Rosie Jones

Not read the whole thread, but I can't stand Rosie Jones, if she's on the show I won't watch it. I admire her for achieving what she has with her disability, but I just don't find her funny, similar to I can't stand Ricky Gervais when he's acting, he plays every character the same regardless and he's just unfunny with it, the office was good but I think that was more the other characters that made it than Ricky, I couldn't stand him then either. That said I did find his last standup routine quite funny (not Armageddon, that's rubbish just same stuff rehashed).

Like a few others in here, for me it's less about "what" she is saying (which could be amazingly funny or utter dross, IDK) and more about "how" it is said as her condition means I struggle to clearly understand her a lot of the time, meaning even "good" jokes are lost or missed and therefore I don't consider it to be "ableist" if I don't want to pay to entertained by someone I struggle to understand, in the same way that I wouldn't pay money to see someone tell jokes in German or Arabic or Chinese etc.

I don't mind fully admitting that I'm one of these new words 'ableist', I don't like her as a comedian because I can't understand one word she says and I've given up trying to strain my brain trying to work it out.
It shouldn't be my job to sit there reversing the recording to finally get what she said.

People don't have a choice if they can understand her or not.

There is real ableism/discrimination in the world were a person could help but choose not to.

I agree with this FWIW, but it’s a fine line.

Separately my perception is that she gets a disproportionate amount of abuse compared to her profile (QED this thread perhaps) but I’d be interested to see whether that’s the reality, and also how it compares to other female comedians.

The only thing that is a shame about this thread is how many people feel guilty about saying they don't like her because she has a disability.

I don't feel guilty at all, neither should you.

Shes about as funny as the tedious idiot that plays Philomena Cunk.... how the hell we can go from Blackadder , Red Dwarf & Monty Python to Mrs Browns Boys, Philomena Cunk and sympathy comedians in a few decades?? sorry state of affairs!!

When only fools and horses stopped it went downhill imo.

No one should feel guilty if they don’t like her comedy.

The challenge is that the difference between criticism and prejudice masked as criticism is basically just one of motivation. It’s important to be cognisant of that even if your own intentions are good.

Why dont they just do the same as a person where English is their 2nd language - Subtitle the individual.

If the regular English speakers cant understand her, whats the chance someone new or not comfy with the language even understands her?

Plus if she had subtitles, we could all get to the joke in a suitable time frame. Who knows, some of us might even enjoy her jokes if we didn't have to do quantum physics first.

There was subtitles but when it is a live recording having subtitles ruins it when everybody is being shown, if it was just her then maybe not as bad.

A programme me and the wife watch together is First Dates Ireland and we have to put the subtitles on or else we miss most of it - are we being ableist or does it only apply to Rosie?

Were we being ableist when we had to turn subtitles on for that old bloke in Clarkson's Farm?
