Rooney has just been stretchered off. OH NOOO

i think losing rooney is a huge loss for us and would be a huge loss for any team, but I dont think we need to alter outr style of play.

For me Joe cole could play the rooney role just in behind owen, he has pace, strength and the trickery to make it work.

robinson
cole
terry
ferdinand
neville
beckham
king
lampard
??????
cole
owen

the problem area for me is still left wing.

Anyone think it could be a publicity stunt so that other big rival countries think hes not going to be fully fit and then he turns up and runs the show?
This has happened before with Beckham, the amount of times he gets "injured" before an international is untrue. Hes always looking for the "oh my gosh I hope Becks is fit" talk.

If the injury is that serious then judging by what JR said on sky yesterday then he wont be anywhere near full fitness cos it can take up to bout 3months in some cases.

He cant finish though, and that is the problem.

Regardless of what he did on saterday, i agree with the guy on the sunday supplement in that i wouldnt want Joe Cole taking a shot from 10 yards out in a match we needed to win.
Just like Defoe, both have too much a tendancy to blaze shots into row z instead of passing the ball into the net.

Hell i would even rather have Beckham playing behind a striker because the one thing he can still do well is finish.

maybe but he doesnt have pace or trickery to be able to play the role, joe cole may not be the best finisher in the game but i would rather have him playing behind owen than any of the alternatives.

Presuming Rooney doesn't make it......
Against TT, Paraguay and Sweden they'll proberly play 442 with Crouch up front. Then depending on who they get in the knockout rounds they will more than likely go with Gerrard behind Owen and play a defensive midfielder alongside Lampard.

I think a Rooney injury could be a blessing in disguise for England in the sense that Lampard & Gerrard playing in midfield together doesn't work, they are both too offensive and need someone like Carrick or Parker to provide defensive qualities. Could be a diamon formation now with Joe Cole at the top, Carrick at the back and gerrard / lampard either side.

I think though the best option for later stages of the competition is to play Gerrard in Rooney's role and play Lampard in midfield with Carrick. Gerrard is good in the whole but then agin he is better coming from deep and running into space, Joe Cole could be the best alternative but I just don't think Lampard & Gerrard in CM works.

You've only named 4 players there, so who's the replacement for Rooney?

Well depending on the system played the obvious direct replacement for rooney would either be gerrard or joe cole. Rooney's role is to pull the strings and make things happen between midfield and attack. Joe Cole could do this, or if Sven wants to revert to his diamond formation then he could do so with Owen & Crouch up top and Cole at the head of the diamon.

I think playing Gerrard & Lampard together in midfield is a big mistake without having a proper defensive midfielder alongside them. Lampard would be ordinary without Makalale and Gerrard would be ordinary without Sissoko / Alonso doing the dirty work behind them. I don't think its any kind of coinsidence that both Gerrard & Lampard have scored so many goals this season because they have had less defensive work to do and have proper defensive players playing alongside them.

Carrick also has the ability to pick out some quality passes from deep which is always a good thing with Owen on the pitch. With Rooney not playing I think England will have a more balanced midfield and the attack should sort itself out. Even with the forwards not scoring, if BOTH gerrard and lampard are FREE to go forward and support the forward play then them two in their current form will definately chip in with their fair share of goals.

So you would drop Beckham?

ledley king has the same injury and hes hoping to start rehab in 2 weeks. the injury was sustained only 2 weeks ago!

Ledley King is looking to step up his rehabilitation in the next fortnight and is still hopeful of making England's squad for the World Cup finals.

The Tottenham stopper is currently a doubt to feature in this summer's tournament after fracturing his metatarsal against Everton last month.

King ventured onto the White Hart Lane turf following Spurs' final game of the season on Sunday, albeit on crutches.

Spurs issued an upbeat bulletin on King last week and the classy defender is hopeful of being able to make the trip to Germany.

"It's not feeling too bad at the moment," King said on Sky Sports News. "So I have got fingers crossed.

"I have been out for two weeks now and hopefully in another two weeks it will have healed completely and I can start thinking about the World Cup again."
