Road Cycling

Waiting a response from Garmin support as to why my Edge 1000 won't connect via USB port after rides where it's been out in the rain for a while.....

Touchscreen triggers itself in the same sort of conditions or from drops of sweat on the screen, then can decide to lock the screen once it's moved onto a different screen or after it brings up the list of field choices as if you'd held your finger down to change how it was configured. Not voiced my complaint about this to Garmin. Yet.

Obviously I'm less than impressed with the $*%!ing thing :mad::mad:

Shout out to GP4000Sii very sticky tyres! Been brilliant on my halo wheels.
Managed to slash it with a sharp door edge when brand new though so very thin walls it seems, a bit of glue and old tube and hopefully I can past this winter with them.

You can't use it without your phone on you  Deal breaker for me if that is the case :(

No but your ride data is recorded within the app so should it stop or crash for any reason it serves as a back up. Stick with a Garmin if you are uncertain.

It will function fine without a phone on you but I can't fathom why in this day and age you would go out riding without a mobile phone

Comparing efforts from last nights ride, knocked 27 seconds of Whiteleaf for a time of 6:20. Went quite deep mind  Avg HR 177, Max HR 183. For reference my all time Max HR is 184 :o Safe to say I was blowing by the top so not the best way to pace it.

On super hard efforts like that, which aren't often, I usually find that my lungs (towards the bottom with the deepest breaths) feel almost a bit like they have abrasions/searing or are scarred ever so slightly, passes by the end of the following day. Safe to say I worked myself in to a pretty severe oxygen deficit on that one. Any one familiar with the physiology on this?

Tried the Rapha Pro Team Climbers Jersey for the first time yesterday  29 degrees when I set off, average 25, 23 by the time I got home. Performed brilliantly considering the conditions. Very much felt like I was just riding in bibs :) ;) Will be a God send for Marjoca. Have it in Light Blue (spearmint green) as well as Pink but the latter is a little bold :o

Good 'Bike Club' last night, total reverse to ride 2 weeks ago when my 2 friends dropped me hard 3-4 times.

We did things in reverse due to the wind direction, I did the 3rd leg and the 4 miles turned into 5 miles. I smashed the others on a couple of the hills having to reel myself in to wait for them - a bit of revenge for a couple of weeks ago! ;) Once onto the main road we got a slight tow from a tractor but the rough roads meant he pulled away (boo!). Heading back towards town Pocko was struggling on the biggest climb so I popped on the front to help (some headwinds). I did a strong pull soon afterwards but was fading badly at the end of it (couple of uphill drags up into headwind will do that!). Rested a little but Richie was starting to drop back so gave him a bit of a tow. As Pocko had pulled off the front I put a huge effort to draw him back, sat on his wheel and then smashed a sprint past him to the limit sign! Very happy but my sprint was badly timed/judged and not as long as I expected! Something to practice! ;)

I know someone who went on last year's and said some of the riding standards were extremely 'questionable'.

In addition, from what i've seen the route basically seems the same as the raid pyrenees/raid alpine.. which no end of people do supported with smaller numbers with support. The raid alpine i did the other week with Pyrenees Multisport was with a small group and a lot of fun - plus a lot better value IMO
Oh I wasn't commenting with the intentions of riding it, or even suggesting it was a good thing to do! Just how brutal it looked! Let's just say, the guy who's riding isn't my most favourite person in the club as I find his riding occasionally unsafe - jumping lights & overtaking cars etc. Doing something like it with a group of friends sounds much more enjoyable! :D

A big question I have is.. Does it need a phone with it to use or is it 100% self sufficient if I don't have my phone (unlikely) or there is no 3g etc - does it use any more phone battery than a 520/820 would??
It's not got a SIM for it's own connection if that's what you mean. Although I do recall someone here mentioning theirs had uploaded via home Wifi? My 810 works fine using BT to my android in non-3G areas. The ELEMNT uses BT and if it's that which is running your mobile's battery down then it doesn't really matter which device you'll use...
DCR has updated & done further reviews.
Linky? (lazy mode) :p
Nearly in to proper dark evening rides again :(
Yup! Was heading home after riding last night at 7.30pm and had to take my shades off... Another 30/45 mins and I'd want lights on! :o:(
I got out for 20odd miles this evening, principally taking in my own little 10 mile pseudo-TT run that I put together. This is the first time I've got less than half an hour on it, so I'm well pleased with that - my previous best time was 30:51 and today I got 29:56. It's a bit of a cheat as I get a flying start at it, but even so. So yeah, not much to shout about in the realm of TTing, but I'm happy with it. Garmin Connect tells me I averaged 220W for my best 20 minutes of it, which is about 3.1W/Kg.
Some good numbers Pete, well done! You do say you're 'not built for speed' but you've certainly got the power to do so, it's just a case of training it (if you wanted to)! :)

Someone who wanted an alternative to Rapha this could be worth a look.

Helicopter tape for protecting frame. Anyone use it? Ideally I want to protect my frame in the usual places from stone dinks, bike racking and cable rubs. Where from/which and how much should I be getting/paying for it?

Gave up in the end on heli tape. Just figured bikes gonna get chipped and the tpae always comes off eventually and looks naff.

I have some on my bikes, around chain area, where cables rub etc..

it does hold fine BUT looks naff on matt bikes :)

I got some from the bay, paid like £5 for 2 meter roll?

Another beautiful day, got up at 6am to get a couple of hours paperwork done, kids off to school at 8.30. The day is mine!!! yes!

8.5 miles later - two broken spokes in the rear wheel (Again!!!) and it's a call to the wife to come and pick me up........... FFS!:mad::mad:

Same wheel is only just back from last spoke break. I'm no porker that's for sure, but the roads around here are shockingly bad.

Looks like I'm going to go back to my bombproof Campag zonda's for now. DT Swiss rear off to the shop to get fixed again!!

what kind of wheel is it? where are the spokes breaking?

DT Swiss R23 Spline

Spoke snapped at the hub side of the wheel this time - last time it was the nipple/rim side. Been fine for about a 9 months but that's twice now in about 6 rides that one spoke/two spokes have snapped/broke.

It was my understanding that it could work standalone from my reading into them but that wasn't what you said in response to Shimmyhill's post, hence my surprise.

Most of the time I do carry my phone but I don't want to be in a situation where I have to have it on me. No need for

I've got those wheels. Came as standard with my Canyon. Apart from the rear wheel freehub being really load when freewheeling, I've found that they have been absolutely awesome wheels.

I've done around 5000 km on them. Never had them trued, never broken a spoke. They've just been really, really solid, roll well, wide rimmed so they bulge the tyre out nicely and are more comfortable. Must just be a bad batch, but I have read online that people have had problems with the hubs. I guess I've been lucky as mine have been perfect. Thought about upgrading them, but just can't justify it really.

"or is it 100% self sufficient"

The answer is it isn't 100% self sufficient because you need a phone for setup & on going customisation, to link it to wi-fi initially etc. You can ride without a phone though but it'll say it's failed to pair repeatedly :)

The  still stands for riding without a phone in case of an emergency and not really being a burden. I'm afraid :p

More reviews here (some discussion in comments) & here.

Ok thanks matey.
I got my Aeris inivisframed ... but doesn't look like he does road bikes :( Booooo.
It's some kind of 3M film - and it's awesome. Perhaps this stuff: http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/...Aftermarket/Our-Brands/Scotchgard-Pro-Series/
Thanks!

Figures, I'll just put some on the front of the downtube (stone chips) and along the chainstays (chain dinks from wheel changes). I did have one of these on my Giant, don't think I need quite so extreme as the MTB boys but something to protect my pristine paintwork before it's too late! ;)

I found my cheapy campags bombproof spoke and rim wise, just needed new bearings after 1 winter!
Time for a full rebuild with all new spokes, to proper tensions.
Rebuild, for sure, I'd also be looking for them to cover the cost (if under warranty) or the last guy who repaired them to do it for free as he obviously didn't tension the full wheel for it to go so soon...

You can't really dictate that everyone should carry a phone when riding, much of the riding I do is totally out of any mobile signal for a start. Providing you're prepared to get stranded or make your own way home then does it really matter in 99.9% of situations?

Much the same way you can't force everyone to wear a helmet... Or force everyone to use mudguards when group riding in the rain... Or to shoulder check before making random 90 degree turns infront of you... :o:p

Where am I dictating everybody ride with a phone? I'm saying that if you have the means to but do so without it is, in my opinion, daft.

All of those things are common sense, much like the former (riding with a phone). If people want to be idiots then they can get on with it as long as they stay out of my way :p

Regarding my previous posts, thanks for the replies regarding seating positions on my brommie :) I wanted to try this out last night but ended up cycling home with a friend from work. Will defo give it a go on my next ride though.

replacing one spoke is a low cost job, a full retension would add considerably to the cost

If it were me i'd replace the spoke and recommend the retension if it were needed. Another spoke popping isn't on me as the person who replaced the spoke
