Road Cycling

Well done for fixing it. I did offer my services to a cyclist that had punctured but he was OK as he was. Just as well as my tyre fitting skills have a lot to be desired. :o

I did a similar bodge when the hanger snapped on the brother-in-law's bike in France last summer but the chain was a lot slacker, so progress was even slower but we got home that day. Thankfully a passing car stopped and they had a Leatherman which we needed to cut the gear cable / outer.

I was searching for tools earlier and noticed the Topeak Mini PT30 has a knife blade. I already have one of them in the saddle bag on my other bike, but can't remember ever seeing it so need to look (properly) again.

I've got it now. Twenty quid postage?!? They're having a laugh...
The Strava freebie things tend to be that... Have seen them before from American companies who don't even ship across all of the US, nevermind internationally.

Anyway, the fun and games showed the one tool I'm lacking in my saddlebag is some sort of cable cutter / pliers. They would have been helpful to remove the mess of gear cable and outer I had to wrap round the pannier rack. Any recommendations for something small to fit in a saddle pack and hopefully not be super expensive?
Hope the hanger saved your rear mech! Glad you had a good ride before then and it didn't cause you to come down/off!

I carry a pair of mini foldable pliers with me. Non cycling specific but had a side cutter on them, also other things like a bottle opener and a blade. Have used them for removing thorns with the jaws/blade before multiple times.

I'm also carrying cable ties and a wrap of electrical tape, both of which would suit for securing cables/outers out the way. Can you tell I used to be a cub scout!

Haha sometimes that's the best way to learn! Just always be going too fast to hear their reply on a wet/cold day... ;)

Leatherman are a good shout but not that small or 'portable' (the Gerber Dime is another I've heard of and very similar to mine - think a swiss army pen knife, but with pliers in the middle)...

anyone with a garmin computer and sram AXS grouppo have the "weird" bug when shifter connects and garmin throws a low battery warning? mine seems to do it each time, sram app says shifter is 90%+ etc and works fine but garmin keeps claiming it's low battery on first connection only.

@Roady - good shout on the cable ties. I don't know why I've not not stuffed any in before. Digging out my emergency missing link out my saddle bag on Sunday reminded me I carry two tubes in it but in all the time of riding that bike it's been tubeless and I've never needed one tube, never mind two. So I'll ditch one tube to make space for a more bits and maybe something like the Gerber Dime for wire cutters / pliers.

When the hanger snapped on the B-i-L's bike in France last year, the derailleur cage bent and he asked if mine had. I thought I'd got away with it but just went out to the garage to check it.

At which point I realised there was no cage left :D  I presume it sheared when the hanger went and is in bits where it all went wrong.

A big thumbs up for Dolan Bikes. I e-mailed them Sunday night to check which replacement hanger I needed. I had a reply asking for photos at 08:40 on Monday, the right part confirmed later that morning, and it arrived from them today.

Yeeek, wow. Considering if that went into the spokes you did amazing not to come off - but is your wheel ok?!

It could even have been the arm which failed first then the chain pulling snapped the hanger. Either way would be a massive bang and impact to what it hit... Check cassette teeth etc!

Great to hear about Dolan!

I'll check the wheel over but I didn't spot any bent spokes when sorting the chain out. The last 10km or so home once single-speeded seem get to harder, with a stiff spot on each pedal stroke but at the time I put that down to chain tension / alignment and a lack of lube after all the messing around.

New cassette and chain landed today, new mech now ordered as well!

I do occasionally get the message pop up when the app says it's fine but never very regularly and it's been ages now since i had a false alert (Garmin 1030 Plus and Force AXS)

weird! I did two rides since getting my 1040 and both times it pops up with the message, it's no biggie just easier/nicer to have correct status on the device I use more, the axs app I rarely touch.

Just be aware it could be a low battery in one of your other sensors causing the low battery prompt which is misleading to what the actual 'cause' is - HRM/Cadence/PWM etc

Bit of a niche question for people but I have 12 speed di2 and a garmin 840 but I am pretty sure this happened on the 830 as well.

I have the hood buttons set to change data screens but when I click them too quickly it shows me a "blank data" screen. If I do them slowly its fine. Is this a bug or a feature? Any ideas?

Ignore. Seems that I can change it in the settings and it wasn't a bug. It was just trying to show something I didn't have on a data screen.

I checked them all, all healthy.. connect to my old wahoo and everything is happy. Just garmin being special.

reddit search returns a bunch of results with the same "problem" so I guess it's been around for a while.

Classic bit of IT request that. Say it doesn't work then immediately fix it yourself :p

  • Haha
Reactions: fez
Be safe out there everyone & get yourself checked out if you feel unwell cycling. Guy I've ridden with for many years on Zwift felt 'funny' after ZRL on Tuesday night. Later got himself down to A&E with heart pains and he'd had a heart attack post-race. Stent fitted in a blocked artery and recovering well thankfully, should be home today. :o

Ah just Garmin being Garmin. I suppose they're quite new to the cycling head unit game so still ironing out some bugs...  :D ;)

I googled it and had done before but no one else was having the same issue so I though I would just check one thing and it turned out that was exactly the thing I needed to check.

Haha, but did you turn it off & back on first? ;)

haha, I'll allow it.. seeing as they're new to the market.

I'd have used my wahoo but no sync to garmin is annoying as my watch is garmin and then having to log two things at the same time is frustrating. Already have to do that with zwift as the data from zwift -> connect is not "complete" so my health stats/tracking/recovery all go weird..

Don't know about you guys but I'm a massive fanny when it gets bellow 10c but I also prefer riding outside if the skies are blue and it's not raining.

I'm too cheap to buy dedicated winter shoes but even with my thicker winter socks and overshoe my toes still get cold. Yesterday in Aldi they had lambs wool shoe inserts for £3. Decided to give them a go today and have to say even with regular socks (would be too hard to wear them in the shoe with thicker socks) and an overshoe my toes remained really warm for the hour I was out.

Feels a bit weird at first but got used to it quickly. Could be worth a try

Have you tried some thin summer socks under a pair of 3mm neoprene socks?
