Road Cycling

so i changed my Sportful Pordoi WS Jacket to an XL, better fit, i can see why they call it a PRO fit, its not as baggy as my Altura Night vision soft shell, its snug :)
one thing that is bothering me, so im not sure if i should keep it, is the fact that it isnt very long in the torso, the back is fine, just the front comes up short, you can see my jersey underneath because its that short

Grrrr.... my Max Flite Gel saddle is squeaking again. The method I used last time to sort it (3M oil pen to drip oil between the rails and plastic mounts) hasn't worked. I'll try more oil but I'm now debating whether to pick up a new saddle before my 100 on Sunday. If I do I fully predict my backside to be telling me that was a bad idea before I hit the halfway mark :p

I've never worn a jersey under a jacket before. With a base layer, you'd only see your bibs under the jacket.

Depends on the kind of ride tbh. For commuting in the spring/summer I'll usually be wearing a jersey with a thin jacket tucked into my pockets. For weekend rides where I need a jacket I wouldn't also have a jersey though.

Yeah, I'd put an emergency shell over a jersey, like one you put on before a mountain descent or if it started raining.

Depends on the temperature, but I never wear a jersey as a mid-layer which does help avoid the issue you are having.

The Sportful Pordoi WS looks like a standalone piece though, so it'd never be in a pocket and I'd never remove if wearing. Most well-fitted kit is cut short at the front so to avoid your jersey sticking out either don't wear one or have it under your bibs too.:D
 
Guys, just looking for some advice

Want to join the club and get a road bike. Been having coffee with BennyC today and discussing options and I'm leaning towards a used bike (Trek/Boardman) for £3-400, or buying a B-Twin for the same sort of budget? Would I be better off buying a new B-Twin rather than going used?

Will be my first bike, want something good but not too expensive in case riding isn't for me down the line, and something that I can use on a turbo later on if I eventually upgrade

Another gym rat joining the dark side ;)

Around the £400 mark you're in a bit of a weird place where you could get a good deal new but equally if you shopped around you could get a second hand bike that would be very good value. Personally I'd probably lean more towards a new bike (the Decathlon brand is a good one - as is Felt from Wiggle). For that price I'd expect Sora/Tiagra with an aluminium frame and a carbon fork. The cheap but important upgrades to do with such a bike are tyres and the saddle. Pro4s are a great choice for the budget conscious (or the Lifeline tyres discussed a page back). Saddle-wise the Charge Spoon is good for the price.

Seems to have some good reviews, and means I have the peace of mind of warranty etc. Rather than potential hassle of a used bike although I've seen some very nice used bikes at that price. But thinking for a first bike I should be sensible

EDIT - Just noticed it's a Sora as you recommended :)

im a little confused now, i would always wear a T-Shirt underneath a Jumper and a Jacket over the top (non cycling) in winter, i would wear a base layer, Jersey or two, soft shell (Jacket) over the top

Yup, those bikes are great for the money :) The only thing that is a shame is that it's a triple on the front. Not the end of the world but a little more hassle if you end up having to re-index the front.
 
My logic was that for peace of mind and for convenience as you have a store locally that something like the 520 offers not just good value as a bike but also a store fit, warranty and fresh consumables. So no need to drop a used bike into a LBS for a new cassette, chain, cables etc. And the fact you could be up and running within a few days.

I bought a used Boardman for £250 and sold it 2 years later for £200 though it did have a £90 service from a LBS shortly after purchasing including a new cassette, chain and cables. I agree there is probably more bike out there for the money but it'd be perfectly ample to begin with :) :cool:
 
Tbh that logic is pretty sound so whilst it's always worth looking around a bit I can't imagine finding anything more worthwhile. Definitely think about the tyres and saddle upgrades though.

The 540 is a much nicer bike and I'd definitely spend the extra £250 but for someone that is completely new it might be overkill...
 
Looks like I'm going for a 540. They have them in stock at the Oxford store so will get down there tomorrow lunch and if the size is right, ride away :D
 
I'll spec a 'gentle' first ride for you...
