Robert Jordan’s fantasy epic The Wheel of Time coming to TV

Thom Merrillin is one of my favourite characters from the book and its a shame they have dropped him from the TV show (unless they are going to bring him in later than the books). His story line is pretty major to the main characters.

I always imagined somebody like Sam Elliott playing Thom.

I don't think they've dropped him? Just not needed in season 2?

yeah its mainly 8-10 which could have been culled. Maybe 7 as well. 6 was excellent. Although on the third time reading them I enjoyed 7-10 as well and they didnt drag like the first time reading. Maybe I just appreciate the story more and read more things into them that I missed first tie around
After the TV series, it has made me value the books even more.

He was a major part of The Hunt for The Horn at a crucial stage.

Do you mean the great hunt? Because the only significant thing he did in that book was offscreen
killed king Galldrian

I think he's only in the book for two or three chapters in total. He was more involved in the eye of the world, but even then only for about half the book.

I'd say of all the things they've cut and butchered from the storyline this is about the least egregious, and actually not relevant to the hunt for the horn at all.
the civil war in Cairhien, which they will probably either leave out or approach in a different way in the show.

I would disagree. It's a major plot point. It adds depth to a character, and shows his capability. Which would have been good for that character's development. Instead, he is not present for the entire series.

Instead we have the focus almost always on Morraine Sedai. And her made-up family tree.

Great move Wheel of Time writing team.

Going back to Audible for a sec, they are running a 60% off promo for 3 months at the moment. Could nab each of Rosamund Pike's first three readings for £2.99 or thereabouts.

It's character development sure, but in the tv series they've already shown him being capable. Unfortunately it's just not possible to bring every bit of plot into the show, and this in particular is far from the most important thing they've cut. Going back to what you originally said; that Thom was a major part of the hunt for the horn is just...not true.

I hope they use him better in upcoming seasons. I think his character is hard to do justice, most of the time he's just sort of 'there' doing subtle stuff in the background. He's not front and centre very often. Works great on paper but I'm not sure the writing team have what it takes to bring him to life in the show tbh.

Is Moiraines family tree made up in the show? It's massaged yes, her older sister is now her younger sister and actually exists outside of Moiraines memories. Barthanes is a nephew rather than a cousin. Doesn't seem so awful.

We will just have to agree to disagree. Re Thom.

Instead we get the Moraine show? A similar argument would apply.

Rand Al Thor a "guest" star in his own story?

Anyway, lets see what Series 3 brings.

It was always going to be the Moraine show, she's the only A-B tier list actor in it, the rest are CW level. That's just the reality. GOT worked so well as an enseble show because they were drowning in top performers. Rings of Power is the same, it's a couple of C listers at best and then a load of CW's and planks.

I cant say this enough but the books are amazing! :D
Compared to the show, its like Lord of the Rings vs a dodgy novel from the bargain basement section of The Works.

There is a reason why Game of Thrones TV series went belly up after season 6, they ran out of material and lacked talent (the producers/writers).

Rafe Judkins had 14 books worth. He still made the wrong choices. The casting, poor quality actors (looking nothing like the books descriptions), apart from the obvious one. And that actress was in one of the worst Bond movies ever, Die Another Day.

It's made me appreciate the books far more now. RIP Robert Jordan, gone 16 years now.

Just finished the first book and thoroughly enjoyed it. So glad you guys recommended it. Starting the "The Great Hunt".

Will we ever see Thom Merrilin again? No spoilers pls just yes or no cheers.

Episode 6ish of season two and this has beaten me. I quite enjoyed the first season but it does send me to sleep. I sit watching it with the Mrs and I wake up at the end of an episode unable to recall when I fell asleep :D It's so slow and dull for me now if I put it on at 7PM I will be asleep by 7:15! Bailing out and my Mrs can watch it alone. I just don't find any of the characters interesting. The two main girls the names of which I haven't even bothered to learn annoy me with any screen time they have. I've found myself rooting for the dark side.

Oh no, these last three episodes are the best ones! So close to the end, don't give up now. :D
