Rome 2 : Total War

AI is still dumb

The only thing stopping me playing at the moment. All the other bugs/performance issues I can deal with but I haven't had a single battle where the AI is even remotely clever yet. They just head straight for the objective point regardless of unit type, they send horses into spears, run back and forward on the spot whilst my ballistas/catapults destroy them etc etc - and that's on the hardest difficulty! The campaign map they are just as bad, attacking my main army in a fortified city with 3 or 4 mob and some slingers.

Hopefully something will be done with the patches, but I'm tempted to reinstall the origional or MTW.

I keep going back to it but it feels like i'm just going through the motions and trying to get it over with.. Can anyone relate to this? (even though theres nothing to really get over with in Total War..).

I've started auto resolving more battles now, just to keep playing.. :\. Many where it's one stack of units vs a whole garrison.. what is the AI thinking? Can't it regroup?

That's exactly how I feel now. :(

I'd like the AI to absolutely hammer me just once or even make a battle mildly competitive for a change. I keep even giving them chances by not even moving my army once it's set up.

I've had a few hour sessions over the last couple of days. Playing on very hard campaign with radious mod so that part is a challenge as only played a few Shougn 2 battles since the original Rome which I only put a few hours into but i'm coping.

However, the last 3 times i've ended up in a battle heavily outnumbered but get to the turninng point and I am going to win and the battle crashes or bugs :(

Happened today defending one of my unwalled cities, me 1200 men vs 1700 + 1200 on boats reinforcing, knew it was going to be hard as only just taken the city and lost a lot of my army taking it but managed to get the power balance to 80/20 and notice that 3 of the AI ships loaded with troops are about 3 feet away from the beach but not landing, so send my slingers down to provoke them, but no can't attack when they're in that position. Ended up waiting for 15 minutes on FF, leaving the capture point, moving troops away/towards before I just quit to windows. Roll on the big '100 fix' patch.

I've very briefly played, I don't mind the graphics being underwhelming, I mind the game feeling unfinished and the battle's feel very poorly done.

I actually regret purchasing this as it is and wouldn't recommend it until it's 'fixed'.

Indeed. Had a fair few instances of enemy armies attacking a settlement with only one unit. Not only is it a waste of time but the battles are just daft anyway, fast forward moving my troops across for an entire side to rout within 2 minutes of actual fighting.

I don't really see why they needed to changes things from Empire onwards, thought they had the mechanics and style pretty much sorted in that game.

I'm at the point now where I have familiarized myself with the game, a few mods have improved things, but I'm bored with it now. Time to put it aside until it's finished.

I think i'll enjoy getting into Empire for the first(with Darth mod) time more than this disappointment.

Completed the game as Rome, 64 hours played, military victory. Lots of fun. Lots of bugs. Will be an even better game after some patches and mods.

Think I'll start as Macedon. Funny, in 64 hours I never once saw the computer using phalanx formation.

Did you use historical bonus objectives? I played as Macedon first and going for bonus objectives made a completely (although harder) course of events. I pulled my forced to protect Epirus early game (otherwise it gets demolished by sparta/athens/rome). Then made it ally then client state. With my support it expanded way into west, which allowed me to expand east. then we took over romw together. Was an amazing experience.

I did a lot of the bonus objectives but didn't manage to get them all. I won as I was taking some of the provinces needed (Suebia and Silesia). Also it seems client states don't count towards the objective, you have to own the province yourself, so I would have needed to go back and take Ireland from my client state.

What a bugger fighting in Germany is, attrition everywhere, just moving through some of the tundra can result in 25% attrition losses. Losses to artillery units seemed especially high. Artillery is of course way too good in this. Ballista firing every 12 seconds or less is mad.

Given up, decided to shelve this game for at least a month till it gets sorted and/or modded..

Got robbed of an awesome last stand on an AI I was sieging when it decides to send the full defending army stack to sea and run away leaving just a tiny garrison to defend its final city...

It's annoying, there are some epic moments I've had but a lot of it is completely pants on head.

CPU core 1 is a major performance bottleneck

Entered into Senate Civil War (HARD Setting), 10xfull stacks appeared from nowhere and started to march on my towns. One force totalled 6000 and my force with garrison was approximately 4000 strong in defence. I looked at the auto resolve stats "no possibility of winning" so I had to manually fight on the battlefield...

Outcome was that I won because of better strategy (funnelling enemy into narrow streets with missile infantry backing up melee defence spears and celt warriors with praetorians as a last defensive line, But it lagged quite a bit!!

Everything was maxed out in graphics settings @ 1920x1200

I had a quick look at gpu usage max 75%, vram was 2696Mb and the 4.7Ghz Ivy was 100% core 1, 50-60 on all the other cores!!!

I believe that over use of core 1 is causing frame rate drop and microstuttering. Ultimately this is a coding issue as the work load should be across all 4 cores without maxing out an indivual core.
