Rover Coupe?

If it leaks oil, it doesn't mean it needs a HG change :) I know cars that leak oil and go on a further 100k without a HG change.

The oil leaks do stop after being fitted with a Klinger HG though, so I'd check it has one of those.... front right of the block, there should be a little metal tab stuck out.

As I said to you on msn mate, he did abuse the car a bit, it might be a gamble!

Get the d series or the turbo 220. It says the engine code on the V5, they did supply the proper DOHC d series at first but it was so good that it challenged Rover's own 2 litre engine so they dropped it for the lower power one to make their own engine look better :(

The Coupe never came with an DOHC (A8/A9) in the UK they shipped to Europe in left hand drive form but never to the UK. Any right hand drive DOHC Coupe will be a transplant. :)

I've only ever seen one original T series HG that didn't leak, they all do it and it doesn't cause any problems at all :)

You might be right there but they came with the 216 originally then ?

How would one search for a 220 turbo in the local area?
Edit, never mind found one on auto trader by typing in coupe, a very nice blue one, trade, £1500, 80k miles, but i cant get insured on one 19/1NCB.

Bunch of nice guys, for instance, I got a full pair of front calipers plus pads for £20 delivered! You cant go wrong mate.

Bargain ;)

Rilot, the other cars you've posted all appear to be sportyish so as mentioned before, this leaves you with three options, imo:

  • 1.8VVC (K-series)
  • 2.0 16v NASP (T-series)
  • 2.0 16v Turbo (T-series)

The VVC does come with the 'mk3' style dash, which is the latest/modern looking one, whereas you're stuck with the former, mk2 style with the other two. You could call me a Rover enthusiast but I wouldn't personally be comfortable buying a K-series of any shape or form. 'When' seems to be the case, rather than 'if' in terms of HGF. Shame really, that dash is so tempting...

I would strongly urge you not to buy her the turbo because you may find yourself, unashamedly, posting back here how great it is :p

I've intentionally left out the Honda engine because I believe from the vibe I'm getting, it would be too slow for your application i.e. the missus's right foot welded to the floor.

Full leather and A/C were available on most models but are not common. They do all suffer from wind noise around 70MPH and expect a healthy dose of rattles and squeaks. The boot is quite large but the opening is restricted.

The best colour is, quite clearly, Tahiti Blue :)

Ah, but the trick is to convince her that she does like it.

Thats the point. They usually make snap judgements based on... stuff that doesnt matter. Once they actually have one/drive one/whatever they like them.

Well sometimes :p

Yeah, 3dr 216 gtis are DOHC d16s and the 5dr gtis are either DOHC or SOHC d16s

They didnt use the DOHC at all later it seems, Ive got the 3dr 1993 216 GTi and its a SOHC unfortunately. I even have a spare DOHC engine but I lack the skills & tools to transfer it all.

I think it has to be the turbo coupe or nothing anyway, to go all the way from a 750i to a little 1.6 even a good one would be a bit much

Why not an E36?
I hate them, she hates them.

The main reason for not considering a BMW is that we've had so many of them over the years. She wants something different.

She's looking at putting a bit more cash in now so we may have £3k for her.

Short list:

Rover Coupe
Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC (Would be my choice)
Nissan 200SX
Ford Cougar 2.5 (She's keen on this one)
Audi Coupe 2.5

Well if shes a badge snob like you said she would probably be happyest with the Audi Coupe 2.5
Dont you have an Audi Riliot? If you do and uve have a good experriances with it why not dirrect her in the same dirrection :)
