder than ambient. Got stuck in a bunch of joggers from the SAS camp and had to weave a couple of times on frosty tarmac... Interesting!

I've learnt more than a couple of things through the years, very grateful! :D

Still don't think I have you on Strava though, want some kudos in exchange for commute spam?

It's quite a large topic, still i'll know a bit more after my first swap out. Cheers for your help.
Much can be said for getting to grips with it yourself! I bought an old £30 beater from a fb group which just needed a chain, cassette & pedals. Also stripped the screw threaded BB out and cleaned it. Did all the work & sold it on without really riding it for a minor profit to a friend. Lessons learnt where more than worth it!

I've had one of these in bits for months (other halfs old bike) as I hit a bit of a stumbling block getting the damn cassette off and identifying which size ball bearings it needs for the hub...

I'm already on 35mm Schwalbe CX comps on the winter machine but I got 2 punctures in around 60 miles so they are heading for the bin!
Ahhh, I had thought you where using bigger tyres already but wasn't sure just how wide! 38mm, plush! :D

Haha, doesn't take much to be more eloquent than you Johnny! ;)

Sweet CX build, tons of clearance? Which Hunts are those? Spoke count looks high for such a deep aero rim.

Read that sentence back to yourself then question how many spokes you need :D

Jonny, presume the user will be using this for adventuring rather than CX?

Haha yeah, oops. Guess my question was more 'why does he need an aero rim like that for CX'. The spoke count makes sense for CX but is not traditionally high with an aero/deeper road rim ;)

I don't really *do* strava. Got four followers, all mates I ride with.
I'll be your friend. /blush

a deeper rim is also a lot stiffer than a shallow one, and CX wheels are often subject to a wider range of adverse loads than road wheels. Also, some CX riders will insist that a deep rim sheds mud better....

Aero is king, doesn't matter what you're racing :D That and the fact they were 40g heavier but the same cost as 25mm :D
I'd have thought stiffness & light trumped aero when riding CX? You're not exactly riding in straight lines most of the time, nor going very quickly... *hides* ;)

I get stiffness, totally makes sense but hadn't fully appreciated mud shedding. Judging by the state of Pauls last pics of his muddy CX round mud shedding is vitally important! Couldn't you coat the rims in some kinda oil so the mud doesn't stick!? lol :D

EDIT: finally uploaded a picture of my Diverge with the Zipp course 30's (clean!)

Silicone Spray is a favourite for anti mud coating. You'd be surprised how many events have a longer open section, you're not always going in straight lines but able to get some speed up at least.

I don't know the exact model as I only fitted them but they look pretty and spin nice, not with the supplied disc lockring on the rear though!

Clearance wise it's pretty good, 40mm here and apparently can take 42mm with a guard.

It will do a bit of everything, we have a massive windfarm nearby that can be ridden and loads of mucky backroads.

Ahhh, yeah silicone would make sense, but not much it can do about large qualities of thick mud like on your MTB! :o

Really need to think about some frame protection on my Diverge, the clearcoat is looking pretty 'tired' in places and some of the colour is starting to fade. Anyone recommend any? Heard 'helitape' mentioned but as I'll be adding it to a frame that's already got marks, scuffs and wear is there a better option (besides getting it resprayed/recoated)? I wouldn't like to try and match the fluo greenyyellow to touchup. I did touchup with black & white nailvarnish on my alu Defy but unsure how safe a clear nailvarnish would be to use on carbon?

Clearance is huge considering those are 40's on there! Impressive!

Hunts are nice, what was up with the lockring? You mean the centrelock ring?

Weather forecast is rubbish tomorrow morning so my planned ~50 miles social ride outside is looking unlikely. :(

Really need to get the same done on Zwift, or more!

Am I right in thinking that my drop in mileage the last 3 weeks has really caused a loss in foundation/base. So my race efforts have been fatiguing me more? I'm feeling drained this week, even after only 60 miles.

Feel like I've lost a lot of 'top end' endurance, more than just the change in turbo has caused with the reduction in power/ftp. Really feels like a downward spiral at the moment! :(

Strava is temporarily down for me, so I cannot see your stats, but I'd hazard a guess that this "slump" might be a cumulative effect from how your riding has had to adapt to your new family member in recent months.

I've had a relatively poor last seven days myself, I think all the changes at work at a time of the year when my stress management is urine poor really hasn't helped, draining me mentally and physically... Yesterday was the first time I think I've done Zwift since last Friday and I've drastically reduced my hill reps on the way home of late.

Tomorrow looks fairly unpleasant here too, with light rain all day, with sunny but chilly days following... Might throw the Gravdals back on the 29er wheelset and kick myself out to Old Winchester Hill on Sunday.

For a time intensive workout of under an hour, if Zwift races aren't always at times when you could ride, I don't think you can beat hard workouts up to the radio tower (or mix it up with doing the London hill double)... I think the Mountain 8 route is more intense going on yesterday, ~8 miles to do the ~1880 feet climb (~9.5 miles for the other hilly route IIRC). If feeling particularly sadistic, try it without using a fan. ;)

Yeah I was looking at tomorrow morning's weather and also thinking it's going to have to be a Zwift morning instead.

Question is whether to do a race or just train. Hmm, decisions decisions......

Watopia and specifically radio tower repeats are the highest gradients on Zwift so most people grinding for Tron in quickest time possible will just repeat there. Although it's slow/hard going! Lots of others will just do Pretzel repeats as the gradient isn't as tough so VAM being higher meaning they can sweetspot it. Also if you group doing it the tow actually helps on the changes in gradient, on radio tower the speed is so low there's no benefit. #marginalgains

Anyway this belongs in the Zwift thread ;)

My fatigue/stress is quite low (due to lower volume) so I shouldn't be 'feeling slow'. Probably coming down with something again. Gah! :(

First day off since 29th December, had my biggest mileage/time in January since 2015 when I was in Majorca, so very happy with that considering two weekends I raced, which limits my time on the bike the two or three days before. Will aim to have an easier week next week in terms of riding stress but try to keep up the mileage, only 2 weeks until TT season starts :(

Got a Vo2Max and physical fitness tests planned in tomrorow at Trainsharp down in Lewes, with a view to getting a coach, shall let you know how much I throw up!

Wow, although explains why they supply their own lockrings! Bit of a design flaw of theirs if clearance of the lockring to axle cap is so close.

Think the rotors are further out? Hard to tell when building but may catch some out when swapping wheels.

6-bolt Rotors on my Zipps are in a different place to the CL ones on my Axis wheels. Even the front is a mm or so over. Although I was aware of it on the rear due to the juggling of rear endcaps to fit SCS! (2.7mm out). Not that I'm swapping wheels around regularly (thankfully)!
