Robert Kubica has suffered "serious injuries"

Improve car or barrier safety. Understand what happened.

It was polish authorities that recreated it. Can't find why, all I can find is the same short paragraph about it. Others say skoda themselves recreated it.

We're not really sure why, but a Skoda has been sacrificed to recreate Robert Kubica's near-fatal February rally crash that threw his future into question. Using a completely stock Skoda Fabia, they ran the car into an Armco barrier at about the same angle and clip Kubica was going (you may recall that this same crash was already subject to the computer simulator treatment).

Simply put, the results are horrifying. This video proves suggests that not only was Kubica extremely lucky during his Andora incident, but the structural improvements to his race car almost certainly saved his bacon. Click past the jump to see the video for yourself.

It'd be great for him to return next season, I think he may well be back then.

Whether or not he will be back at his best is another matter, even without the injuries a year out of racing isn't going to help.
 
That video is pretty shocking, the barrier seems to do the exact opposite of what I'd expect it to do. Instead of distributing the impact along the length of the barrier and 'bowing' into a curve it seems to buckle into a 'point' around which the front of the car wraps itself.

Quite scary really.
 
Least he's not trying to rush back for the end of this season as was muted earlier, really don't think that was realistic.

Imagine by next January/February he'll be in much better shape and fitness but gonna be tough, imagine Renault will have to get him out driving an old car or one of their smaller series cars to get back up to speed seeing as testing time is so limited now.

Still not convinced he wont be another Karl Wendlinger though.

Or Olivier Panis. Went from challenging Jacques Villeneuve to struggling to find a way around Pedro Diniz in an inferior car.
 
Robert Kubica has told his Renault team that he will not be ready to start the 2012 season following his accident at the start of this year.

The Pole said that, despite his recovery going well, it is too early to commit to the 2012 season.

"Even if I've been working very, very hard over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the conclusion that I am not yet certain to be ready for the 2012 season," said Kubica in a Renault statement.

"I have called the team and I have informed them of the situation. This was a difficult decision to make, but it is the most reasonable one.

"I also know that LRGP need to prepare for next year, and further extending deadlines would not have been the right thing to do. On a personal level, my recovery is still very encouraging and my doctors keep being impressed. I just need more time, as I want to be 100 per cent ready before I commit to anything driving related.

"Finally, I regret not having been able to provide more news and not having appeared in the papers, and I thank my friends of the media for understanding that this has been the best way for me to cope with what has been the most difficult period of my life."

Renault said Kubica can now walk freely, and move his hand and elbow. The team also said that it "remains committed to helping Robert as much as possible in his recovery process."

Renault said it has a test car ready for Kubica and a crew on stand-by in case the Pole is ready to drive again.

The team also stated that it is in talks with Kubica's management about renewing his contract for the 2013 season, with his current contract expiring at the end of next year.

if he was in the Renault next year, then I would agree. However, if he is out all of next year too I can see Ferrari passing on him for 2013 as to much of an unknown risk.
