Rosie Jones

Frankie Boyle’s jokes were always distasteful so I can see why many don’t appreciate him.

IMO he used to be fantastic in the 00’s but since then he’s become very political and selective in who he aims his jokes at. He’s also clearly deliberately toned his act down and now only picks approved ‘safe’ targets/topics (brexit, trump, right wing politicians/parties, Israel, etc) he knows won’t get him into trouble with the political factions he supports and the tv stations he regularly works for.

It’s clear he’s only doing it now as a day job and to push politics whereas before there was a genuine sharpness in his jokes and an edge to his humour where anything was fair game if he found it amusing.
Do you really mean he jokes about things that offend you now so you don't like him?

Watch his older material and it’s very clear that his entire act is now based around building a career path and pushing political messaging at channel4/the BBC rather than actually telling jokes or entertaining people. You can see from his manner he no longer even laughs along at his own jokes anymore.

He’ll fit right in on those TV stations though as that’s what everyone else on them does…..

News Just In : Shock as comedian uses comically inept politicians as material

If the people involved weren't so tragically useless, they might not get picked on by the mean comedians, and as a bonus the country might not be in such a mess.

Frankie Boyle who got famous for his edgy jokes on BBCs 'mock the week' is now pandering to the BBC to appear on the BBC?

Hmmm

That’s exactly the point I’m making and why he’s no longer funny!

Because his entire act is now literally based around pandering to BBC/channel 4 sensibilities so he can keep himself in a job.

The problem is he’s not impartial in targeting inept politicians.

He’s somehow missed the opportunity to tell a single joke about the SNP. I wonder why that is….presumably because they’re supremely competent and there’s nothing to criticise them for…..

Or maybe he had kids, got older, evolved his act etc?

Those SNP jokes were obvious deflection to avoid commenting about the party members, recent scandals or its policies. Contrast those comments to how he’d joke if it were about other Westminster parties.

You can’t argue it’s prudent to keep yourself in a job by tailoring your act to your employer. Whether it’s as funny though is debatable….

I saw Frankie Boyle at Edinburgh Fringe a few months ago and he still had some pretty controversial jokes in his act. He had a whole chunk about cancer patients for example. Though there were more political/current affairs type jokes in there, I agree - he's probably just developed his act as he's matured.

Only the audience can dictate whether they like the material or not.

Is it any different to bands changing musical style as they grow up?

You can't expect people to stay the same and churn out the same material 20 years later. That's what a lot of the older "blue" comedians do and they just become stale and dated, but do cater to a certain audience who like the stereotypical mother in law jokes - chubby brown etc.

Frankie Boyle was funny back when he was far more ruthless and didn't spare anyone. I find him boring now.

As for Rosie Jones - I don't watch TV anymore but from the clips I've seen, I just can't understand a word she's saying. I watch a lot of films/shows with subtitles as it is now so have no chance in all fairness.

There seems to be a trend these days in saying everyone can do everything, which is clearly not the case.

I feel sorry for Rosie because she's been gaslighted and believes that.

I blame the people encouraging her. They are making matters worse for her.

I've known some people like this and they can be understood in a one on one situation, and after knowing them for a while. But I've been in situations were a cousins friend has the condition and while my cousin could understand him I was sitting next to them and couldn't understand anything.

Was this all a ruse to get some PR for her tour and to sell tickets......

Honestly, I suspect this whole EDI reverse discrimination many media outlets and companies indulge in is purely as a means of creating publicity.

Ticket sales for a mediocre comedian not up to scratch. Why not manufacture a disability scandal on social media?

Viewing figures for the latest Dr Who falling like a stone due to weak scriptwriters and poor storylines. Make the Doctor black/gay and throw mud at anyone who criticises the show.

Seems like an effective tactic to boost your audience and avoids the effort involved in having to actually produce decent shows and comedy material!

The ridiculous urge to defend egregious hypocrites like Boyle....who made their livings off 'shock' humour only to pull the ladder up behind them.

Isn't it amazing that he just managed to change his views just in time to keep up with the latest social manias and taboos.....

It’s tricky because comedy should essentially be a meritocracy where the funniest people are in turn the most successful, but that is clearly not the case with certain comics achieving baffling levels of popularity or enduring long beyond the point they cease being funny. In theory it should be self selecting but it clearly isn’t. Certain comics get pushed by broadcasters while others struggle for airtime. Rosie Jones is just another in that bracket. As a result, I think people should be free to say they don’t find her funny without being accused of being discriminatory, but equally should give that criticism without straying into personal attacks.

I don't mind fully admitting that I'm one of these new words 'ableist', I don't like her as a comedian because I can't understand one word she says and I've given up trying to strain my brain trying to work it out.
It shouldn't be my job to sit there reversing the recording to finally get what she said.
