Rosberg retires with immediate effect

Yeah so on the Nico retirement thread, the Nico haters are out in force, even to the point of scripting theories of his demise.
Haters truly will hate.

I find it an interesting decision to retire, but I wonder if given the chemistry between Nico and Lewis, that Nico simply couldn't be bothered putting up with the stress and the animosity from the other side of the pit anymore.
Wouldn't be surprised if the other sulk now is nice as pie to him going forwards.
It was an interesting tweet he published after he would have found out, almost an olive branch.

You do understand that everything bad between Nico and Hamilton, was NIco's fault? Nico cheated at Monaco, Nico hit Hamilton in Spa, Nico forced Hamilton off the track in Spain, Nico forced Hamilton off track in Austria.... which incident was there in which Hamilton cheated in qualifying or hit Rosberg off the track?

He couldn't be bothered to put up with the stress and animosity... which to fix would only require him to stop hitting his team mate.

That made me laugh, a lot ;-)

Toto’s reaction…

December 2, 2016 by Joe Saward

Toto Wolff has been commenting on Nico Rosberg’s shock decision to quit F1.

“This is a brave decision by Nico and testament to the strength of his character,” he said. “He has chosen to leave at the pinnacle of his career, as World Champion, having achieved his childhood dream. The clarity of his judgement meant I accepted his decision straight away when he told me. It’s impossible to capture the essence of a person in a few short words. But Nico has a special combination of natural talent and fighting spirit that have brought him to where he is today.
“Throughout his career, people have thought he was on a golden path to success just because his father was a World Champion; in fact, I think in some ways that made the challenge greater – and meant he had to fight even harder with the weight of expectation on his shoulders. With Mercedes, Nico has been a relentless competitor, bouncing back from tough times in an inspirational way, and he earned the respect of the sport with his tenacity, his fighting spirit and his grace under pressure.
“Since 2010, he has poured competitive energy into our team and we have grown stronger because of it. We simply say ‘thank you’ for the incredible contribution he has made to our success, alongside two of the all-time great drivers, Michael and Lewis. For the team, this is an unexpected situation but also an exciting one. We are going into a new era of technical regulations and there is a free Mercedes cockpit for the seasons ahead. We will take the necessary time to evaluate our options and then find the right path for our future.”

I think Rosberg set out to do what he wanted, now wants to enjoy life with his family, young child, and has mentioned what happened to Schumacher as a wake-up call ie. life is short. He knows how hard he worked, how lucky he got, but points are points, and he retires having achieved his goal of winning the WDC. The difference is that Hamilton wants multiple titles, but I think Rosberg only wanted the one, and that was enough for him.

Means there is no one as F1 champion this year to promote the sport, or the Mercedes team that won it.

He knows he not a top driver, just a good driver in a great car and this year he's had great fortune with reliability where his team mate hasn't.

This is as good as it's going to get for him and he knows it, so it does make sense from that point of view.
