Robert Jordan’s fantasy epic The Wheel of Time coming to TV

The budget for a show to replicate his world would be well past game of thrones in terms of scope and production.

Team Evil for the win :)

The budget for this abomination is already well past Game of Thrones.. I think if the appetite for fantasy tv series was there prior to GoT HBO eould have been a great choice, instead we got amazon :(

I always imagined this working as an animation.

Still quite the endeavor of course!
I remember a few of the fansites 10-15 years ago were hoping it would be an animated series, the likes of castlevania and invincible have show its entirely possible to make well made 'adult' animated series over the past few years.

That would have been awesome.

I watched a few episodes of the first series but not for me.

Read the books, done the audio series (was really rather good)

Still really enjoying the TV show, mainly because for me the books are very very overrated, enjoyable for sure but not the ultimate classic the fanboys ubernerds think it is.

Glad they didn't pick Magician though :)

Even without the affinity to the books I don't think its a very good tv program. Been stated numerous times but the acting is awful, the set designs are poor and the story isn't very good.

The fact you are glad they havent picked up Magician says it all really :) ultimately it would be a very boring world if we all agreed.

What's the budget for Season 2? The first season reportedly cost $80m, which isn't crazy for a recent show.

Rings of Power cost something like $450m, Citadel cost $300m, Secret Invasion cost $212m, House of the Dragon $200m. Other recent shows which cost more: The Sandman, One Piece, The Crown, The Boys, all of the Marvel MCU TV shows & Star Wars shows. The final season of GoT cost ~$90m, and that was only six episodes (more like $110m when adjusted for inflation).

The closest comparator to WoT from a budget perspective is The Witcher. Similar budgets. Similar array of filming locations. Both shows rely on CGI. The main difference is that The Witcher has a small main cast vs the ensemble of the WoT. Arguably, the results are fairly comparable - shows which could have been better.

The Game of Thrones budget was tight during the first few seasons (and yes, lower than WoT S1's budget, even when adjusted for inflation), but rose considerably once they increased the number of filming locations & started to need more CGI. HBO did an excellent job with the GoT budget, but arguably it's the exception more than it is the rule.

Old school book series.

Where it upsets people these days as the woman are just woman and not the Hero`s or main characters, its my favourite fantasy series read multiple times.

Does it get any better? I am about half way through The magician after seeing so many people rave about it and I am finding the story boring, cliche and uneventful so far. WoT was far superior IMO. But will stick with it.

Magician is a superb book as are the rest of the series. It’s also fairly old now so what is now cliche wasn’t necessarily the case back then! I do remember that it takes a wee while to kick off particularly if you’ve got the re-edited edition which the word count up considerably

@Greebo been loving the books. they are really good. The TV shows are ok but doesnt nearly do it justice. I have only finished the prequel and now onto the Book 1 but i really immersed in it now lol.
The first 5 are great, then they drop off a cliff except for a few excellent moments. When Brandon Sanderson takes over it picks up again and I enjoyed the last book immensely.

Maybe my memory is fuzzy and that one was good also! But I do know that Books 8-10 were awful and hard to get through.
I think Jordan knew he was on to a winner and slowed the pace down a great deal after 5 or 6. And we as readers got annoyed with the slow down. I for one got really bored with the Faille kidnap story. And the search for the Bowl of Winds?

I think The Hunt for The Horn and The Shadow Rising are the best books.

Anyway RIP The Hunt for the Horn synopsis because the TV series really messed up the plot...

Near the end of the first book and the story has been amazing. Absolutely loving it. I just wish Thom Merrilin was in the show.

I hope he not dead :(

I disagree I love Book Six! Lord of Chaos! Let the Lord of Chaos rule...
yeah its mainly 8-10 which could have been culled. Maybe 7 as well. 6 was excellent. Although on the third time reading them I enjoyed 7-10 as well and they didnt drag like the first time reading. Maybe I just appreciate the story more and read more things into them that I missed first tie around

Thom Merrillin is one of my favourite characters from the book and its a shame they have dropped him from the TV show (unless they are going to bring him in later than the books). His story line is pretty major to the main characters.

I always imagined somebody like Sam Elliott playing Thom.

He's going to be in season 3. There was a bit of annoyance I believe as he has a guitar and not a harp and flute
