Rooney has just been stretchered off. OH NOOO

You mean you can't replace him with a show pony?

I don't think we have anyone that can do the job Rooney does. He links up, he dictates play, carries a goal threat, has strength and speed...

We just don't have anyone else that can do it.

Having said that, if we're talking goal threats up top in an England shirt I'd have no problem with Vassell going. He works hard, he has the pace and he's a goal threat. Unfortunately Vassell is Owen's replacement, not Rooney's.

I'm lost. Who is this wonderful goalscorer you're both edging towards?

How many English strikers are available to Sven atm if all fit?

Crouch
Owen
Rooney
Beattie
Bent
Bent
Fowler
Vassell
Andrew Cole
Ashton
Heskey
Defoe
Harewood

I may have missed a couple. Feel free to chip in with more.

Now, we know Crouch, Owen and Rooney will go if they are going to be able to play during the tourney. Where is this magical goal threat with power and pace coming from?

We're going to play 4-4-2 & I'd like to see Bent given a chance up front with Owen, the 4-4 are nailed on, more injuries excepted.
He knows where the goal is & has a bit of grit about him. Crouch, Defoe & Vassell don't.
But that's yet another one of those obvious ideas Sven won't try as it'll be Crouch.

Robinson
A. Cole
Terry
Rio
Less Ugly
Downing/Lennon
Lamps
Gerrard
SWP
J. Cole (behind Owen)
Owen

Is what I'd really like now, lots of invention & goals in it:)

With the formation above I'm thinking Cole, Carrick and Beckham playing 3 across and Gerrard and Lampard playing in front of them, with Owen up top. Suppose its almost a xmas tree formation.

You could drop Gerrard back alongside Carrick and play a flat four and push Lamps up top though.
I like the idea of the xmas tree formation but would swap Cole with Lampard and play a narrow 3 in the centre (as with Ashley Cole LB Lampard wouldn't need to be out on the left), Beckham would prefer it as well, as he prefers to play more in side. But if they were going to play 4-4-1-1 then i would be suprised if Lampard played behind Owen, I would have thourght it would have been either Gerrard (who can and has played there quite a bit over the last couple of seasons) or Cole with Gerrard on the left.
Like ive said earlier, i would have thourght that during the group stages they will stick with a 4-4-2 with Crouch up top and they will only change to a 4-5-1 (or 4-4-1-1) in the later stages if and when they come up against a team that plays with someone off the strikers (ie the need to have someone sitting) or with a player who plays in front of the defence.

Thing is, Lampard is a better attacking midfielder than Gerrard, and Gerrard is a better all-rounder. So having Lampard in the hole makes more sense to me.
The only thing is you rarely see a player like Lampard play in that role; its usually see either a technically excellent player (Kaka, Zidane, Ronny, Bergkamp etc) or a physically powerful player (Like Rooney or Gerrard). I just don't think that posistion will suit Lampard (Like it didnt for Scholes for Utd few years back) where as Gerrard is more of a safe bet playing there (ie he has shown he can play there, where as Lampard is unproven).

Lamps has scored 20 goals this season from CM, more often than not playing in an advanced role behind 1 striker, isn't that enough proof he can do it?
Lampard doesn't/hasn't play(ed) behind a striker, he's been playing as CM and breaking from deep.

You haven't watched Chelsea enough this season then.
The only time he played 'deep' was when Essien was out & Eidur played advanced.
Ive seen every game (either live or highlights) he has not played as a 2nd striker (like Rooney plays) he has been playing as a attacking midfielder. There is a complete difference to the posistion Rooney plays and the posistion Lampard plays. Im not saying he can't play there but he's untried (everyone thourght Scholes would be perfect for that role and it didn't work out) where as Gerrard has played as a 2nd striker this and last season.
