Robert Jordan’s fantasy epic The Wheel of Time coming to TV

Really getting into this series. Tempted to read the books now. Anyone who has read it, is it worth getting all 14 books of the series? Is it a worthwhile read?

Well worth it Read them twice plus listened to the audio books in the car on the way to work over several weeks/months (well worth it)

There are a few books in the second half which are slower paced but on the second read I never noticed that as much and really enjoyed those 7-10 books.

I think you could condense 7-11 into 3 books quite easily - path of daggers is far and away the weakest of the 14 for me.

Agreed but on second reading, I really enjoyed it. Maybe because on second reading I read the books one after the other whereas originally I was waiting a year (or more) between books.

I recommend the new audio readings by Rosamund Pike on Audible. She has read the first three books thus far, but she has done a great job.

I have the other versions, but found I enjoy the newer versions. Great production values and she does a great effort in bringing home some of the characters.

However, the other versions are competent. I just find their accents grating, and voices a tad robotic.

Change of subject, is it the last episode of season 2 tomorrow?

Can somebody answer my question (I'm not too concerned about spoilers) but others might be so...

Does Moiraine get her powers back at some point?

This Moiraine has very little in common with the books so they're no guide. And when I say very little I mean SFA.

Yes she does lose her powers in a much much more meaningful way/purpose and far later in the series and she does get them back but at pretty much the end of the 14 book sequence

Funny I was the opposite.
Having the 1st book read by her I struggled with her voicing of the males.
I guess its easier for a man to read the females than a female read the males?

I would suggest sampling both and picking.

Audible are pretty good on refunds if your struggling. I asked for a refund of the one with her reading and they did so no quibble.

I listened to the original ones at 1.25 speed, which I found was a far better speed.

I find with audible you need to really try not to pickup issues and think about the reading. Once you hear someone doing something its really hard to then unhear it.

I really prefer the readings with less emphasis on trying to voice many people, just read it IMO and get the emphasis to create exclamations etc. Plus of course not pausing where there is no pause in the book.

No, I prefer the new versions. As I said the original recordings sound robotic, in particular the male voice.

The only time they got emotional to me was at the final book and last few pages.

I think that's when they realised it was all over and no more paycheck.

But if everyone liked the same things, it would be a very boring world.

Going off on a tangent here - I really struggled with the American accent narration in the audio books at first.

I gave up and then went back a few years later, ultimately really enjoying them and starting the series again on Audible pretty much as soon as I finished.

At the end of The Fires of Heaven I decided to have a break and switched over to Joe Abercrombie's audio books read by Stephen Pacey. Jesus Christ, he's an amazing voice actor (is that the phrase?)!

I tentatively listen to Best Served Cold as it's my favourite standalone book of his, then rapidly did the other two followed by the First Law trilogy. Am on the final story of Sharp Ends now. Everything else I've listened to in between has fallen far short of his work, and the thought of going back to WoT isn't too appealing.

I agree to a point, The male narrator in the original audio books, I really struggled for the first 2 or 3 to accept him narrating it but once over that I thought he was excellent and by the end I loved his narration.

Yeah thats where I got them from. I see Pike's version is now on there as well.

I want to get the books but i dont want to subscribe? Whats the most cost effective way to get them? Do u lose the books u buy after you cancel their subscription?

Audible usually have a free trial for 30 days if you've never used it. No its like prime, once you buy its yours 'forever'.

I've had a quick gander as I always wondered how Audible works. It seems the audiobook price to buy is £33.24. It's a no-brainer to do the subscription really. £7.99 will get you one credit and you can spend that on the Wheel of Time 1 audiobook and it will be yours to keep forever.

At least I think that's how it works. It just means it'll take you more than a year to go through the whole collection (unless you pick the options that give you 2 credits a month).

I think if you start the trial by electing book 1 as your first book, you then get another credit straight away so you could get book 2 immediately but then it would be one book per month. Of course they are all on youtube anyway but not sure on the legality of that? I presume since some have been there for years, if there was any issue, youtube would have taken them down?

anyway, you can at least listen to some to see the style. As I said, the US narrator takes some getting used to but after a while he's actually quite good.

If you take a trial of audible, pay the first month and then go to cancel you might find they offer you either another free month or credit(s). You can often also get (much) cheaper audio books by buying the ebook and adding on the audio book. For example the WOT books are £5.99 for the kindle edition and you can add the audible for £3.99.
